What's with the "Open Weather" device?

Newbie Day #4.
With my initial software install, "Open Weather" came pre-installed as a device.

  1. Why should I care about the weather in my Hubitat system?
  2. I already have an Ecowitt based weather system using Cumulus software. Should I try to connect that with Hubitat?
  3. My best guess about weather information is that it has something to do with thermostats. However, I don't have a smart thermostat and if I do decide to get one, it will be at least 6 months from now.
  4. Should I just delete the Open Weather device?

I find it handy as I use it in WebCore to show forecasts on the Dashboards and to control my blinds. I change the degree of tilt to gather direct sun in the winter and delay on Evening close depending on sunset and Azimuth.
For current readings the Ecowitt is certainly better as there are no external update delays.

Lots of reasons. Here are some of mine:

  1. Selecting a thermostat mode and temperature range.
  2. Determining when the sprinkler systems run and for how long.
  3. Controlling a heater for my fish pond.
  4. Using wind speed to control a retractable awning.

There's a community integration that imports ecowitt data into Hubitat.

Sure. You can always add it later if you find there's a need for it.

I have my Ecowitt Weather station connected to Hubitat, and I use that info for anything that needs local weather. I also still run Open Weather for forecasts on my dashboard.

I use some CSS to scroll a custom weather foercast across the bottom of my dashboard, that combines my local Ecowitt sensor data with the Open Weather Data, since you can pull specific days of the forecast and write your own weather report.
