Need something like the Third Reality Night Light, but smaller/sleaker (WAF issue)

Maybe you can find a recessed outlet that has a single USB that might fit these:

Interesting, hadn't seen or heard of that version.

Not sure what it is, exactly, as it looks like it's an Echo Flex accessory, plugs into the bottom of it? I'm not familiar w/the Echo Flex, never really did much w/Amazon devices.

Pretty sure it's just a usb version of the plug version.

I'm not sure either, at first glance it looks to be solely a light that plugs into the USB port of the flex -- it would work similarly to the USB lights that @lairdknox brought up earlier I think..I don't think it has any interface other that the USB (e.g. no Zigbee, Matter, or Zwave) -- my guess is the flex controls it through USB.

Probably quite literally the same module that's attached to the chonky thing -- just removable.

Love the Inovelli light bars -- I have a similar configuration to you -- I use Red for "Oh β– β– β– β– " a door is unlocked, Green for "all good", and strobing fuschia for "It's 2 AM in the morning, raining cats and dogs, and the damned septic alarm is going off again!"

Maybe?

This matter one looked like it could be flattened, but the way the processor is mounted at a 90 makes it tough. Maybe open a zigbee one to see if you can re-case it.

Could she be persuaded to find the Third Reality Night Light acceptable, if you showed her the alternative?

Oh wow, I had totally forgotten about that! I like your thinking!! Scare her so much that suddenly Mr. Chunky looks like Mr. Sexypants. On it!

Shelly plug will arrive Wednesday, so I'll see how that works and do a WAF check.

My solution was to place a color bulb (Hue in our case) into a small uplight fixture hidden under the bed, behind the TV, over a kitchen cabinet, etc.

Flashing white equals important caller. Momentary blue for my "decrement thermostat" rules. Red for increment. Dim orange for night light, etc.

We see that wash of light, but not the fixture itself, which keeps WAF maximized.

We use one of these:

With 3 of these (red, green, blue).

Each LED (red, blue, green) has 3 states: off, flashing, on.

It sits across the room on the dresser. I had to decrease the brightness using 80% blackout tape.

My LED USB lights arrive today from Amazon, but my "Zigbee three USB" switch won't be getting here until the12th or so, unfortunately (Aliexpress). I think I'm going to prefer the USB LEDs on the Zigbee plug (more fun/geeky), but wife will probably like the more "glowy" Shelly plug (assuming I get it to work).

Nice to know, was wondering if these would be bright enough, sounds like brightness is not an issue.

My indicators in garage:
GREEN - all exterior doors closed
RED - At least one is unlocked

In garage so WAF does not apply

+1 for Inovelli switch light bars. Two switches in a box in the kitchen, visible when heading to the bedroom. One switch indicates for the garage doors and the other for locks. Bars are set for red or green. One also shows blue if the garage temp shows below 35 deg f.

But, but, Inovelli switches are so $$$$$$$$$

True. And one is limited in placement. My triple-LED setup cost me $12 all-in. And works well enough without being too obtrusive.

And so versatile. Light bar indicator, versatile button controller. I only use four of them. Four years of service so far. Most of the other smart switches are somewhat generic z-wave GE Embrighten switches or dimmers . Simple. inexpensive and reliable for me so far.

I do not disagree! If someone would give me one to play with I could do an excellent review.

I currently use two nearly extinct Homeseer WD200+ dimmer’s LEDs to display status.

Start a renovation project, recess the receptacle so that your lights are flush with the wall.

OK, so I'll share our colors and associated logic, since no one asked.

Wife does not like red (looks too ominous) for warnings so we use purple instead. We like blue instead of green for all good as blue is a more calming/cool color. And we wanted an in-between warning so we use traditional yellow for that. So Blue, Purple, and Yellow on the Third Reality night lights (hope to be able to get similar on the USB LEDs/Shelly).

  • Blue: All monitored closed and/or locked
  • Purple: One or more open and/or unlocked
  • Yellow: Special case - basically says "Everything except door(s) right next to a night light are closed." Managed specific to each night light. Helps when exiting the house. The living room night light is right next to front door, utility room night light is right next to doors to outside, garage, and garage door itself. We typically will have those doors open/unlocked when leaving and don't want a purple "general" warning on the living room night light if the front door is unlocked/open and we're leaving. So if we're leaving yellow tells us that only doors right next to the night light that we expect to be open are open. If we're not on the way out yellow gives us specific info that one or more exits next to the night light are open, making it easier to quickly resolve.

Sounds more complicated than it is, and an automation that my wife quite likes. FWIW, I was showing this setup to my neighbor and he got totally confused, but it works for us, so :man_shrugging:

I didn't need as these kinds of reminders very much until somewhat recently as I passed through 65 on my way seemingly to increasing levels of general confusion. LED my life from now on, I guess.
