Recommend Z-Wave Smoke/CO detector

My Z-Wave First Alert detector from 2017 is doing the 5 chirp end of life every couple minutes, so the batterys have been pulled. Looking at the Amazon order it was $44 back then. Today they want $75 for the next available model.

Searching reviews it looks to work with Hubitat. Anyone have an alternative they like? Otherwise I just get this one. Needs to be battery powered.

It's out of stock, but Lowe's (the only other approved retailer I see on their site) has/had it for $60. It would still be my pick if I could find it. They don't note it as discontinued, so I'm assuming it will be back eventually. The Amazon price, which I don't see anymore either with it being totally out of stock there now, might have been inflated due to low stock.

Other than that, I generally lean towards "listener" devices, like the Ecolink FireFighter (Z-Wave or Zigbee; not sure if they still make both), Ring listener, or similar devices. If hardwired, you have even more options like the Zooz ZEN55. Either of these approaches work with any standard detector so have that advantage going for them.

This is my recommendation, also.

Nest protects with an ecolink firefighter

I have 2 of the 410s and have been watching for more. I’ve seen the Amazon price as low as $56

+4 for ecolink firefighter, plus whatever smoke/CO detector best meets the needs of the room that it’s in.

If you have wired detectors where if one goes they all go, you can use the z-wave Zooz Zen55 to relay the alarm into Hubitat. With that you will not need several z-wave detectors. None in fact because the wired alarm network will be reporting via that single Zen55 device.

I get the Zooz ZEN55 integration but are there any reliable hardwares smoke detectors that actually work ? Don't First Alert SC5, they get bad reviews.

What is the community using reliably ?

You are asking if there are hardwired smoke detectors that work? That's a pretty large installed base worldwide.

I just need one US version that integrates in HE that doesn't have false alarms throughout the night. I was using Nest Protect via Starling Hubs and HomeKit and have heard bad reviews about the First Alerts follow on.

Well that's not good, I'm on Nest and was going to move to the FA replacement...looks like I'll have to do a dive into that.

I currently am on Nest Protects. Love path light and they do not false. Plus they speak and can say which detector is in alarm. Guess they worked to good so Google bought them then killed them. I have a few more years on mine before they age out. I have researched replacements and up to now it is looking like dumb wired with a zen55 instead of 7 z-wave enabled ones. But I may reconsider.

You are that easy to sway? I have some ocean front property and a bridge you might be interested in. /jk

I think the SMCO410 is the latest ZW detector from First Alert.

I use the Zen55 solution with dumb detectors (and am very happy with it), so I have no first-hand experience with any First Alert devices.

Man, I miss my old zigbee Halo detectors - those things were awesome.

Def easy to send me off to the interweb for more info, for sure.

Quick check on Amazon - it does not look pretty. Dings on Product Quality, Compatibility, App Integration, and Voice Quality. Amazon reviewers not noted for high quality themselves, but not a good first look.

Also finding similar bad news on Reddit, particularly false alarms, bad voice, not happy w/remote silencing.

Family LOVES the Protects, esp wife...sigh. I do have a while to make my plans, just looked up my dates on my Protects and they don't expire until late 2030. Hopefully FA will have their replacement working well by then, or other appealing options appear.

I fact checked you. I pulled a FA hardwired product and it has 4.6 stars with 27 thousand plus reviews.

Anyone here getting paid to trash products?

Most people with false alarms have non sealed junction boxes above their detectors. This can pull dirt and dust in. Also pet hair, bugs and spiders are common.

I have 18 wired smoke/Co sensors in my house plus wireless qolsys heat and smoke. I do not get false alerts.

Im not suggesting products can't have defects. Stick with the most common product code.

As noted at the top of the thread, get a reliable smoke detector that works as you want, and then separately integrate it into HE using a listening device like an Ecolink FireFighter.

I have seven of the First Alert prior to the 2025 version with the sealed batteries. I have had zero issues with false alarms, remaining on the mesh, and the build quality seems as good as any smoke detector I have used over the years. Based on my experience when these give up the ghost on their life span I will be replacing with the newer model.

Full disclosure the hardwired versions may be different and I have zero experience with those.

Yup - agree about the general quality of FA products, in the past I had a house full of their Z-Wave version and found them reliable and dependable.

It's obviously still early days on the new model so relatively small volume of reviews and comments across sites, but the overall intial feedback is not encouraging so far. :man_shrugging:
