Convince me to replace my C-8 with a C-8 Pro today

I have a C-8 and around 100 devices. Am happy with it, but I love to buy new toys since I'm retired and like to tinker. Yeah, the processor is a bit faster and there's more RAM, and it does Bluetooth. I'm trying to figure out whether the Bluetooth add-on would be worth tinkering with. I'm not sure what devices I have at home that would use BT. Any thoughts? I'm trying to talk myself into it, not out of it.

I'm thinking of doing the same - and my main reason is memory. I have an alert set to trigger on 150M free of RAM, and notice that trigger once or twice a day. So, I'm always considering when I see a sale on the C8-Pro of upgrading - especially as I add more apps/automations. Haven't (yet) pulled the trigger though.

Because you are retired isn't enough to make you do it

You worked hard, you deserve it.

You always wanted to try Hubitat Hub Mesh.

It's only money.

You only live once.

You really need the points from your credit card purchase.

You can actually save money by buying it now.

Why the he :ice_hockey: :ice_hockey: not.

If he used home automation, I would bet that Tom Wilson is the kind of guy who'd use a C-8 Pro. He could automate lighting up his future Order of Canada for taking on Crinon who should have been ejected immediately.

I have been trying to convince myself of that for about the last year. I bought the C8 just before they released the Pro, but I would have waiting for the Pro had I known it was coming.

I'm pushing my C8 pretty hard, but it is still getting along. I also have a 2nd C8 I could mesh instead, but I really don't want to split things between hubs. I already use HA to bring Bluetooth devices into Hubitat with HADB, so Bluetooth isn't swaying me either.

For now, I have decided to wait. I really doubt a C8-Ultimate is on its way any time soon, and there is no impending Zwave 900 series chip in the works for a C9 to be needed. Zwave is focusing on the 2025B revision, which still uses the 800 series chip. Zwave chips historically push a new hub revision, but with no new Zwave chip in the near future I don't see a new hub release anytime soon.

My understanding is that Hubitat is waiting until you order a C8-Pro to release the C9-[fill-in-the blank]. So yes, we all want you to upgrade now, please.

Don't be selfish like @chrisbvt. :chicken:

Take one for the team.

Yeah, not that migrations are all that bad or time consuming, but that is another reason for me; I just don't want to deal with a migration right now. :grimacing:

You also get to use devices made for HomeKit with the C-8 Pro.

And I would also say that if you have the funds available and are retired - go for it!

I ran all last week with the Hub Low on Memory Reboot Now warning, and the C8 never skipped a beat. I finally rebooted it and updated it yesterday, and all is good now.

I've been working on updating the SunCalc Driver for about two months now on the side, to add irradiance, illuminance, and input from an external sensor to get a percent of expected lux, and derive a current sky condition. With all the debug logging and me contantly causing exceptions while testing, I believe that is what caused my low memory issue. My SunCalc Illuminance Driver is working pretty well now, though, I'm going to let it roll through rest of the week, and share the code this weekend.

I was worried that the number of calculations that driver does every minute was going to cause me to buy a Pro, but it looks like that is not going to be an issue so far.

You don't need to replace the C-8 with a C-8 Pro.

Instead, you should get a C-8 Pro and use it along side your C-8. Migrate all your Zigbee/Z-wave to the C-8 Pro, and then reset the C-8 and use it for other integrations (e.g., network ones), shared devices between them via Hub Mesh.

Spoken like the wonderful enabler that we all hope to find here.

@jedi1844's post here was like a five year old asking his friends "Should I have another candy?"

Depending on how complex your setup is it wouldn't hurt to have both...

Right now I have five hubs (c4 - c8p) mostly because I'm lazy. If I get around to finally sorting out my system I'll "only" have three. C8-p for my main system and logic, C8 for my Zigbee lights (stoopid Sylvania repeaters), C7 for cloud and heavyweight integrations. My older C5 and C7 need to be retired but I haven't gotten around to taking the last few bits off of them. (That's where the lazy comes in.)

In short, there's no reason to upgrade if you are happy with the performance. There is also no reason not to upgrade if you want to play with the latest version if it is within your budget. If $200 is expendable to you then go for it. If it is a stretch then base it on how well the current system is working for you.

Two hour gap from last post and then three within minutes saying Go! Go! Go!

I just ordered it. What the heck; one only lives once.

Next I'll be detailing my device inventory for some ideas of how to use both C-8 and C-8 Pro rather than just the new one.

Any whispers about a C9 or beyond? I see a few threads about memory leaks/constraints and CPU loading that make me wonder why not a higher tier unit with major CPU and memory increase? Why not a Raspberry PI 5 CPU/memory footprint shoehorned with the C8 pro peripherals?

I have about 150 devices and the regular C-8 was just bogged down for me, sluggish, with lots of delays. When I upgraded to the C-8 Pro I had absolutely no hiccups or slowdowns, and my HE CPU is basically just twiddling its thumbs, cool as a cucumber.

If you like to tinker, then you'll be happy. I have hundreds of RM rules, and while it was fine to build them with my C7s, working in RM was getting pretty slow. Now it's a real pleasure to use.

The recent bluetooth addition was a nice surprise, but for me it's all about Rule Machine and how fast I can build rules that just work. That ranks top priority for me.
