What do I need at Ikea?

I've got $400 in store credit at Ikea that is burning a hole in my pocket (as a result of my getting them to honor the warranty on two failed Fyrtur shades). I have no idea what to spend it on.

I can't sell it (not a gift card, but store credit). It seems that they have discontinued or are in the process of discontinuing all their smart home stuff, including Sonos speakers. Anything useful in smart home category that isn't marked "Last chance to buy"? The nearest store is 150 miles away, so browsing in store isn't an option.

Help me out here before I get desperate and order $400 worth of Swedish meatballs and chocolate bars.

Per a quick search IKEA is relaunching all of their smart home items in January 2026 to focus on Thread and Matter. Wait until January and see what pops up?

Well, there's the answer. I had heard about their relaunch, but prior research had found dates that had come and gone long ago, along with reports that IKEA had abandoned the idea. There were several things they said they would launch in 2024, but didn't. But it does now seem to be credible ...

It was a very quick search as I found it odd Ikea was abandoning the space. The information was provided by Gemini.

It did say they have terminated the agreement with Sonos and will be marketing more affordable Bluetooth speakers.

Since they missed so many other dates maybe this one is legitimate as it sounds like they are blowing out all of the old inventory.

Christmas shopping at IKEA Frankfurt...

Nice! Always fun to play with new gadgets! I wish we had an IKEA closer by. The closest one to me is about a 4 hour drive each way.

Have fun!

Fun shopping time.

Can you confirm if the new Ikea Matter devices are Matter over Thread or Matter over Wi-fi? Seemed like thread from some online content from third parties...

Matter over Thread.

Thanks!

Just looked at the dimensions of the motion sensor - it's small, 1 5/8", which is Iris v2 sized. Very nice. (They do actually mean side-to-side width, right?) Looking forward to your comments on these new devices. The prices are very tempting.

Just realized, I have an appointment today within 10m or less of our local Ikea.

I am going to be going shopping today as well. Daddy gets some new toys for Christmas! !

I look forward to your report. Still holding on to my cash credit.

The prices of the new IKEA Matter over Thread gadgets are honestly hard to beat — here in the EU, comparable products from other brands usually cost at least two or even three times more.

I’ll be able to share how these new toys actually work no earlier than Monday next week. Frankfurt, Germany is about 1,300 km away from where I live, so I’ll need a bit of patience… :slightly_smiling_face:

@HAL9000 - Waiting for more information? Maybe you're just not crazy-irrational spendy enough to fit in here.

@kkossev - the Bilresa buttons ($5.99!!) will be very helpful in my strategy to give my wife a button everywhere (loves buttons - only part of HA she seems to like). Also interested in the Klippbok (currently out of stock here, no delivery or in-store) to add a few additional "pants and suspenders" leak sensor duplicates in some spots.

Also, unforunately, the Myggspray looks like it's a lot larger than 1 5/8" across...cap below from a video about the new devices. Assuming the person's thumb is at least 3/4" to 1" across, the Myggspray looks like it's closer to 3" or more across. I'll confirm when I drop by Ikea later today. But def not tiny, probably partly due to using AAA or AA batteries, which is a plus.

No, I'm definitely that. There are a few hurdles. My hub is a C-7 but I do have a couple other devices that work as a Thread border router. Also, there isn't an IKEA store nearby, and those devices I've looked at aren't available for delivery without buying something that requires one of their trucks to come out.

But dang, some really good prices there. It may be time for a replacement of my sensors.

Just keep in mind that Matter over Thread works as a mesh network, much like Zigbee. That means you’ll want a few mains-powered Thread devices around, so they can act as routers and help extend and stabilize the network.

I just checked. There is exactly one in the Ikea 100 miles from me.

Ah .. good point. Would mains-powered devices that can serve as thread border routers (such as Apple TV, eero Pro 6E) automatically participate in a thread mesh?

Wondering about that very issue, glad you mentioned it.

For TBRs I've two homepods (one is in the garage to play music when I'm out there, so it's a little farther away from most devices) other homepod is in the living room (pretty central in the single floor house), and a Google Nest display in the family room (south end of the house). I think I'll be OK for Thread devices aside from some potential weakness in two front bedrooms, but we don't do much automation there and I can stick to Zigbee sensors in that area, which work fine.

Trying to be conscious about this mesh-mixing w/(primarily) sensors & plugs. I'm all set on mains powered switches/dimmers. Changing ratios of Zigbee, Matter/Wi-Fi, Matter/Thread causes me some concern about creating a new problem and weakening my Zigbee mesh by replacing Zigbee sensors/plugs w/Matter devices.

Yes, they should, but there are differences in how TBR devices play together depending on which release of the Matter spec they have. I think it requires Matter version 1.4 or higher to share the Thread mesh between the TBRs. @kkossev - that right?

Why are you sitting here typing when you could be on the road!?!
