Z-Wave firmware on C7. ERROR: This firmware target is not upgradable

I guess, I'm just coming from the position of 'if it ain't broke' so-to-speak, and rolling back/re-up dating etc, makes me nervous as I've been burned so many times in the past...

I'm assuming this firmware will never become updateable in a future update?

It is updatable, you just need to downgrade the SDK first so it will work, which is a very minor procedure. I am guessing it will not work again without the steps listed. And it (the old z-wave firmware) is broken, very badly. You will see significant z-wave improvement. I cannot recall anyone who ever had issues caused by the z-wave update so it is very low risk. The SDK downgrade / upgrade is just software so even lower risk.

Not sure what do you mean by this statement, do you mind elaborating?

Apologies, I mean at this point in time I click update in Z-Wave settings and I'm told my current firmware cannot be updated. The solution is, follow the process you've outlined above to downgrade the radio, then update.

But essentially, I'm nervous about downgrading then updating (probably silly, I know). As a consumer I've learnt sometimes just to wait for official fixes rather than 'tinker'. Here I was hoping that a Hubitat FW update would allow me to update my 7.17 radio to 7.18 in the future, if so, I'm happy to wait.

But maybe this update is entirely detached from Hubitat Firmware and it's a Z-Wave alliance issue going from 17-18, in that case I'd like to know that too.

Unless I'm just over thinking this entire thing and shouldn't be so nervous, after all I have cloud and local backups!

This. As I explained the SDK downgrade/upgrade is just software, its not going to break anything.

This is the official fix, posted by staff.

Ok, well, I just followed the official instructions for my C7 and now my zwave is 'unresponsive'. Awesome. Anyone have any guidance on addressing this issue?

Someone else who had an unresponsive z-wave was able to fix it by running the /hub/advanced/installZipgateway718 endpoint again. Keep running that until it tells you that it is already updated, reboot, then run it again and make sure it stuck.

Thanks. I went back to the 715 endpoint and it started working (just did this before your reply) and when I did the 718 endpoint in remained working. So yeah, looks liek that's the deal.

Great!

Yup I would guess the 718 update failed last time and got the radio stuck. Same as what happened to the other person. Luckily that part is easily recoverable.

Did not work with 715 in the beginning. Upgraded to 718, downgraded back to 715 and then worked following your instructions.

Hi,
I have the same problem; originally trying to eliminate a ghost, which led me into this issue.
Info:
Using version 2.3.9.164 on 7/26/24.
Run: http://192.168.1.9/hub/zwaveVersion
Get: VersionReport(zWaveLibraryType:7, zWaveProtocolVersion:7, zWaveProtocolSubVersion:14, firmware0Version:7, firmware0SubVersion:14, hardwareVersion:1, firmwareTargets:1, targetVersions:[[target:1, version:7, subVersion:18]])
Run: http://192.168.1.9/hub/advanced/installZipgateway718
Get: already running v7.18.3
When I try to update the FW, I just go in circles.... Press Firmware Update ... Press Update Firmware below to start update ...Press Update Firmware ==> Update Z-Wave radio firmware now? This may take 10-15 minutes.... Press Yes ... Failed to start ... Z-Wave Updater: ERROR. This firmware target is not upgradable. At this point I give up in frustration

Help!

Thanks!

You need to downgrade the gateway to 7.15 in order for the firmware update to work. Then update the gateway back to 7.18 when done.

Here are full instructions from staff:

Also abridged version is above in this thread:

OK. Since I was already way out beyond 2.3.8, I did the first section, "already been updated," steps. That worked as expected: http://192.168.1.9/hub/zwaveVersion returns:
VersionReport(zWaveLibraryType:7, zWaveProtocolVersion:7, zWaveProtocolSubVersion:18, firmware0Version:7, firmware0SubVersion:18, hardwareVersion:1, firmwareTargets:1, targetVersions:[[target:1, version:7, subVersion:18]])
Also, now there is no "Firmware Update" button on Z-wave Details page in Hubitat - Settings.
So it looks OK.
Then I double checked by running: http://192.168.1.9/hub/advanced/installZipgateway718 which returns: "success, please reboot". I expected to get something more like "you're already at 718."
Not sure now if all is OK. I'd appreciate your thoughts on this.

Yes looks like you are updated. You can run the zip gateway endpoint again and eventually you should get the message saying it is already updated.

Jeff,
Thanks for all your help.
