New Philips Hue Bridge Pro and Other Stuff

Looks like Philips Hue is going to be releasing a lot of new stuff (https://hueblog.com/2025/08/14/hue-bridge-pro-and-other-new-products-appear-on-the-hue-website/) in September. The new Bridge Pro (https://hueblog.com/2025/08/14/hue-bridge-pro-usb-c-wi-fi-and-much-more-power/) looks very interesting and I'm curious as to how well the motion sensing works.

I think @bertabcd1234 is going to need a GoFundMe.

I had one of my LIFX bulbs start disconnecting and reconnecting to WiFi every few minutes even though it is only about twelve feet from the nearest access point. It is probably at least seven years old. OK. Time to replace it. But, recent reviews of LIFX bulbs from long time users complain about lower quality and dependability compared to older bulbs. There are a bunch of new color bulbs in the $6 - $10 dollar range so I looked at those. Then I saw the Hue bulbs for $45 or so. Why would anyone buy those. Then I read the reviews for the Hue bulbs and Amazon had a starter pack with two color bulbs and the Hue bridge for $97. Well, maybe I should give them a try.

Here's the point if you are still reading: Now I have to wait for the Hue Bridge Pro to come out while the starter pack had same-day delivery. I'm not a patient person.

Looks like existing hue lights will be able to sense motion with the new hue bridge pro. Makes me wonder if they’ll be good for room presence detection or if they’ll be like my cheap garage lights that operate on some weird frequency that turns on my garage lights whenever someone enters the guest room.

Yea the price is premium. Older bulbs had poor color ie the greens or reds were not very accurate. I bought my first Hue hub and starter kit back in 2016. Guess what? Those bulbs are still in use today. Have been outdoors in fixtures for 3 of those years. Still work perfectly every day. I have never had one go bad yet. Heck one of my now 40 lights or so is running with no diffuser after a cat attacked it.

The calculation is different for everyone I know. Good to have choices.

How would this work? Bluetooth or WiFi sensor? I am so curious how they do this but only with a new Hub.

I believe it's looking at signal timing changes (due to movement) based on frequencies in the Zigbee range - See: Philips Hue’s MotionAware turns its smart bulbs into motion sensors | The Verge

Normally I’m an early adopter of this type of stuff but I think (since it’s already sold out) I’ll wait to see how it goes to see if it’ll fit my needs.

Info with no pay wall.

Any word from the HE team when support for the new Hue Bridge Pro will be compatible with the Hue Bridge Integration app?

What makes you think it wouldn't already work?

There's additional functionality with the new bridge. Plus who knows if the API is different. They didn't formally launch the update to the app until today, so until someone gets one and does the conversion, I doubt we'll know if it already works with the existing integration.

Philips does. The worst case is maybe a re-authorization: How to upgrade to the Hue Bridge Pro | Philips Hue

Sure, but some of it (e.g., additional device capacity) has no bearing on the integration. For the rest (e.g., MotionAware), there is no information I can find yet about whether it's for Bridge use only or exposed over the API, and the existence of additional functionality does not mean existing functionality wouldn't work. (EDIT: Just saw that MotionAware is available in the API. But the point still stands that a new feature being available, whether in use by the integration or not, does not affect existing functionality.)

The built-in Hue integration is not specifically tied to any Bridge model and is known to work with the V1 and V2 (and "V2.1" as a later revision was sometimes called) Bridge, plus third-party Hue Bridge emulators like diyHue. I have little doubt the Bridge Pro will be the same. There might be some issues with HTTPS, which the new Bridge is rumored to enforce, but that should be easy to address in the integration in the cases where it matters.

I think this is a large part of the interest and ask. So, the answer may be that folks didn't get an early release and we won't see and special integration with MotionAware out of the gate. It's a wait and see.

I bought a pro and look forward to integrating motion.

Let us know how it goes. My temptation to get a bridge pro is tempered by my assumption that I will have to swap out all of the lights on 2 hue bridges in my apps on 2 C-8s. Makes me tired just thinking about it.
On another note, I saw that the bridge pro has 8 GB of DDR4 RAM. Seems like it should be enough for another 10 years.

With any luck the migration takes minutes. I'm capped by the 50 light limit on the old hub so looking forward to the 150 headroom on the pro.

I'm interested to see what non bulb products they enable for motion.

:crossed_fingers:

The new Hue Bridge Pro has 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of eMMC storage.

It could likely run HE at that scale...

I didn't get that from the phrasing. But I see a post from Philips/Signify yesterday indicating that MotionAware is indeed available in the API, so such integration would be theoretically possible. How usable the data is anywhere or on Hubitat specifically is TBD.

There is no indication of any fundamental API change as insinuated, just the caveats I noted above.

Not sure if you have seen it yet, but they did post the updates to the API in the developer's site. In a quick glance, it looks like MotionAware is a separate thing from Motion Sensors in the API. The good news is that both report the same values, so this might be able to be treated as a motion sensor in Hubitat; though, I'll let you and the other developers figure that out.

There is a forum post from the Developer Support account that mentions all the changes/new things.

Note, I say all of the above just to bring it to yours and others attention. I'm incredibly thankful to your work with both CoCoHue and the Built-in. It's been 10 years since we got a new Hue bridge, so there is definitely some excitement.
