Why did Inovelli make their button mapping so hard to be used in HE? At least it seems that way to me

From what I am seeing for the Red Series Dimmer, you have 5 button (pushed) and then you have 5 buttons (held). Besides the Button 6 & 7

But HE Rules doesn't recognize Tap Up ?x or Tap down ?x .
Only Pushed, Held, and Release.

In their Understanding Button Mapping.
If I Tap Up 1x on the dimmer it is considered "Button 1 PUSHED".
If I Tap Down 1x on the dimmer then that is considered "Button 1 Held".
Which "Held" does not have the same meaning in HE RM.

It would have been a lot easier if they went.
Button 1 = Tap UP 1x
Button 2 = Tap UP 2x
Button 2 = Tap Up 3x
Button 4 = Tap Up 4x
Button 5 = Tap Up 5x
Button 6 = Tap Down 1x
Button 7 = Tap Down 2x
Button 8 = Tap Down 3x
Button 9 = Tap Down 4x
Button 10 = Tap Down 5x
Button 11 = Hold Up 3 sec.
Button 12 = Hold Down 3 sec.
Button 13 = Tap Config 1x

Because then, HE RM would allow you to use Pushed, Held, and Release commands for each button listed.

If I try to create a Rule using the Red Series Dimmer were it doesn't power my Hue smart bulbs but only control them as a remote. Just to only turning On, Off, and be able to dim up or down and stop any time, I found it impossible.
And I, and I'm sure my family doesn't was 13 button presets to remember. lol

I can create a Rule were I can push the Top dimmer button 1x, PUSH button 1 (aka Tap 1x), and it will Set Lights to 100% over 3 seconds.
But if I want to create a Rule were now I want to push the Bottom dimmer button 1x, to turn the dimmer to 0%, I can't. Because "Button 1 " has already been used.

My goal was something like this:
(1) Tap the dimmer up 1x = Turn the smart bulbs to a 100%.
(2) Tap the dimmer down 1x = Turn the smart bulbs to 0%.
(3) Tap up 2x (HE rule world be pushed) = Start increasing dimmer level.
(4) Release (after tapping up 2x) = Stop dimmer level.
(5) Tap down 2x (HE rule world be pushed) = Start decreasing dimmer level.
(6) Release (after tapping down 2x)= Stop dimmer level.

This was all I was able to do...

Which I believe are still not correct....

Hopefully someone can clear this up for me and show me a better why in RM that I'm missing.

Thanks

Why don't you just use button controller or the button device in RM?

Ahh makes me so happy to have actual Keypads

I don't know that the inovelli red series can process a 2 click and hold. It can only process clicks 1-5 up or down, hold up or down, release up or down and the scene button click.

This seemed pretty well laid out in the documentation. Maybe @Eric_Inovelli can help out!

And now that I think about this the default behaivor of the dimmer would be hold and release to start dimming and stop dimming and 1 click for on and off...why would you need the two clicks and hold?

What @at9 said about button device

Use button device then RM will list all button available to use in RM where you can set up rules with.

Button #1 = Tap 1x Up for 100% brightness.
Button #2 = Tap 1x Down for 0% brightness

Button #3 would have to be a 2x Taps Up to start dimming up. and then some how to stop it from ramping.

I tried RM Button Devices and the is where I got stuck with what I'm wanting to do.

Button 1 push - on 100%
Button 1 held - 0% (off)
Button 8 push - start ramp up
Button 8 held - start ramp down
Button 6 push - stop level change
Button 6 held - stop level change

This should work with the newest drivers from inovelli

Look like you are trying to create a new RM for each button action?

Create only one RM and use button device then add a rule to each button in the same one RM.

I'll give it a try.

I tried that way because Button Device doe not have the option, "Release".

Button 6 push = release up
Button 6 held = release down
Button 8 push = hold up
Button 8 held = hold down

On mobile but let me know if these screenshots help!

I could be wrong but it is a dimmer switch and not a button switch.

So the held / release function is reserved for the physical switch button where you press the button to control the dim of the light that are hardwired to it.

Just to make sure I understand when you say Button 8, how many Taps is that?
Since Inovelli only list 6 buttons up and down, plus button 7.

Button 8 is you holding the paddle of the switch for about 1 second... button 6 is a release of the paddle after a button 8 situation

I must be doing something physically wrong. Tapping wrong or holding to long.

I can get this part just fine.
When I Tap Up 1x, the lights go to 100%
When I Tap Down 1x, they go to 0%

Just can't get the light to pause while their dimming up or down.

Here is how I have the button setup in Button Device in RM.

I know you listed "start ramp up" and "stop level change".
This is what I'm seeing with in Button Devices > Set Dimmer and Bulbs > Select Which Action......

Are you using Button Devices, just want to make sure we are on the same thing here. lol

This looks good. I would have to setup a test device to be sure. Which driver di you have on test dimmer?

Can you turn on the debug logging for the switch and screen shot the logs for a dim up and stop?

Something seem off. Probably me tonight.

No matter what buttons I tap or hold.

I only see this in the logs.
