Ubiquiti router recommendation

That's very cool thanks! So am hopeful this will not require any extra cloud services to run?

I installed one of these last week. Works great. Painted it to match my house. Would have bought a wifi 6 one if available, but it wasn't, and I don't feel so strongly about it that I wanted to wait.

I just ordered one of the WiFi 6 Mesh (soda can) access points. Did not get a notice for it but caught it in stock during my random checks.

Now I just need to figure out the best spot. I used to have an exterior Ethernet jack but the cable leading to it got damaged during some remodeling, so it is useless. One of these days I will add two outlets using the GFCI it was next to.

Debating about just running some direct burial cat6a out to the shed or a post in the yard...

Only works on mobile devices. No official desktop client. It looks like some people run it via Android emulator.

I mounted my older version of the AP (FlexHD) outside to my weather station pole, had to run underground ethernet cable and put a surge protector on it just to be careful. The new Mesh AP's are working great indoors.

Well, looks like Ubiquiti has finally updated their website with a new price for the UniFi Dream Router. It jumped from $79 to $199, which is still a very good price, IMHO. Now if they could just get some inventory to sell…

Sold out in less than 5 minutes after being released yesterday.

How many are listed on eBay already?

EDIT:
Decided to check myself... At this very moment (6:15pm on April 27, 2022) it appears there were 6 of them, all listed for ~$400.

People are the worst. And most companies selling limited availability hardware don't seem to give a crap if they all go to scalpers. Sad state of affairs.

I am still waiting for a 24 port POE switch and looking at the state of inventory.... I don't think I can ever get one at regular price.

I actually emailed Ubiquiti a few weeks ago about how many listings I found on eBay for Early Access equipment... Pretty sure they do not want scalpers buying those. Did not get any response but I did not expect one.

I snagged one last week, going to use it in our summer place (a UDM Pro would be massive overkill there).

There's a Discord channel you can subscribe to that notifies you when Ubiquity products are back in stock. You have to be very quick though. First time I got an in-stock notice I added it to my cart and by the time I had entered credit card info the order was cancelled because no stock was left. Sometimes the in-stock and out-of-stock notices on Discord are literally seconds apart. I finally got lucky last week.

Congratulations! Looks like a very nice package for $199. I have the original UDM base model, and it is still going strong. I am very pleased with my UniFi networking hardware.

Ubiquiti's product stock has been all over the place lately, mostly non existent, so I initially decided to go with a TP-Link Omada setup. The controller software is essentially a clone of older Unifi. I had the TP-Link setup in place for barely 3 weeks. I run Uptime Kuma to monitor my home network, connection to the internet, etc. With the TP-Link setup, I'd get multiple alerts, almost nightly, that my internet connection dropped or that the hardware controller was offline. Needless to say, I wasn't pleased as I never had an internet connection drop with the Verizon G1100 router I was using previously. The TP-Link setup needed to go.

I got lucky and managed to snag a Dream Machine Pro, Switch Lite 16 PoE, Switch Lite 8 PoE, a pair of Access Point FlexHD access points, and 2 Camera G3 Instant. I've had this setup in place for about a month and have had zero alerts with regard to nightly internet connection drops. WiFi throughout the house has been 100% stable with a strong signal and throughput on each floor. The build quality of each product is top notch. At work, I deal with Cisco products all day and I must admit that I was never a fan of Ubiquiti until now.

A bunch of items went back in stock last night and I managed to snag 3 Access Point WiFi 6 Mesh. 2 will be replacing the existing Flex HDs and the 3rd will be added in my basement. I tried to snag another G3 Instant camera, but there is a 2 per customer maximum and I don't feel like creating/maintaining another account.

All-in-all, I'm very impressed with my Ubiquiti setup and will likely add to it as time goes on.

About 9 months ago I replaced my Linksys Velop network, which I recommend folks stay away from entirely. I went the Unifi route after seeking advice from folks here and the network team at work (which reports to me, fortunately). I don't think any of our network folks would be a fan of using Unifi in the enterprise but a lot of them use it for their own networks. So seems like the sweet spot is SOHO to medium sized businesses rather than enterprise scale.

I have yet to actually be able to get a camera but at some point that's the route I'll go.

Can the WiFi 6 mesh APs act as a bridge that I can plug a switch into?

Like the latest? Access Point WiFi 6 Mesh – Ubiquiti Inc.

I cannot imagine so since it relies on the PoE Ethernet for power and data.

Normal bridge devices are much cheaper anyways.

The UAC Pros had 2 ethernet ports so you could do this. The newer WiFi 6 stuff not so much. Seems like an inefficient way to do it anyway... maybe look into powerline adapters or MoCA if you have pre-existing coax.

The orbi’s I currently use have 5 port switches on all the satellites. I’m wanting to replace them. This thread indicates that it might work but isn’t technically supported.

I don't have any wifi 6 APs, but I do have one of these and it works just like you described: Access Point AC Mesh - Ubiquiti Store United States

I have it connected to a PoE switch in a closet. The mesh AP does a wireless uplink to one of my other APs, and the other devices on the same switch as the mesh AP get networked in. YMMV.
