New GE/Jasco Switches

I have 35 Jasco z-wave products on my ADT Pulse system. At least 10 of these are brand new in a single room within 30 feet of the gateway/hub that keep dropping off of the network. I had to have a tech come out $$ and we put everything on the new gateway/hub but they all dropped off again. Of course ADT wants me to update my entire system since they say the Pulse subcontractor is not managing/updating the system anymore. But the tech would not say if the existing z-wave issues would go away. So, I am thinking this is the time to add a good z-wave hub. Looking at the Hubitat list of compatible Jasco devices, the only gap I see is the Jasco Smart White Toggle Dimmer-almond 76595, Jasco Smart White Paddle Switch 76591. These look to be newer models with z-wave + and LR. I would like to move forward but would like to know if anyone has ‘included’ 76591 & 76595. Question #2 is whether anyone has had problems with Jasco Smart Receptacle 58449. That is where most of my current issues are. I don’t know if it is a Jasco issue or Pulse not being updated. (I am working with Jasco on it simultaneously). Any feedback would be helpful in my decision to get the C-8 Pro. I am ready to buy.

I’m not sure which specific model numbers, but I have two Jasco / Enbrighten /UltraPro dimmers connected to my system. They are both Z-wave 500. They have remained connected with no drop off whatsovever since installed years ago.

I’ve had a few issues with dimming LED very low but I believe those are firmware related. There is a thread on here somewhere about how to get the updated firmware for the Jasco/Enbrighten products. The updated firmware helped ALOT.

Here is a thread about someone using the 76591: GE Enbrighten Switch Instructions for Z-Wave Association to another device

Thanks calinatl. My z-wave experience has been limited adding/removing devices & using the canned automations due to the very limited options in the ADT pulse system. While low on experience I can dive into firmware updates & programming. I did a little searching and found places to get started on firmware updates should I need them. I will wait a little while to see if there is any other experience with those switches on Hubitat.

I can’t speak to their latest switches, but I have used some of their older ones and they were quite reliable. I did update to newer switches from Inovelli and Zooz since then as those have more features.

I think other users like @JasonJoel might have experience with their newer (if not newest) ones.

I have never had a z-wave device fall off the network. I have mostly 500 series GE, and a couple 700 series Ultrapro toggle dimmers (along with a bunch of 700 series and one 800 LR Zooz). Migrated from C-5 to C-8 to C-8 Pro without having to intervene in any way.

Same here.

I have a mix of UltraPro and GE Enbrighten dimmers and switches. I migrated from C-7 to C-8 to C-8 Pro without any issue.

The GE/Jasco switches have been my bread and butter since i started in smart home stuff years ago. Every room in my house has at least one if not more anymore and most of them are 5+ years old at this point. They’ve slowly failed over time but they’ve been the most rock solid z wave equipment i’ve ever bought. The hardware itself failed, but they stayed consistent and functional their entire life. I’ve also migrated them a few different times to different hubs without any huge issues.

Anyways, if you’ve got the switches and you know the hub is the issue, you’d be giving yourself a major upgrade going to the C8 Pro.

I am not familiar with ADT Pulse, but it sounds like you may have a zwave mesh issue. I assume the tech that came out made sure you don’t have any ghost node(s) (again assuming pulse has a way to view all the zwave devices and all of their routes, etc.)

Not saying you shouldn’t move to HE. As you can see, you will get a lot of help from the community without having to call out techs. If you do decide to move them to HE you may want to take a look at this thread.

And if you want to continue to use ADT for security and want to try to integrate it with HE do a search on ADT. There are a few discussions about integration and how people of done it.

00kirby: my hardware has been reliable as well. I have had to replace 1 switch in 5 yrs under their 5-yr warranty. Other than that, all good. Some of the new 58449 receptacles had a unique issue where the button between the outlets would not energize or deenergize the lower outlet. The only solution was to power off the receptacle. Jasco replaced 4 switches but none of them stay connected. I do wonder if something with the old gateway scrambled the firmware… just grasping. The major feature I would lose is the ability to automate my devices to the large installed base of ADT sensors on every door/window. While that is the major loss, I only use a couple of those sensors now. Thank you for the positive feedback on moving forward w/C8 Pro

CaptWoody- I will review the thread. It is clear to me that there is a lot of community support from my single post. ADT now relies on phone support with varying levels of actual technical background (I actually knew more about z-wave than the last tech with whom I spoke and that is not saying much). They then go to on-site support with a fixed fee if you have the service contract. Thanks for the thread

I too had (have) an Honeywell (ADT) L7000 panel that had a Z-wave card installed.

I don't think the engineering team at Honeywell/ADT/TotalConnect have the :poop: together. I fought issues with the Z-wave losing connection almost on a monthly basis. It even caused the alarm system itself to do a random reset and restart. Once I pulled the Z-wave card it no longer crashed and reset like it did.

I tried a ZooZ Z-box hub but it didn't support my GE z-wave 220v 30A relay so I returned it to ZooZ

Then I tried a Hubitat C8 Pro all my legacy GE z-wave devices work well and I have added many more Z-wave and Zigbee devices, all which work fine.

Glad I dumped the TotalDisconnect ADT Honeywell Z-wave fiasco

@Sebastien With my ADT system, I am using Google Home for additional automation. My Google doorbells turn on lites, etc. The Google Home is automatically linked to ADT Pulse since Google is a part owner of ADT. Will I be able to create similar automations in HE between my doorbells & my z-wave devices? For example, person detection activates z wave switches connected to outside lights?

That’s a good question. I did a quick search on the forum (and I’m a terrible searcher…) and found this:

Looks like integration to the google doorbell has some limitation. However, if a google automation can be triggered from the doorbell, it should be able to turn on/off a virtual motion switch which the Hubitat hub can use to trigger an automation.

The key here is to be able to let the Hubitat Hub know of the ring or motion. Once it knows, the possibilities are endless.

I personally do this with the Ring echo system and it works quite well. My outside lights will turn on with motion or ring events.

@Sebastien Thanks for the link. I started reviewing it and quickly realized I was in over my head and drifted out after reviewing the first 25 or so of the 1300 posts. I am sure there is a lot of good info there but for now it is too much for me. Since my google doorbells work well with my ADT Gateway/hub with my older Jasco devices, I think my plan will be to get the C-8 Pro and put the newer devices on the HE. I realize that I cannot have a z-wave device controlled by two hubs so the hub assignment and dis-enrollment will be a decision point for each device. Having a more robust Hub (HE) will make a lot more devices available to me as I continue to automate. (My wife is afraid the house will stop if I pass…. ) The HE will also allow me to learn more. I have had fun with the Google YAML script editor and am ready to learn some more systems. Thank you to all for the comments. Question for you: Should I keep this post open as a convert/add the HE to document my experience or maybe start a new one. Looking for advice as a soon to be new user vs. just a new poster….

Exactly why I am now safe from her killing me in my sleep

I got an ADT Pulse system in 2011.

It was leading edge then.

By a year or so, it was in the middle of the pack. After that, it fell off the back end. They never added any support for new devices, etc.

They were using a 3rd party for everything and the support was effectively worthless. The system suddenly decided it wouldn’t let me pair anything–and their solution was to do something like start all over.

So, I did just that. I bought my first Hubitat and started over.

I haven’t looked back.

I used the Community Ring App on Hubitat and got the Ring package with monitoring.

Told ADT that I took their advice and started over–so they could cancel everything.

(I don’t think they meant for me to really start over on a new platform lol)

Good call on your part. I just got my HE a couple of days ago. I have added some Kasa smart receptacles-pretty easy. I just added converted 1 z-wave paddle switch from ADT to HE- very easy compared to ADT. The struggle I have is that I have my new Google doorbells turning on my ADT controlled z-wave lights when people are detected at night. From the Google Home Assistant in Integration, I cannot send signals from the Home to HE. I can go from HE to Home. Google Home integrates automatically with ADT Pulse (despite its shortcomings). For now it appears I can just leave some of the devices on ADT z-wave and add new devices to HE. If I need to integrate with the doorbells, I will have to have Home to the automation for those particular functions. If anyone has a better idea, I am open. Again, I am glad I took the step to HE like you since I can now add more devices to my house where I was limited to only ADT approved z-wave prior. Thanks for sharing.

I am not much of a Google Home user, however surely Google Home can control a Hubitat device that has been shared via Hubitat’s built-in Google Home integration. One workaround commonly used is to create a Virtual Switch device on Hubitat, then share that with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, or Apple Home. Then, create an automation on the cloud platform (I.e. Google Home) that turns on the Hubitat Virtual Switch when the doorbell button is pressed (or when it detects a person, etc…). On the Hubitat side, use the Virtual Switch device as a trigger to run an automation that does anything you’d like.

Obviously, if desired, you should be able to use a real (non-virtual) Hubitat device as well.

I have done similar things in both Amazon Alexa and Apple Home. Surely Google Home can do something similar, right? Maybe it is still very limited as a platform?

I created a virtual switch on Hubitat (e.g., XYZ)

I share that with Google Home.

I can “hey Google, turn on/off XYZ".

Works like a charm.

You can create automations in Google home to turn that "switch” on and off.

Thanks for the idea. I will research it more. I think I read it backwards to begin with. The Hubitat Google home integration helper says: “This integration allows Google Home to control switches, dimmers, thermostats, and bulbs that have been joined to your Hubitat Elevation hub, but the reverse is not possible. Devices that have been added directly to Google Home or Google Assistant cannot be shared with your Hubitat Elevation hub.” This tells me upon closer (better) reading that I can have the devices in my Hubitat and the Google Doorbell can control it thru Home to Hubitat. That was my goal. Thanks for making me revisit. I will have to unlink ADT from my Google Home and then try to set up the devices from there.
