LIFX - Name in hubitat is sometimes wrong

Hey everyone,

I have added a new Router to my system and I had to re-add all my devices to Hubitat. (due to having to issue static IPs from scratch)

The first time I imported them I had absolutely no issues. But now, I get devices with the same name

For example, in my Living Room I have the following devices

0 LR 1
0 LR 2
0 LR 3

My import shows something like the following

0 LR 1
0 LR 3
0 LR 3

So essentially it creates multiple devices with the same name - but they are not the same name. I could possibly go back and figure them out one by one (IP and Mac Address) but that would take a ton of time as i have ~70 active LIFX lights

Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this and how can I solve it?

I've certainly never seen that here, but I only have 22 LIFX lights. I assume the DNIs (device network ids) for the duplicates are different? The DNI is the IP address of the device. I really can't see a mechanism for this occurring, but I'll take another look at the discovery code when I get a chance.

Yes DNIs are different. Let me share some screenshots to make the challenge as clear as possible.

Here is an example of what I see after importing (did a clean re-import today after restarting Modem, Router and all Access Points)

In this pic, we see 2 Lamps with the name LIFX 0 KR 1. (IPs 187 & 188)

From the Router Clients page, I can find these 2 clients which are indeed separate

In fact, one of them is a Downlight (Correct - 0 KR contains only Downlights) and one is normal lamp - which I guess is the wrong one

This happens approximately 10 times in 75 Devices.

Finally, these are the settings I use for Device Discovery

What does the the log say? I'm looking for the "Added device" lines here

Hey Rob,

By log I think you mean what shows in the discover page. Here is an example of what it shows.

There are multiple devices with the same name here, but in the LIFX App they have different names (confirmed, checked again)

The next step I was thinking of taking would be to remove the LIFX Master app, and then re-install it.

I can try that, or if it helps you in any way I can wait and share logs to help catch the issue

Can you try a new discovery and post the logs from that - probably best to reinstall the app as you suggest.

That looks like it might be an older version. If you're running on 2.2.7 or earlier of the Hubitat software then it should be version 1.0.5, I released 1.0.6 the other day (Sunday I think) which works with 2.2.8

It may just be an error in the logging, the the MAC address shouldn't be showing as null.

Did you use HPM to install the LIFX app or was it a manual installation?

Oh! As it usually is - the issue is obvious and was in front of me the whole team. Updated now (HPM) and re-adding - will update once I have results

So updating did not solve the issue after all - here is the log of the 2nd time I ran it after updating (first also did not recognize Mac Address)

I am now thinking it might be a security setting of my Router as I tried to increase security (created dedicated VLAN for LIFX).

Will review and update if that is it

Removed all the privacy/isolation features from VLAN and I still get the same issue. Will try removing the app and re-installing it

I just realized that My hubitat is on a different VLAN than the lights. Could that be it?

Regardless, not having the MAC address will definitely cause problems with discovery.

Here's a possible fix, completely untested since I can't reproduce the issue here:

In the LIFX Master app code, there's the following line (line 888 in the latest version)

final String mac = deviceParams.mac

Try changing that to

final String mac = deviceParams.mac ?: getMACFromIP(ip)

Perhaps at that point the MAC address will be known.

If not I'll have to find another way to store the temporary device definitions - currently it's an array indexed by the MAC address, which probably explains the behaviour you're seeing with duplicate names. LIFX Master asks the device for various bits of information and builds up the device definition, once the definition is complete it creates the child device and removes that definition. If it finds another device while the definition is incomplete, then it will overwrite the values - e.g. the label with the later details. This will probably mostly happen when the IP addresses of two devices are quite close together, as with your 192.168.2.187 and 192.168.2.188

Let me know if the change above actually does fetch the MAC address - if not I'll probably have to use the IP address instead.

Hey rob,

I moved Hubitat to the same WLAN as my lights and everything worked correctly

Tried with the new Code, but it still returned duplicates
Tried Forwarding Port 56700 as suggested here
I have a Unifi Dream Machine Pro as my central Router

I really appreciate the time you invested here - and I am happy to help in any way (now or in the future) if you need help catching this issue

Odd that you're still getting duplicates though, I'll see about adding some extra logging.

I assume that you're seeing the MAC addresses now?

I have the UDM (non-pro) which should work in much the same way.

I'm planning on a bit of a rewrite to take advantage of the new Libraries feature in 2.2.8, but I'll wait until HPM supports it.
