Water Valve Recommendations appreciated

To me it looks like it's soldered but I'm not a plumber!

It is a 1 in. soldered ball valve, manufactured by Watts which is a good brand.

I thought you had mentioned you had a watercop?

I do. :slightly_smiling_face: It's mounted next to the water softener. A bit odd, but we actually have two shutoff valves. Original is in the pics above, the other is the WaterCop next to water softener, pics below. It's downstream from the original shutoff valve.

Wife wanted WaterCop in an accessible location, hard to get to the original shutoff valve, so we ended up really only using the WaterCop.

The Bulldog's control unit is connected via a wire from the motor, so I can mount the controller where she will be able to see and reach it, so I'm putting the bulldog on the original shutoff valve. :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks for confirming! Should be an easy install (in theory).

Maybe see if you can repair it, since it's on it's way out anyhow.

Pull it off the valve to have a play.
Not many screws to get to the gearbox.
Change the grease and see what happens. :person_shrugging:

Interesting... Where would the grease go, exactly?

Well...
I've never played with that exact device, but if the joint on the bottom of the case is an easily removed plate, then the exposed cavity will likely be the gears and the grease in question.

But then I'm probably more willing to have you destroy your stuff than you are.

LOL... I've destroyed enough stuff "fixing" them over the years.

In addition to a reliable controller, I want battery backup and direct wired sensor, and since I wouldn't know enough about it to tell if my attempted fix was a solid fix, I think it's time to retire the cop, give him a donut and gold watch and move on to the young dog.

From this rough in listing it looks like you should be able to remove the actuator, install a handle and use the water cop valve with your new water sentry of choice at that same location.

Oh, that is good to know. I might take that opportunity and put it there since it is easier than to see/access both the main actuator and the controller.

Big news, I ordered the Z-Wave bulldog with the battery pack and the wired sensor.

Still don't have a delivery date but new toys are on the way sometime soon.

Now I need to go read up on removing the water cop actuator and adding a handle. Even if I don't put the bulldog there, I would gain an easy to access location where I could do a manual shut off if I needed to.

I think we've got a two-fer here! Thanks for the great input.

You could also replace the actuator with the standard one and add the remote button controller that watercop has. You can also add the wired sensor.

Send WaterCop an email explaining that you're doing house renovations and would like a rough in handle since your newly purchased kit doesn't have one.

Interesting. No Z-wave on the standard WaterCop actuator, unless I misunderstood their current product assortment.

Or are you suggesting that as a secondary backup option? I do want to integrate with Hubitat.

That's pretty cool/creative, hadn't seen that before, thanks for the link. It would unfortunately violate the wife's "keep it simple for when you die" doctrine. She seems very keen about me dying.

Using Hubitat is also not going to meet the simple requirement.

Just watercop pro is simple. Adding the additional zwave relays to support Hubitat visibility and control is useful. Watercop continues to work without Hubitat and zwave.

You are probably right...

The water heater will be covered by the direct-connect sensor, so that's always monitored regardless of HE. My wife has been around HE for years, and will (surprised me!) actually change leak sensor batteries when she gets a notification, so her backup keeps me honest there. The approach has worked w/out issue for us since we set it up, including Flow doing leak sensing/reporting. So determined overall good enough/safe enough for us.

I’ve been very happy with my Sinopé valve!

Did something similar - placed it in series with my other valve. Made it easy to install since I could cut the city water while installing.

I wonder if the WaterCop could just be replaced with the Sinopé?

i use this in one of my houses.. costs more and more to install.

but i prefer vs the turn the arm model..
