New Switch works from dash but not from automations

I had a switch just fail and replaced it with a brand new GE Enbrigten Zwave Switch 58436

I paired the switch and it lights up blue, if I go to the device in the control page I can toggle the switch on and off and see the light turn on and off. However when I put the switch in a Scene with Groups and Scenes then it will turn on but not turn off.

I have a simple automation that turns the switch on, but also it never turns off. The old switch worked in both cases. I've tried deleting the group and re-creating it with the new switch as well as rebooting the hub a few times, and everything else I can think of.

The other interesting thing is the switch doesn't seem to be reporting it's state as on or off, it always say off even when it's on, my other switches like this seem to report their state properly. Wondering if I possibly got a bad switch.

Shut down the hub and power cycle the switch and hub. (disconnect power for 30 seconds and re-power).
Turn on debug logging for the device and any apps in play.

Reproduce the issue and post a screenshot of the logs.

Will do over the weekend

So one thing I remembered was that I had a Z-Wave State poller running on that light because the old switch didn't report it's status. I disabled that app, rebooted the switch and the hub, and now the group is properly turning it on and off, and the switch reports status, we'll see if the timer works, if not I'll post up more logs.

So more data, the switch worked for one evening (Saturday) then sunday night didn't shut itself off, and was not responding to the group command again. It does respond to manual commands just at the switch but is not reporting it's status back. In the logs here I got home after 10pm (light should've gone off at 9:30pm) and tried the group switch first with no result, then pressed on the device itself. There are no logs for group switch or timer. Also somehow the debug logs were turned off, I've turned them back on. I did then trip the group switch again and no logs appear for the device at all.

Here are the logs:

Debug logs only stay on for 30 minutes usually. If you go to the Logs > Scheduled Jobs tab you can find the job on that device that turns the logging off and remove it so the logging stays on.

What does it look like nothing obvious is there for me, the jobs that have trashcans next to them all look like other things. There's a few "Foo cleanup" jobs but no trashcans to remove them. How would I put it back?

I turned on logging and tried a couple toggles of the group switch, the light turns on (I can verify by looking at it) but nothing in the logs show it turning on. It does not turn back off with the group switch only the device itself's button. And the device's state doesn't reflect that it's on, even when turned on from it's own button.

I'll add that I just made sure the hub was up to date, and rebooted it again, (from the UX) and the issue persists that the switch is not communicating status back to the hub although I can toggle it only through the switch UX itself.

Still can't figure out how to shut down the logging, but I did do something else that perhaps helps understand the issue. I was messing with logging, and I had found the complication on the devices page that lets me put a state value up there, I noticed when I turned on the group switch it says "SomeOn" and not "AllOn" so I concluded that perhaps the entire issue is that the switch is not properly communicating back to the hub that it's on, therefore when used in the automations and the group it thinks the switch is off and doesn't send it an off (as the switches status keeps reporting Off no matter what) Is it possible that optimisation is in the code?

Those two statements are in conflict with each other.

Either this is an old Z-wave (non-plus) switch that needs to be polled, OR this is a new Z-wave plus switch that should not be polled. A Z-wave plus device with the proper driver won't allow polling.

Please post a screenshot (not a copy/paste) of the bottom section of this device's settings page. In particular, the inClusters are what we need.

Also please list the exact name of the driver (Type) that this device is currently using. Probably something like Generic Z-wave Switch or similar.

Yes, some apps do that by default.

If power cycling the switch did not work, you may want to just exclude the device at this point and then include it again. You can swap apps to a virtual device as a placeholder so the exclude doesn’t remove it from everything.

If you want to avoid that for some reason there might be some other tricks.

You could find and try my universal switch / dimmer driver on it. Run configure and there is a chance that might fix it.

Sorry for the lack of clarity. I replaced an older switch that required polling, and I just used the "Replace" option when I put the new switch in. The switch came in as a Generic ZWave Switch, then I thought maybe that was why it wasn't working so I changed it to the GE Switch specifically (I had specified it as the GE Switch when I added it, by the part number). I have since disabled and then removed the poller as I should no longer need it, when I did that and rebooted the switch and then it worked for around a day, at that time it worked with the scene, it reported it's status, and it worked that evening on the timer. The next day it went on with the timer, but never turned off, and when I went to the system I found it wouldn't turn off on the group switch either, but I could turn it off from the device page, however it's state is always listed as "off" even when on

Oh there are tons of different ge / jasco drivers to the point where it’s hard to know which one to even use anymore. You might just have it set to one for an older device so it’s not picking up the events. I would just try my universal driver pack, it works on all the newer 700 or 800 series GE and Jasco switches and dimmers.

And the inClusters? Could you give us those?

Like @jtp10181 says above, the names are kinda confusing, there are so many similar ones. You should likely try and use a different driver. Knowing if this is really a Z-wave plus switch (I think it is) might narrow down what to try.

His drivers are pretty solid, but I don't think they work on the older devices. There are other community drivers for older Enbrighten switches that also work good and are less confusing than some of the built in drivers.

Missed that sorry, @jtp10181 which drivers are yours? Do I just switch them in that drop down to change them or do I have to unbind the switch and re-add it? When I change the type to "Generic ZWave Plus Switch" it still doesn't report status.

That is definitely Z-wave plus, the 0x5e gives it away.

Did you hit "Configure" after changing drivers?

My drivers are not built in so you have to install them. [DRIVER] Universal Z-Wave Drivers (Switch/Dimmer)

Once installed you just switch the device to it and run configure.

Other than that, if someone can verify the correct system driver to use, running a configure form there might also fix it.

Last resort, exclude and include again.

Sorry responding on my phone so my abilities are limited right now.

I didn't hit configure, I just hit save, I have now tried both the GE Embrighten one and the Generic ZWave Plus switch drive and hit save, then hit configure, in neither case does the switch start to report back it's status.

then I downloaded the universal drivers and installed them, switched it to that driver did "Save" and then pressed the "Configure" button and again no status updates, despite the light turning on and off, the page looks like this:

I can't say for sure how that universal driver is supposed to act. Typically though, you would configure, and I can't remember if you have to hit save, (won't hurt to try) but it should at some point pop up some new items on that screen just below your screenshot. Rereading the driver documentation, it should show the progress in the upper right corner in States. It should prompt you to refresh and save at some point.

It should in that middle section list the settings the switch has like if it has an LED there would be the settings for it, or if this were a dimmer, how long it takes to dim. From there, you could set/configure those settings, and save again.

To me, it almost acts like the switch didn't pair properly upon replace? Or like something is messed up and the switch thinks it is something that it is not?

Some 30 minutes later it's still says "syncStatus: 1 Pending Changes" the switch physically looks correct as a 58436 Enbrighten switch, including the "air gap" switch under it you can only reach when the cover is off.

I'll try excluding it removing it and re-including it. and see if it changes the behaviours, my worry is it'll work for some amount of time then quit again.
