C8 to C8 Pro Migration, Recommended practices

Hubitat gave up. I filed a warranty claim and they say they don't have a resolution for the issue, telling me to return the hub and get a refund.

Until a C-8Pro v2 or a C-9 pops up, with migration capability, I'm locked into the C8. I'm wondering if my C-8 dies, whether migration would work to a new hub. Given my availability at home, to rebuild my zwave would take months. and a lot of work, digging devices out of walls and the like.

Unfortunately, a different hardware will not resolve this problem. It is a software issue that a small number of users encounter. Unless the underlying software issue is identified and addressed, affected users may need to rebuild the Z-Wave network manually.

You shouldn't have a problem migrating going forward, assuming that the Z-Wave mesh is healthy.

Hi @bobbyD but do you think my Zwave mesh was not healthy? What did you see in the logs? I believe it was ghost-free. In the meantime, Mariusz at Hubitat Europe has been great and proposed to send another C8Pro for me to try to migrate again. If it doesn't work, I'll return both for a refund.

Nothing in logs, other than everything looking fine.

And yes, Mariusz @Ultrasmart.pl is awesome!

Just noticed this in the release notes for 2.4.3.121: “Improved reliability of migrations to C-8 Pro.”

Will have to try this…

That's a beta release, so any discusision about it should be moved to the beta forum.

Hi @bobbyD ,

I'm on beta 2.4.3.133 C8 and just received a (prime deal) C8 Pro today. Am I safe to try to migrate?

Fwiw .. I have still not been able ( since June) to successfully migrate a primarily Zwave C8 to C8Pro, while all devices seem to be affected to some degree, LR seem to be the hardest hit.

Given what I've seen, I'm hesitant to attempt.

Is the migration issues most have experienced resolved? I know at least one user still unable to migrate. I do have hub protect on my C8.

Fixes are in the latest build for migration, so that should help.

If you don't like the results, simply shut down and unplug your C8-Pro and go back to using your C8 and await additional platform releases. If you did have significant issues that the community can't help you resolve, ideally then you can report the issues to HE before falling back.

Pretty much low risk and vast majority of users migrate w/out issue...worst case you spend some time and incur some temporary partner-approval issues.

Attempting migration is safe. For 99% of users is successful. There are some who run into trouble and unfortunately, it might come to manually excluding/including devices.

Thanks!

The comments re: adding the C8 Pro to beta are not necessary?

I guess if it goes OK, I will have to reach out to move the hub protect sub over?

My longest single attempt at migration was four days. My wife’s dagger eyes finally pushed me back. Most of my mains powered devices never migrated, none of my Zwave LR devices ever migrated, and only a handful of battery sensors (mostly Zooz motion sensors) did successfully migrate, but since the switches and outlets didn’t, it did not matter.

Speaking of Matter, that was fine. The issues I am seeing are very specific to Zwave. My most recent attempt at migration was yesterday. I migrated about 930 or 1000 in the morning. By 600 on 7 of about 30 devices had migrated, and of those seven, four were mains powered Zwave 700. Again, no LR devices migrated. I have three mains powered LR devices. Those have never migrated.

When I switch back to the original hub everything comes right back within maybe five to ten minutes. This leads me to believe the problem, whatever it is, it is specific to C8pro. I will make some other observations, but since they involve a beta version, I do not feel it appropriate to discuss at length except to say it didn't help with a C8 to C8 Pro migration.

They do not.

My experience so far has been this is not possible. I have been unable to include devices to a C8pro (three separate hubs). The hub randomly goes unresponsive and the devices never get included,

My Longest running try at letting a migration "settle in" has been 6 days with NOTHING working. Yeah the dagger eyes were out in full effect. after 6 days I had to relent and roll back. I do belive 6 days is an excessive amount of time for things to settle in. I have heard three days, but even at that theyre should be noticable improvements, and I havenot been seenig that. When I roll back to the original hubs, everything works in a few minutes. I really think within a few hours you shoudl start to see improvments, but that is not what i am seeing,

Six days is definitely way longer than I would ever be allowed to exist if dagger eyes had been engaged, and also longer than even my own patience would have allowed. Def something going on w/your migration that is going to take some help to figure out.

eap. @bcopeland has been helping me but so far no luck. even wsith .133. Im trying a full reset now and will try again on the latest beta. to be honest Im not expecting much of a different result. Adn this isnt just a migration issue, I am also unable to add devices to the hub as well.

In that case you possibly have a dead Zwave radio.
Warranty time?

Since he's been working w/Bryan it seems likely that would already have been explored and deterined not the issue... :man_shrugging:

Obvious to some of us.

I know of someone who could never get a migration to work (until he shutdown to old hub :flushed:)!!!
