Zooz/The Smartest House -> Jasco

I just saw this announcement:

I kinda hate to see massive consolidation, but can see where it gives Zooz more resources (and, likely, a lot of money for the Zooz founders). Still, I worry about it limiting competitive options.

Thoughts?

Interesting...I'm a long-term Jasco/GE/UltraPro user (literally all the wired switches and dimmers in my home), so I may be a bit biased, but I think this will mostly mean good things for Zooz and customers. More design/dev resources for Zooz to play with should mean more interesting products/capabilities. My interactions w/employees at Jasco and Zooz on support/warranty have always been positive, so they are well aligned IMHO in that area.

Let's go!

Me too! I have been buying GE/Jasco switches since 2014. I upgraded them to 500 series with their 2017 vintage that had the capacitor issue but they honored the warranty and I replaced them all again so I have been happy.

My gripe early on with Zooz was that the white paddle switches didn't match store bought dumb switches or the Jasco ones - much brighter white. So after buying a few I never bought any additional. I do like their relays though, good stuff.

@agnes.zooz - excited to hear this news and want to wish you good luck!

I hope Zooz quality and innovation remains the same!

Yup.

And they fixed this right away!

Same here. Hoping they keep making interesting devices. I use Lutron for switches so it's not a big deal but love zooz for their relay modules.

I predict the price of Zooz will immediately increase.

I also predict this is the end of the Zooz's innovative product line. If Jasco really wanted to innovate, they could have done so themselves. They (Jasco) even showed off some interesting prototypes in the past, and promised they were going to make them, but did not.

I typically find that any small, flexible, and creative company that gets bought out by a big conglomerate loses their vision. I hope this is not true in this case, but I don't have much hope, if history is a guide.

I use ZooZ and GE (Jasco made) Z-wave switches too, and definitely ZooZ has a case of color blindness as the White and Light Almond don't match anything out there.

Other than the color matching issue I have no other issues with either manufacturers products, they work well in my system.

Hopefully they continue the weekly specials

What big conglomerate ? Jasco?

Or, they realized that Zooz-ish innovation wasn't in their DNA, so they went out and bought the innovator? Maybe we'll see some Jasco products become a little more innovative?

I know, I'm a bright-skies/"What could go wrong!?" kind of guy...

Zooz will disappear in this transaction, and their service will likely tank. I’m very sad to see this announcement.

You and I both know that’s never the case.

I've been using Zooz since 2018/2019 and after seeing some comments over on Reddit it has me a bit nervous for Zooz's future.

After the announcement of Schneider Electric purchasing Shelly, I figured it was only a matter of time before it happened to Zooz.

What I'm curious about is the terms of this deal. Is Jasco going to own 100% of Zooz or only a certain percentage. Is there an escape clause if Jasco doesn't hold up their deal of the deal or isn't what Zooz thought they were getting.

Jasco-for "Pros"
Zooz-for "DIY'ers"
LOL

Perhaps questioning the future of Z-Wave itself would be in order.

Jasco doesn't really seem like some sort of predatory conglomerate, they're certainly not giant. I hope it works out for both of them. The Z-Wave train isn't likely going to be the smoothest ride.

I don't know who owns Jasco or how either company is/was structured, but big-eats-little-buyouts are almost always structured so that any piece of the pie that the little company ownership is based off the new, larger pie, not the original.

Didn't Zooz and Jasco use the same manufacturer, at least at certain points? I thought I remembered that. Could be coincidence, could not be, doesn't matter either way, just trivia.

Maybe I am the only one. But, I bought Jasco (actually GE) switches that failed very quickly. While they did replace all of the switches, it left enough of a bad taste in my mouth that I replaced all of them with Inovelli. With Inovelli's latest changes (and lack of offering for a Zwave switch that is actually a SWITCH), I have been slowly getting Zooz and have been very happy with them.

So, I am not finding myself very enthused by this development. Not a fan, at all, of GE/JASCO. Will just have to wait and see where this goes.

I went to their website and saw that Jasco is a family owned company that give 50% of net profits to charity, so I don't think they are a predatory company but then again family businesses can change really fast especially when getting to the third generation that start to have a word to say on things (I know I was caught in this kind of situation where I worked before), who knows where this will be going but I sure hope all will go well for both companies and that the customer service (@agnes.zooz) and price point Zooz is selling at does not change over time.

What are we talking about here?

Jasco have said they will continue to do that w/Zooz as well. I don't know what charities they give to, maybe I should look that up if they publish it. Not to be cynical, but "Profit" is a moving target depending on how you do your accounting (ask anyone who ever got "% of profits" from a Hollywood movie vs "percentage of gross" share).
