Removeable Double sided tape?

Is there a good quality removeable double sided tape that is thin?

Use case: I have a number of slim strip type door sensors (like the Sensative strips). They come with terrific adhesive that really secures them, so there are no false alarms, which is great. What is not so great is that their batteries only last 3 or 4 years, and then the device needs replacement. Removing the strip is relatively easy, but it leaves a fairly thick layer of adhesive on the door, which then takes an hour or more to remove (even with rubbing alcohol), and it must be removed before the new strip is applied. I'm sick of this and it's even more unpleasant when it is cold out.

I have these in the two locations that surface mounted sensors won't pass HAF. Recessed sensors will void the door warranty. So I'm stuck with these slim strip sensors.

Considered Locktite putty, but I'm concerned it is not secure enough; if the sensor falls while the system is armed, the siren goes off and all h--- breaks loose.

Considered velcro, but even ultra thin adds at least 1/16", which is too thick.

Considered 3m command tape, but even that is 1.1 mm thick (it's a thin foam).

Is there any thin 2x sided tape that sticks, but also removes without leaving such a residue mess?

I use this very thin and narrow double-sided tape, thickness: 0.2mm, Length: 25M (82ft)

3M VHB tapes are a little thicker than that, but some are about 0.5mm, still pretty thin. And very strong.

I think the acrylic tape mentioned will also be difficult and messy to remove down the road. The thinner 3M VHB tape holds great but can be removed easily.

I would try the Command Strip replacement strips. They are very sticky and come off clean by pulling the tab down.

I use the 3m Command strips for a couple of battery powered sensors that need to be taken down for battery replacement.

How do these fare on painted walls? I'm still looking for a good solution on paint. Right now, I use painter's tape, but that doesn't stick all that well.

The double sided tape that comes with window insulation kits is meant to strip off easily.

Just FWIW, I have yet to find ANY double sided tape that both adheres well and long term, AND is safe for most painted surfaces. In our last house I ended up repainting almost every place that had had a sensor for more than a year. Your mileage may vary, but don't say you weren't warned.

I have found that command strips can affix most sensors to a wall for years without an adverse effect on paint.

I've been using this for years. I've never had a sensor fall. I have contact and motion sensors mounted with it. YMMV

I have used the command strips that have sticky on one side and a velcro like side. They are meant for making the object removable without removing the strips. I think they are made for picture frames. One is up now with a qolsys motion sensor. This works well for battery changes.

I've had no issues with Command strips. As long as it is NOT a freshly painted wall. I'd wait a few months on new paint. Follow removal instructions.

It is not tape but something I have been using for over a year is the "sticky tack" type material like teachers used to use in school. It is like that clay stuff that is sticky and used to stick posters and stuff to walls.

I found some Locktite version of it on Amazon that is blue that I use. Gorilla also makes a white kind. I have had sensors stick for a year with it with no issue. If need to remove it just pulls off the wall. If any small amount remains just use the old off your sensor to dab it off the wall. You can reuse it but with the cost as cheap as it is I usually just replace it with new. Very little will go a long way.

That looks very interesting, 1,500 reviews, 90% 5/4 star reviews (77% 5/13% - 4). Got some on the way to try out.

Hadn't seen this version, thanks for noting it, really like that it's a reusable version of the command strips, which are very good. We have a few pics we're going to be hanging soon so will give these a try for that.

I use command strips. They make some thin, clear ones which are great. They hold weight well and remove easily leaving no residue or any trace.

There are available command strips, that are as thin as scotch tape and clear as well. I've only seen them sold in the package including small white hooks, but you maybe able to find the refills.
PS with all these command strips, if removed wrong you will damage the surface, always removed with a slow pull & always parallel to the surface.

I've been using .... and like.. alien tape. It's removable without residue and it has a powerful adhesion. It may be a bit thick for your application but check it out!

How about leveling the picture...seems like you miss slightly and you have to start over w/a new strip. Been an issue at all?

Yes it can be an issue. I use blue masking tape as a guide before applying, when needed. However for wall pictures I much prefer the thicker command strips w/ velcro. Even tho I use a laser level, the wife is much more accurate :grinning:, and with the velcro strips I can easily pull off and repostion, probably 3 or 4 times.
