Cannot Pair Zooz73 800 LR as LR Z-Wave to Hubitat

Adding to the above, this doc should also clear up some confusion:

To add to what @hydro311 and @bertabcd1234 posted above, here's a table comparing z-wave and z-wave LR. I have highlighted the differences that matter for this discussion ....

@aaiyar, @bertabcd1234, @hydro311, it's a shame you can't use LR devices to extend a non-LR mesh. I was so hoping I could. I have two Z-Wave locks that are hard to keep connected to the hub due to a weak signal. The locks are installed in steel doors, which I'm pretty sure is at least part of the problem. I can get a good connection with HE when the hub is next to the doors, but when I try to run them from about 20 feet away, they eat up battery power and often drop off the network.

I have several non-LR Z-Wave repeaters right next to the doors, but inexplicably, the doors don't seem to want to connect through the repeaters.

It seems there are very few Z-Wave locks using the 800 series with LR capabilities.

I'm still working on figuring out how to pair my LR Zooz switch with the habitat. I will update you soon.

Kwikset makes one.

6 Months ago I bought the latest version of this Kwikset 620 lock only now to find the LR version is out. What bad luck! Annoying.

I have 5 of these purchased about a year ago - none of them are LR. One of them is very far away from the hub (over 50 ft, and goes through multiple walls). Has no issue connecting directly to the hub.

I use a replacement z-wave antenna .....

@velvetfoot, @bertabcd1234, @hydro311,
Now, back to my problem pairing a Zooz ZEN73 800 LR switch with Smartstart.

Recap:
As everyone has pointed out, the Apple version of the Hubitat Mobile App cannot use Smartstart to pair the LR range device in LR (S2) mode. Beta apps are unavailable for iPhone users unless they are on the App Provider's developer team. However, the old app will still work on my iPhone, but, while the old app provides the "Smartstart" screen, it doesn't seem to recognize the QR Code.

I also have a "Smartstart Manager App" installed on my Hub, which I can access via a web browser. But this requires me to enter the actual DSK number. I only have the QR code and not the number.

Do either of you know how to get the DSK number from the QR code?

If I could get the beta app so can you.

Wrong. public beta via TestFlight

For problematic SmartStart inclusions here is what I recommend.

  • Delete the SS entry.
  • Shut down the hub and unplug.
  • Factory reset the device
  • Power off device.
  • Boot hub.
  • Add SmartStart Entry
  • Open new logs window for hub.
  • Power up device.
  • Watch for SmartStart started log entry, should be within 60 seconds.
  • Device will pair within 30-60 seconds after that.

You can use a QR scanning app to capture the QR's numerical output -- it'll be a long string of numbers. The iPhone's own camera may even be able to do it.

The DSK string you need to put in the SS Manager App is 40 numbers (8 groups of 5). The QR scan output is longer than that, but you just need to find where the 5-digit DSK starts in that output (it's unfortunately not at the beginning, at least in my limted testing here), and then go from there -- copy the 5-digit DSK and the next 35 digits after it (40 digits total).

That's a lot of futzy parsing to carefully muddle through, but it should work.

Disclaimer -- I've never done it this way

How do/did you get it?

I was playing with this earlier today. The 40-digit code starts with digit 13 (capture the QR using your phone's camera, throw away the first 12 digits, then the next 40 should be the code--check to make sure it starts with the 5-digit DSK).

Thanks to @hydro311 (Chris), @bertabcd1234 (Robert), @velvetfoot, @aaiyar (Ashok), and @jtp10181 (Jeff), this problem was solved by excluding and then factory resetting the switch and using the beta release of the Hubitat Mobile app, which allowed the app to connect locally to the Hub.

Your explanation of extracting the DSK code from the QR code is good information for all Hubitat users (and other people).

Since you have ZEN73's, you could be adventurous and try my led mod. I love it. Just be careful drilling-just a little too much destroys the led.

@velvetfoot, very cool. Thanks for letting me know about this clever improvement. I have not explored this, but smart switch LEDs might have more practical uses than just the usual signaling on or off conditions.
