Convince me to replace my C-8 with a C-8 Pro today

what devices in HomeKit are exclusive to the PRO? (this probably will push me over the fence as well)

He's referring to the built-in home kit integration which is only available with the C8 pro.

I heard if you were going to buy a C8 pro they're jumping straight to the C10.

My guess is that there are still plenty of people migrating to the Pro, so there is really no need for a new hub right now, at least not from the sales perspective. There is no Zwave 900 series chip on the horizon that would force the usual update on the hardware side.

At some point it will make sense, but the fact that I have a very loaded up single C8 running along just fine makes me think the horsepower is not really needed yet, not to mention the divide and conquer upgrade option available with Hub Mesh, for anyone who really reaches the limits of the Pro right now.

@kilowatts How did you generate that report. Is it built into the normal Windows 11 UI or is it a custom thingamajig?

My goal is to stay on one hub for everything. Right now I have the single C8, and HA on a PI4. One too many hubs for me already, but HA is really just a slave to Hubitat anyway and I hardly ever go into the UI. I have two other C8 (various reasons) and an old C7 sitting gathering dust, but I will still probably move to a Pro if needed, before firing those up and going mesh.

Is it just me or is the pro still on Presidents’ Day sale price….

Hubitat commonly extends their sale prices, but for how long is not something you can count on. Better grab it while you can if you're planning to.

Agree, they can hang on to a sales price for a bit longer than expected and then poof, gone. C8-Pro at $159 is a great deal, IMHO.

!00% agree. Far better price than competitors are offering for the value you receive from a Hubitat hub.

I suggest you go right ahead and buy the C-8 Pro. Why?

(Cynic Mode: on)

Because if you do, the new C-9 will be released about 3 weeks to three months later. That happens to me all the time with various products, so why not you? LOL

(Cynic Mode: off)

I got the Pro during the President's Day Sale. Now to go ahead with migrating from the C8 to the C8 Pro... then I can decide if I bring the C8 back online in a Mesh. I suspect that I can run everything on the C8 Pro without the need for the C8.

I've gone through a quick read of the instructions for the migrations - seems that it's rather simple except potentially for some of the Cloud based Apps. Any further tips/tricks to be aware of?

Shortcuts lead to long delays... My only suggestion is turn the "quick read" into a "full and detailed examination" and you'll have nothing but sunny blue skies.

I have a hub for each floor:

  1. 1st floor: C8 (replaced a C7). Used for zigbee and dashboard.
  2. 2nd floor: above C7. Used to connect to a touchy thermostat on that floor (separate zigbee channel). Also run wifi/cloud devices.
  3. Basement: a c7 bought cheaply and recently to connect to a touchy thermostat on that floor (yet another zigbee channel).

The c8 just locked up recently but unclear if it's a low-ram issue. Just installed an app to automatically reboot it if ram runs low. Considering a c8-pro but maybe I can hold out until something better comes along.

Super curious, what kind of bluetooth devices are you using?
I'm looking for an excuse as well for the pro. I have an unused 8 sitting around as my C5 (main) and C7 (extra apps) are humming away just fine.

Just these strip lights I already had, that run off a Bluetooth phone app. I found they use the Elkbledom HACS integration, so I installed that and it worked out of the box. HA already knew about the Bluetooth radio on the PI4, so it just installed and it worked. I brought that device into Hubitat with HADB, and it became a full RGB color light device. I figured I would start looking at what was out there.

Bit of a story after that...

Last Christmas, I was looking at lights that use Bluetooth for this, as lots of the smart Xmas stuff is Bluetooth. I found one of those tall, lights on a pole trees, that have individual light control so you can design patterns and animations. It used the My Fairy app or something, and I found HA had an integration for it. Great!

I bought a long range USB Bluetooth Radio for the PI4, figuring I wasn't going to make it to the front yard on the PI antenna. HA found the Bluetooth dongle and pulled it in. I now have two radio options when installing Bluetooth devices.

Sadly, I never got to try it. Amazon totally dropped the ball on the order. Long story short, after two orders of that tree, and Amazon giving me $70 for the hassles, I never got a tree. I ended up making $70 off of Amazon, however.

I may find some cheap Bluetooth Lights for the yard this summer, and I'm definitely going to get that tree again for this year. I really want to try out that USB Bluetooth with Antenna device, and see what the range is like.

I’ll have a C8 Pro for sale soon…
