I have a couple of Tuya Zigbee socket/ switches working as "Generic Zigbee Switches", but I want to access the power measuring feature. I am not fussed about it being on Hubitat, but the Tuya App says that "No Gateway available" and gives option to " Configure Gateway" - presumably Hubitat.
How do I do that?
Hi David, welcome to Hubitat community forum.
Typically, Tuya-based devices energy monitoring is not supported natively by Hubitat inbuilt generic drivers, as Tuya uses non-standard Zigbee clusters and commands.
You can try however this community driver : Tuya Zigbee Metering Plug.
Hopefully, you can get the Tuya plugs to report power after switching to the community driver. If not, pick up a couple of Third Reality Gen2 power monitoring smartplugs. They work well with the community driver available in Hubitat Package Manager.
I still have some Tuya plugs, but several have failed. I am now using the Third Reality devices instead and have found them to be more reliable.
My thanks to kkossev and rwclements228.
I only want very infrequent access to the power measuring facility and implementation of the driver is probably beyond my capabilities.
I eventually found the Third Reality devices on Amazon.es but they get very poor ratings.
I am trying to use Zigbee wherever possible, but I think, in this instance, I will opt for the simpler power measuring switch using WiFi rather than Zigbee
If you already are using a Hubitat Elevation hub, you will find that it supports most Zigbee and Z-wave devices far better than most WiFi devices. However, there are some WiFi devices that are supported. For example TP-Link Kasa outlets are supported using the Matter protocol.
Please do not be intimidated by the thought of having to install a community supported driver with devices like the Third Reality plugs. While the driver is not built-in to the hubitat firmware, it is easily installed using the Hubitat Package Manager.
If you do not already know how to use Hubitat Package manager, you are missing a superb tool. Initial installation of the manager does involve a few steps, but it is not really difficult. Here is the detailed procedure here:
Here is a useful video tutorial.
Once you have the package manager installed (often referenced as HPM), you can use it to install and update a variety of useful tools including community drivers.
The Third Reality community driver is found in HPM as "Third Reality Zigbee Drivers". I wonder if the poor reviews on Amazon for the Third Reality plugs were due to the lack of the right driver. With the right driver, they are excellent.
