Zen17 Relay Pairing Trouble after Upgrade to C8-Pro

Hub Model C8-Pro
Platform 2.4.1.164

During upgrade from C7 to C8 Pro, my Zen17 relay (working as a garage door opener) didn't successfully transfer over. Followed all the process steps to add it using SmartStart. The device is stuck on "pending" status for almost an hour. Screenshots below:

Any suggestions? Thanks!

This post has good advice for troubleshooting SmartStart:

thanks for this!

I followed all the steps in the post and am still getting the same results: The hub begins Z-wave pairing when the device is powered on - log says Z-Wave SmartStart Join Started, then about 70 seconds later the hub log gives a warning:
Z-Wave Inclusion timed out, status:7

The hub keeps trying to pair, and it keeps failing.

Do you now have a pile of ghost nodes on the zwave details? May need to get rid of some of there are. Or at least shut down the hub again and restart.

Did you change the z-wave gateway to the new ZWJS? If so, change back to ZIP and try it there.

You may also need to move the device closer to the hub temporarily so it can complete pairing. There is a lot of info going during pairing.

This is my only z-wave device. There are no others listed in the SmartStart device list

Tell me how to check this. I did not change anything in the upgrade process.

Already done - they are 4 feet apart

You need to look at the zwave details page. Smart start is just for pairing, not devices on the radio

To check for ghosts, go to "Settings" then "Z-Wave Details"... Are there any entries in that table? If so, post a screenshot of them here.

At the top of that same Z-Wave Details page, if you're on JS (new option just for C8-Pro), you'll see the same button as shown below. If your on (legacy) ZIP, that button will say something like "Switch to JS"

I checked the Z-Wave settings page. There are no entries in the table (no ghost nodes), and the "Switch to ZWaveJS" button is visible ( already in Zip mode)

If you run an exclude does it work (would say unknown device excluded)

What about power supply for the hub? PoE or other? OEM supply?

The C8 Pro is being powered from OEM USB C, not POE splitter.

Yes, when I run the z-wave exclude it does see the generic z-wave device and excludes it.

For info - I submitted a support ticket with Zooz.

I would try doing a manual pairing. If itโ€™s for a garage door make sure you select security and have the QR code with the 5 digit PIN handy.

You could also use the diagnostic tool and do s as zwave radio reset since you donโ€™t have any other devices. Maybe something with the failed migration messed up the radio database.

Thanks for the suggestion! I tried a manual pairing and the Zen17 is still not recognized. The pairing on the hub times out.

I reset the Z-wave radio using the hub diagnostics, then attempted the smartstart pairing (sequence I used is below). Same results - pairing times out and status of the device in the SmartStart list never changes from "pending". Here is my sequence:

  • Start with hub and device powered on
  • Ran hub z-wave radio reset in advanced diagnostics
  • Run z-wave exclude to verify device was excluded - dialog said generic z-wave device was excluded
  • Shut down the hub and unpluged it
  • Factory reset the Zen17 (4 rapid presses, followed by another 4 rapid presses, blue lights and device rebooted as it should indicating a successful reset)
  • Powered off the Zen17
  • Plugged in the c8 Pro and allowed it to boot
  • Added Zen17 QR code to SmartStart using mobile app & camera
  • Opened new logs window for hub. Verified new entry in SmartStart device list with pending status
  • Powered up en17
  • Watch for SmartStart started log entries - almost immediately saw "Z-Wave SmartStart Join Started"
  • at about 70 seconds the pairing timed out, log "Z-Wave Inclusion timed out, status:7"

Then I repeated the above sequence, except tried manual pairing (except this time I did not reset the radio again). Same results - inclusion times out.

This is a strange one. Not sure why it did not carry over in the first place unless you used a local backup instead of cloud? Too late now though since you reset the device.

Try these 3 endpoints in order (post results). Depending on your update path there is a chance the ZIP Gateway got messed up. The last one will reinstall the latest ZIP, if it loads for a minute when you first run it, then it is installing it. Run the last one until you get a message saying it is already installed, then reboot if it seems like it had to install it.

You could also try switching to ZWave JS using the button on the Z-Wave details page, and then try pairing it that way (either pairing method). If that works you could switch back to legacy ZIP since JS still has some issues right now.

I used cloud backup for the migration.

already running v7.18.3

FWI - I also updated hub firmware to 2.4.1.167

Did you swap out the power supply to the new one when you upgraded? The one with the C8 Pro is 2A and the C7 came with a 1A, so if using the old one it could be under powered. You could also try any other 2A or greater USB-A style power block with a A->C cord (what the hub came with).

I would also start a warranty claim: Warranty โ€“ Hubitat Support

Also could try switching to ZWave JS as I suggested above.

Yes, I am using the USB power block and cord that came with the C8 Pro.

Also, I tried another z-wave device I had in my drawer of unused devices - a Jabsco Outdoor smart plug. I only use it during the holidays for outdoor lights. This device also will not pair. Same symptoms - everything seems to be working fine until the last step - then z-wave inclusion and/or SmartStart pairing times out.

I will try switching to ZWave JS ...

Switched to ZWave JS. Same results. Neither z-wave device will pair with the C8 Pro hub. I have one last thing to try - I will shutdown the C8 Pro hub and power up my old C7 hub and try to pair the Zen17 to the old hub. If that works then I'll have to assume there is something wrong with the C8 Pro.

Update: I shutdown the C8 Pro and started up my old C7 hub. Both the Zen17 and the Outdoor Smart Plug paired flawlessly with the C7.

Submitting a warrant claim to replace the C8 Pro
