New to Hubitat, just ordered C8 Pro - Finally migrating from X-10 (lol)

My alarm panel had a built in Z-Wave controller but it had too many issues, so I decided to try Z-Box hub by Zooz for the 9 switches / devices I have on Z-wave.

The Z-box had a few issues and I decided to give the C8 pro a try, hope it's not to hard to get going...

I also have 20+ lights and appliances on the oldest home control system called X-10 -

LoL my X-10 is even been put on Internet based control.

It will be nice to replace all those old X-10 based devices with Z-wave or Zigbee.

I too came from a x-10 home always worked well .. but decided to update it.
Hubitat def has a learning curve, but you can lots of help here.
I would try and keep everything Zigbee if you can .. z-wave is ok .. but has MANY down sides.
to many to list .. Zigbee is easy setup and super easy to configure and replace devices if need be. I am sure you will have lots of ??'s Ask them and someone will help

Read this post. It will help avoid some gotchas. Pay attention to the ghosts section too...

Welcome. You are among some kindred X-10 spirits here. Bonus points if you used HomeBase and then graduated to JDS Stargate.

What killed X-10 was the old Compact Fluorescent bulbs. They injected so much noise on the power line that X-10 reliability went way down.

X-10 is working with the usual tricks, plenty of line filters on devices like switching power supplies.

It's the limitations and lack feedback from X-10 devices that has finally moved me down the road to Hubitat.

@rlithgow1
I did read that earlier today when I joined, is shutting down the Hubitat by power disconnect that bad as stated?

Even if it is not I have some Z-Wave devices on a D.C. power and will likely put the C8 pro on the battery backed D.C. power source also.

I'll believe you if you say you went into your breaker box at some point and connected a 0.1µF capacitor between the two phases.

Yes, you shouldn't just pull power - that can (and eventually will) result in database corruption. Always shutdown via the UI, wait for confirmation, check for red light on hub, then pull power.

More details about the power source you'd like to use would be needed... The C8/8P's z-wave radio is (unfortunately) particularly sensitive to power fluctautions, so folks here may be able to weigh in on whether or not your intended power device is a good idea or not.

And welcome!!

For every person who says this, you can find someone else who will say exactly the opposite about why they don’t like zigbee and chose to use z-wave devices.

Why Z-Wave is not great ..

#1 z-wave you can / will get ghosts! ( never with ZigBee )
#2 ZigBee Super easy replacement of bad or replacement devices.
#3 ZigBee in a lot of cases they have a better mesh
#4 z-wave sucks LOL < just my thoughts

I run both, the only 100% reliable one has been Clear Connect. That said I've probably had pretty equal problems with both zigbee and z-wave.

Make sure you put your Hubitat hub on an uninterruptible power supply.

The power source I plan to use will be a 12 volt 100 Ah battery that supplies power to communication devices and Alarm panel.

The 12 volt power will be regulated to 5 volts USB-C with a buck-regulator like in image below.

These type of regulators hold the voltage well usually, guess it's an experiment with C8 and Z-wave?

Yes. Note that the C-8 seems to be very particular about its 5v power. There are several threads in the forum about extensive testing that this been done with POE. So, if you experience weirdness, one troubleshooting step should be to supply power using the provided supply that comes with the C-8. It's not the "holding voltage well" that is the problem; instead, it's noise on the 5v supply.

I use something similar to power my C-8 Pro and it’s worked well. Mine converts a 9v barrel plug to 5v USB-C.

Very useful info related to the C8 sensitivity to power supplies...

C7: Zigbee perfect, Z-Wave problems
C8: Zigbee problems, Z-Wave perfect

I only have a couple of (old) zwave devices. Plenty of zigbee.

Zigbee is less expensive, from what I recall.

Personally, I have no issues at all with zigbee, perhaps due to its stronger mesh (many devices). I hate zwave, too many annoying setup issues for me back in the day. Urgh.

Welcome ! =)

Also cell phone chargers and switch mode power supplies with there line input filters...
REALLY clamped the X10 carrier to nothing and brought the system crashing down.
My Father and I had extensive X10 in our homes.... with LOTS of plug in filters...
even then the system could get flakey and not respond.
Tons of signal troubleshooting with signal analyzers.

All of our X10 stuff was donated to the recycler... really was hard to do!

Hubitat is SO MUCH BETTER though!
