I have about 24 devices connected to HE via the lutron integration. I have a dimmer that doesnt seem to function correctly.
If i remove the switch from the lutron hub (factory reset it) it works fine. Press the top button it goes on 100% press the bottom button it turns off. Press the up dim it gets brighter and down dim it gets dimmer.
When i connect the dimmer to the lutron hubpro2. I can control the switch from the lutron app.
I have an automation that triggers on motion. and sets the dimmer to 35% but nothing happens. in homekit the dimmer switch shows its on at 35%. if i try to change the dimmer level nothing happens. if i turn off the light then turn it on then the dimmer starts working again.
to me since the switch functions perfect when its not connected to the hub tells me the issue is with the automation.
trigger:
Hue Sensor Kitchen motion active
action:
Dim: Lights Kitchen: 35
On: Lights Kitchen
I have changed out the caseta dimmer switch 3 times. All of them are new and have the same symptoms.
If i pull the FASS out and push it back in the automation starts working. After some time it stops working again.
It sounds to me like that switch may be on the fringe of the Caseta SmartBridge Pro hub's RF range. Just a guess. How large is your house? How many floors? What materials are you walls made from? Where in your house is the Lutron Hub located? Do you have any Caseta devices performing the role of a Lutron ClearConnect RF repeater?
This Lutron article may help explain the repeater options (there are only 2 options!)
Agree a repeater might help, although the fact that things work well when going through the Lutron hub make that suspect. If you have a lamp module/dimmer device that can function as a repeater (I can't remember which will, but that linked article will tell you) it's worth a try. I have Lutron set up in five buildings on our property, with the hub in the basement (albeit near a window) of one of them. The repeater is in the second story of one of the buildings, and allows for a very solid system. The repeater more than doubled the range, so may as well give that a shot.
i doubt it has anything to do with the hub being too far away. i can turn it on and off from the HE device dashboard. once i turn it on 100% and off then the dimmer function can be controlled via HE. but then it goes away. also there are other lutron switches that are more than double the distance of this one.
25 feet from the transmitter is not an unacceptable distance.
If it is setup as a switch in Hubitat, would it show up as a dimmer when exposed to HomeKit (as per the OP’s description), or would Rule Machine permit dimming actions for that device?
It may still have the wrong dimmer driver though ….
If resetting the FASS temporarily fixes the issue, then @ogiewon’s suggestion that this is a ClearConnect range or RF issue remains the most likely explanation.
Look at the Hubitat device page. In the Device Information section the Type should be Lutron Dimmer. If it is set correctly check to see if setting a % on that page works as intended. You may want/need to look at the logs to see what is going on.
Its definitely in the automation. I just disabled the rule and created a simple if motion set to 50% and it works. 25 feet with no walls is not an issue for any wireless. Not even bluetooth.
I was doing more things in the original rule. Ill re examine the logic but if it was able to show the device setting changed to 35% dim the light should have come on.
As for the FASS comment i was mistaken. It was a coincidence that it worked when i pulled the tab and put it back in. In the end it had nothing to do with the problem.
what i thought was working is only half working. the lights are going on when motion is triggering them but they are going on 100% even though the dim is set to 50%
Ok after taking the screen shots i compared what HomeKit was reporting 100% and HE reports it at 50% on the device. Also i double checked the physical switch and it is in fact at 50%.
so it appears that the rule is doing what its supposed to do . The device is doing what i expect it to do but HomeKit is reporting 100%.
if i control the dimmer from HomeKit or HE they both increase and decrease the brightness and both report the same percentage.
the odd thing now is, now that i adjusted the dimmer via HomeKit and HE its still reporting the correct value. but if i let it set for a few minutes it reverts to showing homekit at 100%
could there be some communication issue between homekit and he. they are both on the same wired network.
I've not seen these kinds of issues for HomeKit, so I don't have any good hypotheses. Is this the only dimmer that exhibits these issues? What happens if you delete/re-add the from/to HomeKit?
What platform version are you on? The current platform release version is 2.3.7.145.
