Hub migrations from C8 to C8 Pro with missing Zwave LR devices

Just noticed a problem and was curious if anyone else has seen this.

Yesterday i did a migration from a C8 to a C8 pro. Everything seemed fine at first, but i have noticed a few automations that appear to not be working quite right.

I just started looking into it and noticed that it looks like recently added Zwave LR devices were not brought over with the Zwave radio backup/restore in the migration. Everything else appears to have been, just not the zwave LR devices.

I thought the @support_team would like to know and maybe look into it.

This just keeps getting more fun. I have picked one device and try to work through getting it added back. The results haven't been the best.

So first i copied all of my automations to a temp device with device swapp.

Next i tried to simply do a exclusion which seemed to work fine. Then using @jtp10181 new SmartStart appi i went in and re-Enabled the SmartStart entry for the device. Unfortunately, after many minutes nothing happened.

So onto the next option, I performed a factory reset of the Zen77 switch. SmartStart continues to not work.

I was able to include and exclude again with or without security manually. but no LR with Smartstart.

When looking at the logs i see this

Any idea guys

I am getting ready to include without security and try a firmware update to see if that will kick it.

I'm not going to try to step too far into Jeff's territory here, but it may help to have a screenshot of the settings you're using in his SmartStart app.

Here it is. I didn't make any changes when adding the device Smartstart info from the mobile app, and then i don't do anything in this app other then enable and disable. I just disabled them here after they were added. I was just excited about this being a potential backup for all of the Smart Start items in the system

The last thing i just did was reboot the hub and remove power so the Zwave Radio could fully reset. While that was down i did a factory reset on the switch itself.

Going to try to add it back now and do a firmware update if it is behind.

This is a Zooz Zen77 Dimmer Switch.

I've been struggling adding LR devices to my C8. I had devices that were originally mesh, that I created virtuals, removed, switched to Smart Start with the LR checked in @jtp10181 's app, and encountered the same type of issues you are describing... I was eventually able to get them added after multiple tries, but routinely got the same:

Z-Wave device id: 0 failed S2 bootstrapping - Unknown status code - the device needs to be excluded then included again to use securely.

Then I tried adding new out of the box devices and continue to have the same issues...

For me, the devices are there, but they don't show up in the z-wave settings page...

Have you checked to see if they are still in devices, but maybe not in z-wave settings?

Take a look at my other thread...

The boostrapping error issue was brought up during beta, if you have access here is the post.

Not sure when/if it will be fixed judging by this response.

The only thing known to fix it is a radio reset. :scream_cat:

Maybe my initial experience was not normally I had two devices that were mesh and removed and added them back easily as LR. I then installed two more switches and added them very easy with LR and those are the ones you see above.

Yea.. That won't be fun I would be better off turing my C8 back on :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

I just got the C8 Pro for the CPU and the extra memory becuase my regular C8 was running around 200MB after a few days.

Are you referring to the 4 devices with full details in the screenshot in post #4 above?

Those are paired Mesh, not LR. Or perhaps I'm totally misinterpreting things here - my apologies if so... This whole LR pairing thing is quite the ...errr... adventure in these early days here!

No those 4 devices are Zwave 700 devices and don't support LR. It is the two that are not showing included yet.

The disappointing thing is that this is a brand new hub. It was delivered by Amazon yesterday.

I would also add that the adding of the devices back is one problem now. But why didn't they get migrated in the first place. Every other Zwave device did except the LR devices.

I would guess something is broken with the LR nodes in the backup, so not migrated.
Then possibly that also broken your ZW database causing the boostrapping error?

You could try doing a radio reset on the new hub and then migrating again from the same backup. Worth a try anyway if you have not attempted already.

I also boxed my C8 after the last backup. I could power it back up and take another backup. Then restore from that.

The one device i have been messing with is jacked but the other 3 would work if they come over with a new backup.

Well that will be the next step since we have confirmed the Radio is totally jacked we will see what happens. I am in the middle of that one switch firmware update.. So it will have to be after that.

One question i have is does this leave the whole zwave radio in a bad state overall so i will need to do something eventually.

Per Jeff's comment, you could easily try the first redo using the existing backup.

If you got the same results, you could then take the extra steps of doing another backup from your original C8.

Seems more likely that there's nothing wrong with the first backup, it may be more about general problems with restoring LR in a backup.

No idea what causes it exactly. I have the issue on my main hub which came from a C7 migration a while back. I did not try to migrate LR nodes obviously. Everything else on my main hub is fine I just cannot add LR nodes to it. Only one other person had the issue during beta.

My C8 was migrated to from a C7 so not sure if migration has anything to do with it. It had zero issues with LR

This is exactly why i started this thread. I figured it was probably a slim possibility it was tested during the beta. Wanted to get it looked at if it is something that just got overlooked somehow.

Ok going to try the radio rest and then a soft reset so i can restore the radios. :crossed_fingers: :hand_with_index_finger_and_thumb_crossed:

I just had an epiphany. I think my hub was delivered with 2.3.7 on it when i got it. It didn't update to 2.3.9 before the migration completed and i am wondering if that broke stuff.

LR Devices are still missing. Going to do a wuick reset of the device and try to add it again to see if i get that error message.

OK that didn't change anything. Going to do a another full reset so it is cleared and powered off and then will power back on the old C8 so i can get a fresh backup.

Here are the LR devices as shown on my old C8
