Weather Data Tile Using OpenWeatherMap

Hello Everyone,

I would like some help figuring out where to find an ezDashboard virtual device ? (not sure that is what it would be) that displays the weather data points from OpenWeatherMap in a single tile or how to do it.

While browsing through some threads yesterday I came across some great information on weather data on dashboards.

I opted to install OpenWeatherMap, registered an account, configured the API key and all that good stuff. I can see the weather datapoints in the virtual device I created afterwards.

I am only capable of adding the generic tiles to the dashboard like the one below (not able to code scripts, etc.) The instructions throughout the threads were very helpful on getting OpenWeatherMap setup but I just can't figure out from the threads how to get a custom ezDashboard tile setup using the weathermap data using graphics, colors, and icons pictures. Just way over my head (I think).

What I would love would be some help with being able to add a single tile like the really nice one below that I saw from rlithgow1 in a previous thread (or something with similar functionality including 7 day forecast.

Are there devices available with these configurations already put together somewhere?

Any guidance as always would be very much appreciated!

Don

My 5day forcast is a web image from WPXI pittsburgh. If you can bring up similar to you just create an image tile with that url. The url I use is http://mediaweb.wpxi.com/weather/5day.jpg

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. Are you kicking adding the url inside the tile and somehow updating it on some regular interval via rule machine?

Thanks,
Don

I think the better question would have been what type of tile has a place for a url?

The url above is updated everyday automatically by WPXI. Create a virtual image device, add the url to the image you want. Then add that device to the dashboard. Here is my test weather dash. I don't do much with it honestly. Note: Both weather maps are animated.

Thank you so much! Enjoy the evening!!

Good morning Rick,

After looking around on the web I found the below graphic which is exactly what I was looking for. It has the same functionality as the one I saw from you. I was also able to find the virtual link driver for web URLs and am now able to add the virtual driver to the ezDashboard.

Wow, yesterday it seemed to be a pretty daunting task not even knowing where to start but today I am there thanks again to you.

The only question I have remaining is if there is a way to have the link resolve when the dashboard opens and have the graphic open without the need to click on the tile. Currently I have to click on the ellipsis in the upper-right corner of the tile for the graphic to display. Not a big deal by any means.

Any thoughts on this? Either way I am very pleased with with the current results and appreciate your guidance getting me here. Opens a whole new world for me using web links lol.

Don

I would think if it changes daily,m it would change when you go to the dashboard. For instance I have a video feed in my tile and it's being refreshed every 1 second. I would set the refresh in the virtual image to refresh every 12 hours just so it's up to date (43200 seconds)

Thank you. I will make the change now. When you open your dashboard does the image render and show immediately or do you have to click on the ellipsis? Initially all I get is a small graphic icon.

It updates immediately.

You can make the tile bigger.

I enlarged it to almost the full size of the screen. No luck. here are the parameters of the virtual device. If you wouldn't mind taking a look to see if there are any obvious mis-configurations I would appreciate your expertise. If I define it as a link and click on the ellipsis it will launch into a separate window which is nice but would like to have a screen open directly on the dashboard but am very please with your help getting me this far already.

your image url doesn't have an image, it's a web site. You need to have it end in a valid image file (lets call it \baltimore\5day.jpg)

Awh. Now I think I get it. Somehow I have to capture that screen every so often, saving it as an image and displaying it on the dashboard. Is that correct? If that is the case any programs to do that? I will not bother you any longer :-).

Thank you again!
Don

No, you need to link directly to the image itself. In my example, my weather image is
"http://mediaweb.wpxi.com/weather/5day.jpg"

They change it daily.

note the actual pic is 5day.jpg

Thank you. I will look at the site tomorrow and get that graphic name. Appreciate it!!

Good morning Rick. Wanted to follow up and show you the end result of your help. Very please and again thank you! Making more use of links now as well. See screenshots of the top of two dashboard layouts below. One is of a desktop layout, The other is that of an iPad layout.

Dashboard:

iPad:

3rd Party Weather Provider:

I also decided to add the "System Services"; which are various configurations of the virtual hub driver that you provided to the iPad layout. Again, a BIG thank you!!

There are one set of these virtual drivers, initially configured for the desktop layout. Worked perfectly. I added these same virtual drivers to the iPad layout. It appears only a few of the drivers are reporting data on the iPad yet are reporting all data on the Desktop. See the iPad vs. the desktop screens. I first thought that possibly enough time has not lapsed for the times to expire but no longer believe that to be the case. I say this because the latest firmware update was not reported on the iPad desktop.

Any thoughts?

Always appreciate you!

Don

Your 5 day weather forecast is just a link instead of an image tile... What weather driver are you using. I really would recommend the Wunderground device.

I will definitely look into it. It will be a few days. Will be traveling.

Also, I need to direct the question about the hub information tiles to thebearmay.

Hope you enjoy the weekend! - Don

Good morning Rick,

I added the Wunderground driver [screenshot below]. After doing so I don't see it in the list of devices to add to the dashboard. I opened the driver and re-save it thinking that may help and also re-booted the hub but but no luck. I also looked at the contents of the driver for any additional instructions. Nothing there. Any ideas on what I may be doing wrong?

Thanks - Don

Did you refresh your dashboard after you added it to the dashboard app? I always forget that part.
