Unable to pair new Frient Smoke Alarm

I have a Hubitat C-7, running platform version 2.4.0.151, and am trying to pair a new Frient Zigbee Smoke Alarm (SMSZB-120).

When I put the alarm in pairing mode and start pairing on the hub it comes up with "Found a Zigbee device, initializing..." within a second or so, but never progresses beyond that point; the hub eventually times out with a "try a factory reset" message.

I've tried resetting the alarm, and rebooting the hub, and neither changed the behaviour.

FWIW a new Hue motion sensor that arrived at the same time paired without issue, so there's no fundamental problem with the hub.

Can anyone suggest anything else to try?

Edit: Tagging @AABfrient in case this is of relevance to them.

An update to this...following the problems summarised in the original post  I returned the smoke alarm and got a replacement from the same supplier (Amazon UK).

Unfortunately this gave the exact same behaviour - a prompt "Found a Zigbee device, initializing...", but no progress beyond that point. All the steps listed above were also tried with the replacement.

For a generic device I'd shrug and pass this off as not compatible (probably with some muttering about funny Tuya Zigbee), but as the Frient alarm is listed on the official List of Compatible Devices I thought this might worth raising with someone on the support side (@bobbyD). It's looking like it may not be compatible at the moment.

If there are any tests/alternative pairing approaches you'd like me to try, please let me know.

Try the Double Luck voodoo.

I have a Frient Heat Alarm and the above workaround worked for me on a C-8 hub.

For C-7 hubs the workaround is to pair the problematic Zigbee 3.0 devices close to the hub, immediately after rebooting the C-7.

Thanks - I'll give that a go this evening!

(Pairing with the alarm close to the hub was tried, but without any reboot in the mix)

Prepare the Frient alarm in advance (reset it - the reset procedure was different from the pairing procedure).

Then try pairing ASAP after rebooting the hub - as soon as the C-7 web UI becomes responsive.

Thanks for the suggestion, but unfortunately after multiple attempts over two evenings to get the alarm paired after a hub reboot there's been no success. :slightly_frowning_face:

Trying "Double Luck voodoo" fell before the first hurdle - there doesn't seem to be a "Rebuild Network" button on the Zigbee settings page. Possibly removed in the recent UI update?

I think I'll have to send the second alarm back too (it's rather overpriced to keep for use as an essentially dumb alarm)

The C-7 models do not have a 'Rebuilt Network' button on the Zigbee Settings page.
What worked for me was to pair the problematic Zigbee 3.0 device immediately after the C-7 hub was rebooted.

Ah, that'd explain that, then!

For whatever reason (my not getting timings right, undocumented alarm hard/firmware changes, phase of the moon, ...) no joy for me, I'm afraid. :man_shrugging:

If nothing else it might be worth Hubitat updating their "compatible devices" list - at present this reproduces the alarm's instructions for pairing (the usual "hub in pairing mode, press device button, wait, job done") and as things stand it looks like significantly more than this is needed to have any chance of success. Actually I have some new samples from Frient and am having issues jointing the as well…
I’ll be talking to frient about this as the device isn’t behaving like other frient devices

This is the device that I have (using the 'frient Smoke/Heat Alarm' inbuilt driver) :

Hi Mike - we're a few months on, so just checking whether there've been any developments regarding those Frient joining issues?

waiting for them to issue a firmware update.

Thanks for the update.

Was researching heat alarms for Hubitat, and found the Frient device. Wanted to add fire detection for our attached garage. Have you had any issues with yours since getting it? Was debating hunting one down, but they don't seem to be available on the US market. Thanks!

Maybe see if wired heat detectors like a first alert will work with a zen55.

Interesting, I'll definitely look into that. Hardwired would be way better for my scenario, as we have pretty brutal winters, and a battery blpowered device would drain batteries extremely quick.

Unfortunately it looks like the Zooz won't work. It doesn't send out a specific signal for a heat alarm event. This was the response I got back from TheSmartestHouse.

Anyone else have any luck with a Frient heat alarm?

My Frient Heat Alarm is working very stable paired to a C-8 (non-Pro) hub. Never disconnected, but pairing was difficult...`

Using the inbuilt driver, it reports regularly the temperature and the battery level

If your hub is the old C-7 model, try pairing the Frient device immediately after rebooting the hub. Pair as soon as the C-7 web UI becomes responsive after the reboot.

I appreciate the info. Have you tested the heat alarm function at all? Found a distributor that ships to the US, I think I'll give that a go.

To me that reads like it works. If you know it's alarming smoke and heat for you in that use case is the same. I treat heat alarm and smoke the same. They are both an emergency and hvac is shut off.
