Twilio Registration

Pineview, Thanks for confirming, glad your sharing what twilio is telling you. So far, I'm using toll free without issue. I read that your only going to get filtered or blocked if you go over 2000 messages a month. I doubt I do more then 500 and it's only to 2 numbers on one telco (Verizon).

Symionow, I updated my two prior posts on Local Number A2P 10DLC registration and Toll-Free Number 'Verification' with most recent info from Twilio. They told me verification for toll-free numbers is free but limited to those with a registered business name. I'm currently using an 'un-verified' toll-free number and as of today my Hubitat/Twilio sms notifications are still working. I questioned Twilio support about this and their official response was that un-verified toll-free numbers will at some point be filtered and blocked. Different cell carriers may adopt restrictions at different times but even low volume users like ourselves will eventually start experiencing this filtering. They emphasized to use a local number registered for A2P 10DLC Sole Proprietor Campaign to be certain our sms alerts continue to work reliably. Given my main use for Hubitat sms alerts are for critical home safety events like smoke/fire, carbon monoxide, water leaks, and basement sump pump I will likely purchase a local number from Twilio and register for A2P 10DLC on April 17th to play it safe. It will be interesting to see when and if filtering occurs for unverified toll-free numbers. I may keep my toll-free for a few months to test and see lol. Thanks again for sharing your findings and please keep me updated if things change on your end.

Let me know if you can register as I tried this morning and the option is grayed out.

Albertjmulder, I also tried registering my local number at Twilio for A2P 10DLC Sole Proprietor today around 12 noon here in Michigan. I encountered the same identical problem that you did. I opened a support ticket with Twilio for this issue. I will post here when I get a reply from them and/or anything else changes. Please do the same, thanks.

I finally got past that area, but now its just other issues. And keeps making me go in loops of info and then wants tax number and business name and website and business email (Cant be a throw away email address (AKA gmail ect..) Driving me nuts

I also have opened up a ticket with them.

I too am now able to start the process. Twilio told me it didn't go live until 9 am PDT, 12 noon my time. I wasn't even sure what to select from the 'Vertical' pull down menu on the first page. All of those choices are for business, education, etc. After reading the problems you encountered I decided to wait for more advice from Twilio before going any further. Supposedly for business name you use your first and last name. What worries me is if tax ID #, business web site, and business domain email address are requirements. I only use Gmail for all of my email addresses. This contradicts all of the information Twilio support has provided me over the past week. This is extremely confusing and frustrating to say the least.

I'm not sure what I did but I think I was able to convert my original starter registration to Sole Proprietor! The end message I got was that the campaign would be reviewed and there was a delay of about 2-3 weeks. In the meantime, I could continue to use my existing process (and I know it's still working).

Very confusing :man_shrugging:t2:

Rakeshg, I'm crossing my fingers for you and myself. :crossed_fingers:  I just finished registering my local number on Twilio. Now begins the 2 to 6 week (possibly longer) wait  to find out if our campaign has been approved. For the most part I found the template to be fairly straight forward. I was careful what I entered for 'Campaign Description' and 'Sample Messages 1 and 2' as the reviewers supposedly look for consistency here. For 'How Do End-Users Consent to Receive Messages' I essentially entered "In-Person face to face, we live in the same home". :crossed_fingers: For now I continue to use my (unverified) toll-free without issue and have sent a few test messages with my un-registered local without issue.

So, I now know what it feels like to unwrap a chocolate bar and find Wonka's Golden Ticket!

Kahn-hubitat, curious if you're still using SMS alerts in HE then which A2P service are you now using and what driver?

My own sendmail implementation

I considered doing the same when beginning my ST to HE migration. So I assume you're using cell carrier email-to-sms, or just email for alerts? I get a LOT more email than SMS so I pay more attention to SMS as it's usually family, close friends, and priority ie bank & credit usage. Push-alert notifications are unreliable on my ph so I wanted to continue using SMS (spoiled by ST, only thing I will miss). When sending test messages to my carrier email-to-sms I had delays of 20 seconds to over a minute and some failed. So, response time and reliability lead me to Twilio. Despite the 10DLC registration circus every SMS alert sent is received in 3 to 4 seconds. Hate that I now pay for sms alerts but for me it's peace of mind for under $5/month. With that said I may rethink everything based on 10DLC registration results! lol

Curious to know how you setup Hubitat and Twilio to send phone/voice calls? How do you program the voice message? How do those costs compare to sending SMS? Thanks.

Yes send to my own local email server that forwards to att email to sms gateway.

You have to create a script in the Twillio account itself. there's somewhere on this forum that details how to do it and even has a sample to copy and paste in. Then in HE it just becomes another speech device. The cost is slightly more but still just a couple cents per minute if I remember right.

Very interesting, thanks! I'll research it more. How long have you been using it and what is typical response time from HE trigger to phone ringing? Advantage over SMS is that it would work with old school POTS home landlines. The only downside would be if the call goes unanswered and without voicemail (ie cell ph no signal or ringer turned off), unless there is 'retry call until answered'. For critical safety alarms a combo of SMS and phone call would cover all bases. Thanks again! :+1:

I’ve been using it for probably a year or more. Very rarely trigger it but if memory serves correctly it’s very fast. Not sure what happens if no answer. Mine have always been to cell phone which has voice mail.

Just tested it and the call came through in about 2 seconds.

That's fast, about the same as Twilio SMS. Once the dust settles with my ST to HE migration I will give it a try. Thanks for all the info, much appreciated!

I just went in and looked at my billing for April and it appears that they have charged for the "Campaign Vetting" and "Brand Registration" ($19). I haven't received any confirmation whether it's been approved or not, so wondering if you have any insight into what the heck may be going on?

I just checked my Twilio account and so far they've only billed me the $4 for Brand Registration which if I recall correctly was charged the day I registered. I'm not 100% certain but I believe the Campaign Vetting fee is billed whether it's approved or not. I would have to go through all of my emails but I'm consumed at the moment working on some z-wave signal issues and antenna mods, sorry. Did you go to Messaging > Regulatory Compliance > Campaigns and check status? Mine is still 'In Progress' but maybe your campaign was approved already, hence the charge?
