FWIW, I bought a number of G3 Pros on ebay of all places, and have found Ubiquiti to be awesome when they failed. No questions just a straight up replacement.
I love the cameras. I have 4 G3 Pros, a G3 Flex and a Doorbell. I run the 4 G3 Pros on Flex switch mounted in the attic of my garage, with the cameras mounted under the eaves.
Don't know about any particular item, but one thing I can tell is not to rely on getting an email when something comes back in stock. There were three different items I was interested in, and in some wierd bout of temporary OCD, I checked their store every couple of hours for about two weeks. Eventually all the items showed up as in-stock and my orders went through. I never received a single in-stock email for any of them.
Apparently, demand is such that when things become available, they quickly sell out again.
I can't see much difference between the PRO and the SE... except the SE's switch is PoE and the Pro's switch is not... did you see anything else that distinguished the two?
The SE has a 2.5g WAN port whereas the PRO only has a 1g WAN port. I don't anticipate having (or really needing) an internet connection faster than 1g anytime soon though. My main interest was the POE ports. If/when I install any Ubiquiti cameras, I'll need to get a POE switch. For now, I just bought a 2-port POE injector for the APs.
I just hate it when a newer version of something is released right after I purchase the current (now older) version. Happens every time.
I missed the difference in WAN port speed... not an issue for most folks in a residential installation (for a while anyway). The PoE switch is certainly nice to have. I ended up adding a 24 port PoE switch as a distribution switch to power all my APs as well as all of my hubs. But I would have needed more than 8 PoE ports anyway so...
I get you about the new version thing but hey that's just the way it is
That is an odd one. I would imagine the app just does a broadcast and looks for any Hubitats that respond... Be interesting to see what the Ubiquiti folks end up saying (if it ever becomes public).
Curious what racks folks with UDM Pros are using. The tool less Unifi one looks nice but seems to be always out of stock. Thinking of further going deeper down the Unifi rabbit hole by purchasing a UDM Pro SE - currently have Unifi APs only.
Also POE noob question with the switches, I have several 802.3af POE splitters and most Unifi switches have 802.3at PoE+ ports, will they still work with the additional wattage or is there a configuration I can reduce the wattage in Unifi Controller? Also I assume I can turn off POE completely per port right?
Rack is totally personal preference, how many U do you have, doors/windows/DIY... many options there and huge varieties in pricing. I have what was actually intended to be an AV rack, panels on 3 sides and a glass door on the front, big fans on top, plenty of spots for cabling. The only real problem is there is not a huge amount of space between the door and the front of the devices so my fiber optic cables are probably near their limit for bending. I put WADWAZ sensors on it also so my Hubitat knows which panel/door is open in case I left one off.
You can use lower power PoE devices without issue, but Unifi does not have a spot to control wattage provided that I have found. You can definitely turn off the PoE per port though. Even using their API.
In addition not all Unifi PoE switches are created equal. The max power output varies a lot, with their pro series switches (not surprisingly) having larger power supplies.
I use a 6U rack for the UDM pro, a 24 port pro switch, a keyboard/laptp drawer (which is useless at the height I have it), a 1U UPS, and some cable management. I have no idea why the AMZ description says 4U instead of 6. My riser cabling is all cat6A so I needed some extra cable management space, and obviously I am not using the switch bult into the UDM for anything except a management laptop. I'm also using SFPs for uplink between the UDM and the distribution switch.
You can actually go without a case version if you want, depending on location. I started off with a small DIY rack consisting of a wood shelf and a couple 1x2s as the rack bars (holes drilled for the various devices).
Then I bought a 42U floor standing open rack. TONS of space but when a coworker said they were getting rid of an unused 27U AV rack, I felt it would help keep things cleaner and safer.
Here is a small picture of how it has turned out... I need to do more cleaning because the new switch was just put in this weekend.
I still have the old 48port Gigabit PoE switch in there (an old Brocade FCX 648S-HPOE, but it still works fine) that I need to take out. You can see my backup Netgear switch down on top of a server (it is a rackmount, but WAY too long for this case). Couple drawers, shelves, UPSes (the Belkin is a 12v battery backup that handles the cable modem), and there is some more stuff sitting on top of it also.
My PTSD just kicked in. I spent a sleepless couple of months a few years ago overseeing a rush migration from Brocade LBs to F5 as our infrastructure slowly died because of those Brocades. "Brocade" still causes shivers down my spine.
I’m thinking about updating to the dream machine pro to get more performance and features. Currently I have an Orbi mesh system and firewalla blue. Initially I’d keep the Orbi system and put it in AP mode. Probably sell the firewalla. Any issues with that plan? Will the dream machine replace the firewalla and router capabilities of the Orbi without any gaps?
Thanks everyone! I just bought the UDM SE along with the Switch 24 PoE - I couldn't justify paying double for the Pro given I don't have a ton of POE anyway and I can always use the ports on the SE.
Another question, the UDB SE has 10G SFP+ while the Switch 24 POE has a 1G SFP. Will a SFP+ cable work with the 1GB? I read they are the same size but would I just set the UDM port to 1GB? Or do I need a different cable all together? Plan on buying that via Amazon.
yes but if it is like the Pro model.... you will need to adjust the port speed of the spf+ port on the SE from auto negotiate to the speed of the port of the switch... so 1 gig.
That tripped me up for a bit with the Pro.. I plugged in the switch and nothing happened... no connection. Then found out I needed to adjust
