Monitoring Charging of a TalentCell Battery With a Zooz ZEN04

edit: I am attempting to lengthen the life of my TalentCell battery by charging and discharging via a ZEN04 plug.

How accurate is the AutoOn and AutoOff on say, a ZEN04?
I set a 12 hour, ie 720 minute, cycle, and it was ~17 minutes off this morning.
Not critical, for me.

I have never used the auto on/auto off function, so I cannot respond to your question directly. However, if you want exact times for the switch functions, write a rule using basic rules or rule machine that turns the switch on or off at a specific times of day or relative to sunrise/sunset if appropriate. That should insure activation at precise times. If connected to the Internet, the Hubitat hub syncs with Internet Time Servers periodically.

Of course. But the question involves the auto on/off function.

My guess is that whatever minimal computing guts are in the plug can handle short time calulations (seconds up to a few minutes? dunno), but will start to drift pretty hard at long intervals. It's not like there's an NTP server in there.

Probably uses the 60Hz power source and a counter as indicated here. Unless specially designed to keep extremely accurate time, all clocks will slowly drift. You do not see it as much anymore because so many devices are online, and sync with NTP.

The signal can be extracted from the 60-Hz oscillations in a normal power line. Many clocks that get their power from a wall socket use this technique because it is cheap and easy. The 60-Hz signal on the power line is reasonably accurate for this purpose.

Well, it turned itself on at 07:33:47.224 PM, or ~15 minutes longer than 12 hours (720 minutes) from when it turned itself off last time.
edit: This is greater than any fluctuation in electric utility frequency. I haven't tried this with any other Zooz devices, like the relays. Perhaps @agnes.zooz could shed some light on this.

I had the idea of monitoring power delivered by the plug. It passes the watts along to the battery and the devices. The devices, I'd say, are fairly steady state. As the battery charges up, the total watts delivered should be going down. Perhaps I could turn it off before the state of charge gets to 100%, to preserve battery life...or something. :slight_smile:
edit: I think this has potential. I changed watts interval reporting to 1 minute, the minimum.


It's just clock drift. Asking a simple device like that to track 12 hours with a ton of accuracy is a lot. Auto on/off periods are typically a couple seconds or maybe a few minutes, not 12 hours. For that long of a period, you're better off using a rule via the hub (which does employ NTP).

Again with the NTP.
The prime deal with Hubitat is "no net required".
My clock radio keeps great time with no NTP.
It's not clock drift.
It doesn't affect my current battery charging idea.

Hopefully if hydro311 would not know what he is talking about, he would keep his big mouth shut.

The driver has an option for 65535 minutes auto on or off. 720 in this case is not extraordinary. I am using this driver to set this value. How can one change the value without a driver? You can't. So, to say it's irrelevant is specious.

Looking at the debug logs, it does appear that the auto on and off parameters are indeed set at 720:
So, it's on Zooz.

At roughly the hour and a half mark, the TalentCell's charger is still showing a red light, which means the battery is being charged.

The log verifies this. It is at 6.9 watts now, and still going down. The monitoring reporting interval is set at 1 minute, as I noted earlier.

It started the charge cycle at 29.6 watts. This includes the basic router and Hubitat hub, probably most of the 6.9 watts now being reported.

The charging started after a period of ~12 hours powering the setup on battery only. Four (of 4) lights were still showing on the TalentCell.

The green light on the TalentCell charger was on this morning.

From the logs, it looks like the power consumption as reported by the ZEN04 dropped down to, and stabilized at 2.1 Watts at ~12:44 AM.

This is with a Hubitat C8 and a Netgear N300 WiFi router attached to the TalentCell's USB and 12 V barrel DC connections.

It took a long time to get to the final fully charged state-almost asymptotic-like.

To recap, after the battery discharged 12 hours, it required 5 hours to be fully charged. It went from 29.6 Watts to a final 2.1 Watts.

Now, this is a fuzzy area for me:

IF it is good to not bring a Li-Ion battery to full charge, how far above the final consumption should I target?

Consumption went down to 5 Watts after two hours.

Should I discharge the battery for 12 hours and then bring it back to where it is consuming, say, only 5 Watts?

Right now, I have it on a 12 hour on/12 hour off, approximately, lol, schedule.

I suppose anything will be better than keeping it fully charged, which is what killed it, I suppose.

I use the AccuBattery app for my phone. It recommends charging to 80%. It takes about half the time to charge to 80% as it does to 100%.
With your setup, is your plug powering more than the charger? It's hard to know what exactly is happening if other devices are on the same plug.
My recommendation is compare the run time on a full charge to the run time on a half the full-time charge. If your battery pack doesn't give you an accurate % full reading, then the run time is the next best thing.
You may need to do the halftime charge then the run time to empty several times to get an estimate of the battery %full for a half time charge.

80% sounds like a plan!

No other devices are powered by the plug.

The lights indicating charge I don't think are accurate.
I believe other people have noted this as well.

I do think the watts being delivered can be an indicator as well, and can also probably correlate to charge time.
edit: But, having the thinking done by the plug vs hub might have advantages during a power outage where power availability could be variable depending on temporary power supplies.

See post above. I'm keeping track of deviation from the 720 minute auto on/off set through ZEN04 parameters. However, I'll very soon shorten the charging duration so it doesn't get to 100%, also as discussed above.

I might try to put together a graph of the power log, but I'll be using the charting tool in OpenOffice; can't afford anything fancier. I'm no GraphMaster, for sure, but I was given that nickname when I was working by a coworker friend of mine. :slight_smile:
