Convince me that I should convince you.
If even like to see a Hubitat software installer that I could install on a homelab proxmox LXC and forego a physical device. To me that would be ideal.
Kind of like what Homey lets you do right now?
I think, at least for now, Hubitat prefers to maintain a tight integration between the platform and the hardware it runs on.
A substantial amount of @support_team requests arise from hardware issues (WiFi, Z-Wave, Zigbee); that fraction would be less resolvable/addressable without that tight integration.
Yeah I get it and know why they choose not too. I can wishful think though lol! I’m not interested in homey.
Don’t get yourself SLZB-MR4 or higher and go to Homeassistant - run one radio for Zigbee - one for thread. Use zigbee2mqtt, If you have Zwave devices leave them on hubitat - proxy through Hubitat (HADB) for Alexa. HA is much more fun and much more compatible. I am almost done with Hubitat and its limitations - Alexa integration and zwave is what I use it for.
HomeKit integration is much cleaner for me now actually becuase I was running homebridge seperately, since Hubitat integration / compatibility is always a wild card. Even my ecosmart remotes are useful once again without exotic hoops.
And with that powerful standalone coordinator in the middle of my house all the flakiness in the zigbee mesh is gone - plus it’s much cheaper
Are you talking about the ones that came with Ecosmart Zigbee bulbs for dirt cheap at Home Depot years ago?
Yeah I bought a bunch of them, mostly because that was the cheapest zigbee bulb back then, remote was a bonus.
I was same and still using 10+ of the bulbs around the house. The remotes never worked well within Hubitat so I kept a SmartThings Hub going for a little while so I could use them because they were great too. Unfortunately, the remotes are long gone now replaced mostly by picos.
Not a good model for Hubitat though. What little revenue they earn, it comes from hardware margins and subscriptions. If you hollow out the hardware margin, then subscriptions would need to rise to cover their costs.
Then there is the support load that comes from a user base using every possible permutation of hardware platform and the inevitable knock-on support burden that falls to Hubitat. Not a good resource drain for a small company.
I am happy to buy the hardware from Hubitat knowing they sized it appropriately and stand behind it.
Yes that would be a good reason to keep supporting them- hopefully with the ai tools now they would be able to up their game. They have been a very decent company kept the hw + firmware updated through the years. Very open and supportive staff and community. Those are all the reasons to keep giving them love.
I'm still rocking a C-8 with well over 100 devices. I have an older C-5 that played-well with some older zigbee devices so I meshed them. The C-8 pro is appealing but I'm also not certain that I need it. The hubitat team/company is awesome and I want to continue supporting them, but me thinks I may wait things out a bit. Also, I'm now using HA in my home -- initially for the frigate camera system with some darn good object detection. But now I'm exploring the other things HA can do. My short-term assessment is that Hubitat is WAY easier to manage devices and rules. Perhaps it's just because HA is new to me, but the web xface and YAML code seems much more challenging. However, HA dashboards are impressive and the community support is incredible for nearly every device you throw at it. So... For now, I'm using the C-8 to manage most of of my devices, rules/automations, etc and dashboarding and graphing things (and managing my home cameras) with HA.
So true for the majority of us.
There are a fair number here running both HE & HA (including me) but I am 95% HE at this point as I have been trying to simplify my setup more and more as I (gasp) get older. Projects involving multiple vendors and hubs that were fun (and useful) years ago start feeling like added complexity that I'd like to shift away from. ![]()
As @danabw said there are several of us running both HE and HA. I don't use HA for cameras but I use it for "niche" devices as I call them that HE just didn't support at that time. Now as HE developed more I find I am moving more of them over to HE. However, I still use HA for several things including a few zigbee devices that just doesn't play well in HE.
As for the community however I have had a totally different experience with the HA community. Yes, there is a lot of knowledge there but if you aren't "one of them" I found the community to be closed off and you better be able to figure out how to do it by reading their posts. Don't get me wrong there are some good people over there (a lot of them are from here on that board as well) but to me the two communities don't compare.
Well, I done did it. Upgraded to PRO. Migration went so well I only needed 1/2 cup of coffee. Pleasantly surprised.
+1 on the community, the vibe here is open, friendly and respectful - I don't recall a jerk or condescending comment here. HA has a bigger community and all that comes with it.
That is excellent to hear! ![]()
(Can I has the other half of your coffee?) ![]()
Exactly, that is why I wanted to point out there is still good people there, just harder to find.
Too late, I drank it to celebrate ![]()
Just want to say this mirrors my experience. I'm also running two hubitat hubs and HA on an RPi4. I don't think I've EVER gotten a response to a question on the HA forums. Here on HE I usually get helpful responses within hours. There are lots of things I don't love about HE, but the community is one of the best things.
This is my exact experience as well. I never get responses over there. Well actually I have gotten a couple, but they were from members of this community that are also members over there. This shows you what a great group of individuals that the people here are.
I have said it before this community is one of the reasons I would not fathom leaving Hubitat.
