Woke Up to Z-Wave Network Offline

On C7 hub, version 2.3.8.133

  • 61 Z-Wave devices (58 Z-wave plus, 2 Z-wave (thermostats), 1 Z-wave lock (battery)...no ghosts
  • 35 Zigbee devices

I woke up this morning and no Z-wave devices were working:

  • Logged into Hub and had a "3" warnings
    ** Software update to 2.3.8.134 available
    ** Last cloud backup failed. Failed steps: Z-wave
    ** Z-Wave radio offline

The last cloud backup on 3/27 was a success according to the hub logs.

The last system restart was 3/23 when I updated to 2.3.8.133.

I shutdown the hub fully, and cycled power:

  • Hub rebooted normally
  • Z-wave network came back online
  • "Severe hub load" for approximately 10 minutes, then went back to normal

This is the first time anything like this has happened to me. Rebooting the hub solved the issue.

Has anyone seen something similar???


Please provide your hub model (C7, C8, etc.) and its platform version from Settings>Hub Details.

Widely known issue, although it happens a lot less often than it used to.

If the Zwave radio portion of a cloud backup fails it can knock out the Zwave radio requiring restart, as you saw.

As a workaround I changed my cloud backups to be less often, and do them only during hours I know I'll be available to restart the hub if needed.

No idea what the root issue is so can't comment on that. I know it is not # of Zwave devices related, though, as I have MANY more devices than you do and don't have this happen.

My yearly hub protect renewed on March 30 (between the two online backups)...coincidence I wonder?

I wonder if it is related to this Add-ons system maintenance

Interesting! This error happened to my C-7 last night, for the first time ever.

Dunno. I did a cloud backup last night with no issues though.
