[INCIDENT] ZOOZ Double Plug (MODEL ZEN25)

That would explain reports for the power attribute (Watts), but it wouldn't explain the switch on/off reports. It's odd that it repeatedly sends "off" events when there wasn't a change. I would suggest verifying that you're on the most recent firmware (you'll need either the "community" firmware updater driver on the C-5, or some third-party solution like Z-Wave PC Controller, to do this in your case--if you need to update). I'm not sure what changes they made since release, but at least one is reported to help on the C-7, and I wouldn't be surprised if excessive reporting was one of those things. If that doesn't help, I'd suggest reaching out to Zooz support, perhaps providing what you see with debug (and descriptionText) logging enabled, to let them know you're seeing multiple apparently-unsolicited reports without any real-world change in device state.

The suggestion above to turn off descriptionText logging, while fine in its own right, will only hide this particular problem, not fix the source--assuming the source is undesired incoming Z-Wave commands, which debug logging will reveal (things like a Basic Report, Switch Binary Report, etc.).

I'm on the 2.0 firmware, that I was able to verify.

I also have a C5 and three Zen25s. As previously mentioned in this thread, one thing that you can do to stop the power reporting whenever you turn off the Zen25 is to change parameter 18 in the advanced settings to a setting of 1. No matter the settings you make to the reporting periods, it always seems to dump a report of everything when the unit is turned off if parameter 18 is left at the default.

The first thing you need to do is make all of the settings/parameter adjustments that you want in the normal driver.

Then switch to the Basic Z-Wave tool driver (install it if you haven’t already)

Under the Set parameter button, enter 18 for parameter number, 1 for size and 1 for value.

Then press the Set parameter button. You should see the following in the logs.

Then switch back to the ZEN25 driver and hit save device. Don’t hit save preferences.

ConfigVal18 will still show as β€œ0” with Zooz Double Plug driver but it will be set to β€œ1” and there will be no reports ever again.

First I want to say that I made tests with @agnes.zooz. They did some tests on theirs sides and I did mine.

I have a C7. I removed my 5 ZEN25 devices few months ago because there was too much Zwave traffic on my network. I have between 75 ZWave devices.

Without any ZEN25 devices, I ran Hub Watchdog to monitor my ZWave network by activating a ZWave device every 5 minutes. I had some slowdowns a couple times per day. I already opened a ticket with Hubitat. They said they know the problem and they have a Firmware update in testing with NO ETA for now.

After discussion with @agnes.zooz. I re-included my 5 ZEN25 without security and ran Hub Watchdog for 3 days and it's working fine since that time. I have the same slowdown (couple times per day), same as before the inclusion of my ZEN25.

What I did:

  • I included my 5 ZEN25 devices with the phone APP.
  • When asked for security I clicked SKIP (the app was changed since my last inclusion) to be sure there is NO SECURITY applied to the device.
  • Removed Enable debug logging and Enable descriptionText logging
  • I used Basic Z-Wave tools (Type) to init parameter 18 to 1 (length 1).
  • I put back Zooz double plug (Type), clicked save device and I never clicked save preferences.
  • I scheduled all 5 ZEN25 devices to open and close 2 times per day.

Since then, I'm running Hub Watchdog and everything is the way it was before the inclusion of my ZEN25 devices (a couple of slowdowns per day not at a specific time). In my personal case, the problem seems to be the ZWave chip firmware OR the way S2 was implemented. I really hope HE staff will send the update soon so we can know.

Hope it can help some of you.

Thank you for working with us on that and helping us set up the test environment @jbilodea! I hope this information can help other users who have experienced any issues with the plug on the C7 hub. As we mentioned before, they key it to skip S2 security.

@agnes.zooz

My two zen25s were included w/o security.

Only device with security at the time was my Alfred DB2-B lock and three ring 2nd gen extenders.

Both zen25 on FW v.2 with all reporting disabled and parameter 18 set to 1

After months with the c7 I started to experience hard slowdowns on my zwave only.

@bobbyD investigated and recommend removing both zen25s.

My problems disappeared.

I am a Zooz fan boy but I will not install the zen25 again.

Good to know ! I'm still monitoring my Zwave network with Hub Watchdog. For now I still have couple of slowdowns per day as usual. I removed 1 ZEN25 (no need anymore) so I have 4 ZEN25 active. Fingers crossed because I like this device.

I'm sorry to hear that the plugs didn't work for you. We've been trying to replicate it for months now and the plugs work well for us when added without security. We recently followed @jbilodea's recommendation to set up the watchdog and did more testing. We could replicate slow-downs with security enabled but once we added it without security and ran for over 48 hours, the plugs were working just fine. So we're equally stumped and disappointed that we need to keep Hubitat off of the supported hubs list for this device...

Perhaps the anticipated 700-series radio firmware update will improve this situation.

I'm so excited to try this!

I know you guys have spent a lot of time on this issue. It’s appreciated.

I have noticed something with this ZEN25 I cannot figure out, possibly a bug that is causing excessive zwave traffic. I am running a zniffer at the moment so it is very noticeable.

I have all my parameters set to have the reporting enabled but it should be minimal. But the voltage reports seem to come in with every small change even though I have it set to 6 hours. @agnes.zooz is this intended to report voltage with every 0.1 change in voltage?

Keep in mind this is the events from just the main parent device, it is also sending multichannel encapsulated updates for both plugs as well (the voltage should be the same but it sends it for them every time).

My Settings:
Text map of exact numbers reported back from device for each param num
[1:1, 2:5, 3:3600, 4:10800, 5:21600, 6:10800, 7:10, 8:0, 9:60, 10:0, 11:60, 12:0, 13:60, 14:0, 15:60, 16:0, 17:1, 18:0]

Screenshot (from my own custom driver, so may look a little different from stock driver)

@agnes.zooz I have 2 of these devices and noticed today while running some test that they are reporting different hardware versions, even though the labels on both are marked "VER: 1.0d".

What is the difference between the two hardware versions?

VersionReport: VersionReport(zWaveLibraryType:3, zWaveProtocolVersion:5, zWaveProtocolSubVersion:3, firmware0Version:2, firmware0SubVersion:0, hardwareVersion:1, firmwareTargets:0, targetVersions:[])

VersionReport: VersionReport(zWaveLibraryType:3, zWaveProtocolVersion:5, zWaveProtocolSubVersion:3, firmware0Version:2, firmware0SubVersion:0, hardwareVersion:2, firmwareTargets:0, targetVersions:[])

Is it possible one of these has less issues than the other?

Being part of the Beat testers group, I'm running the new ZWave firmware update since Saturday around noon. Since that time I'm also running Hub Watchdog and that's wonderful !

Before the firmware update, I had 4-6 slowdowns per day. Since then, I have one slowdown between 2AM and 3AM and everything is fast for the rest of the day. I suspect that HE is doing a maintenance or something around 2AM. I also use 4 ZEN25. So right now that's a wonderful improvement.

That's an interesting find. Doesn't seem to be a specific parameter for voltage level alone. I was just reading up on these plugs the other day, as I have a couple of situations where these would work nicely with the two outlets and the usb. Are they still considered not HE C-7 compatible?

I have one and it works fine, I was even using it on S2 for a while but have since paired it with no security. Others have reported slow downs when they have multiple going even if they disable all the reporting. Possibly this Zwave update that is in beta right now will help. I have also seen people saying it causes issues even on a C5 but its just not as noticeable. I disabled reporting totally on mine recently and I am only getting events when my activity checker refreshes it now. But still want to know why it is spamming the voltage reports.

thanks @jtp10181 , I think I will pick up a couple and see for myself... I also noticed in this thread that there are different hardware versions, not sure if that has anything to do with it.

It's definitely not intended and not normal or something we've been able to replicate. Is the plug included with or without security?

The hardware is the same, 2.0 just stands for the firmware 2.0 where we added the ability to disable any energy reporting (as mentioned in the change log here).

Without security, plugged into a normal wall receptacle. I know its not caused by the driver because as soon as I disable all reporting then it stops doing it. Is it normal for the voltage to be perfectly stable in a home? I think it always fluctuates a little.
