Cant remove zwave node

I have a pair of zwave nodes that are unknown devices, cant be discovered when i click discover and when i hit refresh they just sit in pending forever until i reboot. If i click remove, nothing happens.

These are the logs i have when i hit remove:

2022-07-08 05:39:12.530 pm Failed node 2E remove status: no reply

2022-07-08 05:39:02.535 pm Z-Wave Network responded with Busy message.

2022-07-08 05:39:02.528 pm Failed node 2E remove status: no reply

Any idea how to get rid of these?! They seem to be causing issues in my network.

If it is still communicating, it might prevent removal. They are probably a device that paired immediately after this. I would see if the 1-2 devices after this have a similar Device Class as this ghost node.

In other words, if this 2E node is a SPECIFIC_TYPE_POWER_SWITCH_MULTILEVEL then find the next instance of that same thing.

Remove power from that next device in the column, and try to remove the ghost again.

They are ghosts. These are caused by failed pairings. As @neonturbo says, look at the device after it. Likely that device is what caused the ghost and it must be completely disconnected from power to remove the ghost.

Make sure your z-wave stack is updated (on the z-wave details page there will be an update z-wave firmware button. If it's not there you've already done it)

Remove power from device.

Shut down hub from settings menu then unplug the hub (at wall not hub) for 5 mins and power back up.

Go back to your z-wave details page. If the remove button is not there, click refresh on that line till it's there then click remove. Only click once. It will disappear or prompt for a force remove.

Rinse and repeat for each ghost.

Make sure your z-wave stack is updated (on the z-wave details page there will be an update z-wave firmware button. If it's not there you've already done it)

??... it must be completely disconnected from power to remove the ghost.??

So, if the next unit is a wall switch/dimmer, that wall switch/dimmer must be disconnected from power? Is there no other way? What if the suspect wall switch is excluded and them re-included, would that work?

Should not matter if the device was reset or paired with a different node ID, but that is the current wisdom. Really it is just people taking random guesses at what could be going on since the zwave node removal process is apparently broken.

If removal is still not working, IMO the only explanation is that the zwave node removal is broken garbage, which we have been told is the fault of the SDK and out of control of the Hubitat team.

Thanks for your answers

??... the fault of the SDK and out of control of the Hubitat team...? Is the removal tool not an element of the Hubitat system?

Hubitat presents to us in a UI but its operation is coordinate by the z-wave chip which has its own firmware / SDK provided by Silicon Labs. Basically the hub asks the chip to remove the node, and the chip responds back with a code, either success or failure.

Thanks for your explanation, and attempts to help. Much to ponder. As for removing the power from the switch/dimmer, as suggested, probably the easiest way is to deal with the circuit at the breaker/fuse panel.

A question. What if I created a backup, then factory reset the C-8, then reloaded the backup,...would the ghosts still be there?

Only if you use a cloud backup with hub protect. Local backups do not back up the radios. That said, the backups backup the corrupt radio database and restore as such. Your best bet is to get a usb z-wave stick (amazon, probably a zooz) and pair it as a secondary controller and use the silabs software to remove the ghost(s)

@bcopeland has said before that if the physical device is pingable (as in joined under another software node id) the ghost will have problems removing it. I assume because the physical device has a constant identifier (serial number) that is used in the removal process.

Thanks for that. I have an Aeotec ZW095-A that I haven't used for years. I'll give that a shot. This may not be the place to mention this, but I am experiencing significant delay between command and action (i.e. using the HE interface, the time between pressing ON or Off, and having the associated device responding can be many seconds to minutes.) I thought my transition from Vera to HE would be smother. Also, I had a C-7 with a few devices and didn't seem to have any significant issues. I bought the C-8 when I decided to move all (currently 91) to it. Thanks for listening. 73

Can you post your z-wave details page in it's entirety?

I honestly can't read that. Can you do a screen shot using Windows snip? So it looks like this

Need to know how long since the last hub reboot when those screenshots were taken?
You have a number of ghost nodes with a bunch of neighbors, were these recently force removed from the devices list?

@brwill as @jtp10181 says, you have a bunch of ghosts. You need to get rid of those to make your mesh healthy. Right now it's in bad shape.

Yes, I know, but as previously written, I am not being too successful. There was a suggestion to get a hub stick, and I mentioned that I had one, but I also have an HE C-7 in service with a single device. Can I link the two ( c7 & c8) to help get rid of the ghosts?

No... But if you have a z-wave stick, just follow this step by step
