Ubiquiti router recommendation

I've been lazy power wise, auto has seemed fine. If you had multiple APs and wanted clients to roam between APs, a lower transmit power is generally recommended. I would recommend increasing your 5Ghz width to 80, you're not going to get full speeds out of the AP set to 40 (and is generally the recommendation I've seen). Unless you are living in a rural area with no interference, I'd also recommend doing an RF scan from the AP and explicitly pick channels with the least interference vs leaving it on auto.

How about this setting... seems to make a pretty significant difference for me.

I don’t personally have that enabled, so I can’t speak to it. I have seen some negative comments about it before, but don’t know if there have been improvements. I’d worry that if 5ghz coverage isn’t great, you could end up having some devices drop off.

I tend to keep away from AI and other advanced features where the devices get forced into one thing or another. When it works it works great but when it doesn't.... :exploding_head:

Thanks for the reminder - I had my NanoHD set to VHT80 as well.

Not rural, no goats or pigs. :wink: Next door neighbors house on one side is about 40' away, on other side they are up a 30' hill from us and set back, so pretty far away. I do see neighboring Wi-Fi networks when I do a scan but they are very weak by the time they get to me. I'm going to do a scan and se what it reveals. Haven't done that in a while.

IRRC I had hear mixed results from folks in the Unifi forums using that setting, but have to admit I never tried it.

I did try some quick speed tests in the corners of the house where I was having issues and the issues are gone. Connection seems to be solid, and disconnects not happening. Will need to see how it goes for a bit, but so far looks very good.

I may put the NanoHD in the garage so I have a very strong connection out there when I'm working on stuff. Don't really need it, but since I have the AP I might as well put it to work! :slight_smile:

Pretty happy so far. And of course I updated to the 5.60.13 Beta FW. :smiley:

I just got mine too and yes much bigger. Smaller is a UAP-AC-Lite

I have my two new U6-LR's installed. Simple setup considering I unplugged in the UAP-AC-Lite's and put the U6-LR's in the same spot. I have a U shaped house and have these near the end of each part of the U. All the configurations automagically moved over. Only issue is the firmware update has failed, tried several times via controller software running as a docker container on my NAS. I have never had that issue with the AC-Lite's. Will try again over the weekend,

I disabled my Asus Wifi to see how things work for the next few days. Will continue to use the Asus as primary router, firewall, and VPN server until I decide to take a further plunge into Unifi. Though likely wait for the UDR to come out and determine next steps.

This community is awesome and I appreciate everyone's willingness to help on many topics like this.

Yes! Even though I thought I was prepared for it from seeing it in the video, when it arrived the box was so heavy and the AP felt like a monster frisbee in hand. The frisbee that ate NY City. :slight_smile:

Luckily it does not look crazy big at all once installed on the ceiling. I've already forgotten about it and don't notice it at all, and I don't think my wife will ever notice or care. Nice!

I used an excellent set of controller install scripts from the Unifi forum to install and update the controller on one of my RPIs and it has worked flawlessly from there. If you end up having an issue w/running the controller on your NAS/Docker, and have a Pi sitting around, you could try below. To move over you would just back up your controller config from the NAS controller instance and import it into the controller installed on the Pi.

Awesome thanks. I’ve been running the controller on my NAS for 4 or so years and haven’t had any troubles so far. I do update it from time to time with the latest version. It informed me there were new updates for the APs and both failed to deploy. I will try again tomorrow.

The APs do require a minimum version of the controller...mentioned on the product page in the UI store.

Size and the number of simultaneously blinking LEDs... both are important.

I tried it. I found sometimes it worked great and sometimes it produced instability in the connection. But once my APs are fully deployed I might try it again.

The interesting part of this is that @lewis.heidrick and his family actually live in a 16 x 20 trailer. But the kids can get Wi-Fi at their school four miles away. '

Question for folks who have been running this stuff for a while. I went around yesterday and moved a bunch of wireless devices off my old Linksys crap to my new IoT wireless network / VLAN. As I was doing it, I checked to make sure each device showed up, and I gave it an alias that allowed me to readily identify it. This morning a bunch of those devices are no longer visible in the clients tab but are perfectly functional. Weird... it appears as though the console thinks they are inactive though they definitely are not.

If they are phones (and maybe some tablets) you have to set off the MAC randomization.. so that could be one thing.

Yeah this is mostly Amazon Echo devices... but those are the only ones I moved.
