Water Level Detector

A few years back I had an AETEC water level/leak detector I used in my hot tub to monitor water level. When the probe was submersed (aka wet detected) all was good. When the probe was out of the water (dry detected), my hot tub needed more water. This device is long gone and I am looking to replace it for the same similar purpose. I can find all kinds of WiFi sensors but I need either zigbee or zwave. Any suggestions would be welcome.

do you mean Aeotec by chance? they do have this Aeotec Water Sensor 7 | Z-Wave Plus Gen7 Leak & Flood Detector and this Aeotec Water Sensor 7 Pro | Leak, Level & HVAC Monitor

That look similar to what I had unfortunately not readily available in Canada. I can only find it on Amazon from a market place seller with a high price tag and shipping cost.

Couldn't you make this from pretty much any Zigbee/Zwave leak detector?

If there isn't a probe (which is just two contacts that conduct when wet) I think you should be able to solder a length of wire to each contact and put that in the tub. When water covers the ends of the wire, it's wet. When not, you need water.

Most of my leak detectors are of the Utiltech variety with a long wire lead with two metal probes on the end. Extremely sensitive. Wife and grandkids set them off regularly.

Excuse me! Your grandkids set them off. Your wife is just testing them (and the system).

 Great minds think alike. Sort of…..

I had a Zigbee soil moisture sensors I havent been using. When the probe is submerged the sensor reads 99%. When its removed from water it drops almost instantly. While your solution isnt anywhere near as “clunky” as mine, the soil sensor actually works quite well and gives me very quick results. Why is speed essential? I am using this setup in a basement toilet tank that, despite multiple repairs and part replacement, from time to time fails to fill and water continues running. I now know within a minute that there is a problem with the flapper not sealing the tank.

This will work fine

I have bought a bunch of these from Ali Express. They work great for me.

I use two of them to keep an outdoor fountain and a swamp cooler filled, by combining them with a smart irrigation valve.

Once an hour the automation checks if it is dry, and then it turns on the water valve and fills until it reads wet again if it reads dry.

You can check also these :

Interestingly, the Zigbee models are currently not available on Amazon or AliExpress, but there are other websites that likely have these Zigbee models in stock.

They are even cheaper today. $1.41CAN with free shipping  They only let you order 1 though

So I got a Tuya ZigBee 3.0 Leakage Alarm Detector Water Leak Sensor installed on my Hubitat C8 Pro but I can not get any response from it with the probe in/out of the water. I have excluded it and included it multiple times as well as trying several generic drivers as well as the Tuya Zigbee Tank Level Monitor. No response from the device under any circumstances. Maybe a$1.41 price tag wasnt that good a deal

The cheap ZigBee devices can be a PITA.

Start with trying DLV.

And this THREAD is helpful to find what exact device you're dealing with.

Good luck!

See also Modified DLV, particularly good for Tuya devices:

Well I give up. I tried so many different options even beyond those suggested here. I even included it onto another C8 (not pro) aqnd the results were the same. No problem adding it , it just doesnt respond to anything. Sigh, that $1.41 I’ll never see again.

I assume you have one of these, using AAA batteries:

I would try the Modified DLV method ( see Water Level Detector - #13 by John_Land), making certain to do the “remove batteries” step. I’d also try from scratch, deleting the prior versions, pairing once using Modified DLV, then pairing again (Modified DLV can be used here) without removing the initially paired device. Also, does the LED of the device blink at all when you put it into pairing mode?

What? That's not allowed. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

If you change your mind have a look at this thread:

Search the thread for the Manufacturer/model from your Devices Data section for any matches or possible solutions.

Not likely, but it might be as simple as installing the Dev Branch Driver.

When changing drivers, always re-pair your battery-powered Zigbee sensor with your C8 hub (without deleting the device).
