I would personally not use Smart Bulbs in fixtures that are controlled by light switches. I prefer to use 'dumb' bulbs if they have the high likelihood of being turned off manually. Otherwise, you have to usually train the family to never touch the traditional light switches so the bulbs stay powered all of the time. Then you'll still need to add something like Hue 'switches' or Pico remotes to provide local control.
Ooooooo I got yah
For places that don't have smart bulbs , put lutron
No.
Smart bulbs are nice and all but really don't fill your house with any kind of smart bulb. Please. Use them sparingly in lamps or other places that do not have a physical switch or one that is easy to get to.
People turn off switches. It's habbit that has been engrained in them since childhood of our parents yelling at us to turn off the light. When switches are turned off your "smart bulbs" are now dumb as rocks and things go south and so does the WAF.
I might just return everything and do just this
Not in my house , I put hue switches by the outlet and the family is trained to use them
They don't even touch the outlets any more and putting the lutron hue dimmers over the switch so you can't physically turn it off
Personally I think the Hue switches are ugly as all get out. Kinda like how @JasonJoel feels about Caseta
And the stick on the wall??? come on how cheap can Philips be to NOT make a mount that fits in a standard gang box.
The Lutron Aurora is a nice switch. I have 1 in my house for a set of color hue bulbs. The only set of bulbs that are attached to a wall switch.
I agree. Don't use z-wave bulbs. They all are horrible compared to Zigbee bulbs and too expensive in comparison as well.
For bulbs I only promote/sell Hue or LIFX nothing else. I also recommend using the Hue bridge even with Hubitat.
I am doing that now , I have the HUE bridge with hubitat
I have been testing the invoelli color bulb
I always thought that was kind of lame too.
Could I i time zwave outlets to lifx bulbs
This way i can program the switch to turn the bulb off but it would leave power to the bulb as in I would disable the relay but have power to the switch and using the programing of the switch tell lifx the turn off
Technically you can do this. Just create a rule, flow, event, macro whatever your system calls it (yes I use, have many systems)
Yet I'm left to ask the why do this. I do not recommend smart bulbs in fixtures that have a switch.
You've now spent money on a smart switch and a smart bulb and using the switch as a remote....Use a Pico Remote for this ![]()
Short answer , I love color lights
Long answer , if i want to turn the entire house blue i want to be able to do this
This is why color bulbs are going in all fixtures
this, exactly! Pico remotes are so much more useful that trying to use a Smart Switch with no load. With a Pico, you get Pushed, Held, and Released events for each button. This allows one to used Pushed events for on/off, and held/released events to start and stop dimming a bulb. Not sure if this works with Philips Hue bridge connected bulbs though. Works great with my Sengled bulbs. ![]()
In that case, I'd look at using lots of those Lutron Aurora dimmers directly paired to the Hue bridge. Solves two problems at once, and they look decent. They are also 'obvious' in how to use them.
Sigh , I was originally going to do that then i thought i save on invoelli bulbs and zwave switches
I learned a lot tonight , might stick to hue after all
Or say screw it and do zwave redline switches with rely off and hue .....lol
After all I just bought 8 of them....lol
One thing to be aware of, @sstretchh. If you use the Philips Hue app on your phone to adjust Hue bulbs, or the Hue 'Switch' or Lutron Aurora, those signals are all direct to the Hue bridge and will work great.
However, Hubitat will not 'know' about those changes until it polls the Hue bridge, usually within a few minutes. So, if you want something to happen immediately in Hubitat when a Hue bulb changes state, it won't happen until the next polling interval. This is due to the Philips Hue LAN API not having support for immediate status updates. This is not a Hubitat implementation issue.
That is good to know , should be ok
I got in the habit already to make a dashbosrd for each room and they are all saved on the phone
I have been starting there
Here is what kicking in my head after tonight , think it will be a little over kill but I think it will work well
I think I will do every switch in the house as redline dimmers , fixtures i will put hue or lifx, program that switch to turn the bulbs on or off ,( this way power is never cut ,)
Then use hubitat to set all my automation when i walk in room things turn on, etc..... Then use switch if needed
Unless it should be lutron instead on that strategy
How many are you talking about? The Lutron Pico remotes can be had for usually under $15 a piece, so the added cost of the Lutron SmartBridge Pro gets absorbed very quickly. The picos will just work, every time, and have a 10 year battery life. Just something to consider. As you might tell from my posts, I am not a huge Z-Wave fan. If you look through the forum, you will find lots of Z-Wave issues, some Zigbee issues (usually due to poor ZHA1.2 repeaters like some bulbs), and almost no Lutron issues. Just something to consider... ![]()
Let me count all outlets , give me a few
