[SOLVED] Help with Thermostat Tile

Hi,

I'm new here and I am going a little nuts. I just did the ecobee integration step by step. When I view my dashboard all I can see is my ecobee temp. I went and added the custom option for heat and it looks like I did everything correctly. However, I can't seem to add this functionality to my dashboard (I still just see the temp). I feel like the ecobee integration would more robust than just showing the temp (i.e. be able to change the temp, etc.) I would appreciate any help b/c I have spend hours on this and can't make any progress.

Thank you,

Remember that you can DISPLAY pretty much anything on the dashboard by picking the ATTRIBUTE template for a tile.

There isn't much you can CONTROL on a thermostat from the dashboard, though, as there is no thermostat dashboard template yet. Well, that is without doing some interesting (I would argue kludgy) workarounds using buttons/virtual devices that others have posted on the forum.

You can control the thermostat from SharpTools.io, though. Granted that is not a local option, nor free for much longer.

Thank you, that helps a lot.

As another newb I am finding that HE really is about automation and multiple devices triggering other actions or devices. It does add control of the thermostat but only in the device section. I think the purpose of t-stat integration at this point is more to use it as a trigger for another device or for a rule based on temperature...IMHO.

I would agree. It's main strength in HE is using the data in an RM rule or user created app.

Although, if SharpTools (cloud based) is OK, their thermostat tile works perfectly with the built-in Ecobee integration.

That isn't OK for everyone though, I'm just providing an alternative. And I don't work for SharpTools, I'm just a user.

The other alternative, like I mentioned, it to make some virtual devices and hack a way to do it in dashboard. seems to work for others, keeps control local, and is free (in money, not time ).

Fantastic feedback, thank you! Actually working with SparpTools now and Ecobee is up and running just as I wanted.

Note that if you are using the built-in HE Ecobee integration, there seems to be a bug that the operating mode is reported as AUTO instead of IDLE. It doesn't seem to really hurt anything, but it annoys some people.

Hopefully they will fix that someday... @bravenel

There are some other side-effects and nuances of the built-in Ecobee driver. For example, some people have mentioned that the reported thermostatSetpoint is the average of the heating and cooling setpoints which is what is displayed on the single-height thermostat layout.

A simple workaround is to change to the double height thermostat layout which displays the heating and cooling setpoints individually.

To change the thermostat tile layout in SharpTools.io:

  1. While editing a dashboard, tap the ... in the top-right corner of your desired tile
  2. Tap the Change Layout option
  3. Tap the Double Height Thermostat layout option
  4. Save your dashboard by tapping the orange save icon in the bottom-right corner of the page

Interesting!

I never noticed that, as I always use the double height layout. Thanks @josh!
