Long Range ZWave & strengthening the mesh

Good morning.
I recently bought some ZOOZ products ( zen 37 wireless remote switches) and a few ZSE 18 motion sensors that note they are long range compatible.
I have a C8 hub. Do i need to do anything special to enable the long range feature?

On an unrelated note..I live in Malaysia with 240v 50 hz power. All of the condos here are built out of cement, including interior walls. The construction doesnt lend well to signal going from room to room. Im looking to buy some Z wave products to strengthen my mesh as i only have a handful of devices. Finding 240 50 hz wave isn't easy, or cheap. And when you do find a 240 z wave smart plug...it's almost always set to the UK z wave frequency. According to the zooz description, when the motion sensor is plugged into a USB power supply, it acts as a range extender. Assuming that means the same as a repeater. So - hopefully that helps.

I also bought a few of there Zen 52 relays. they can operate on 120/60 or 240 50 hz. It might be a DIY but im in the process of building a couple of "extension cords" and used a double gang box so i can insert the zen 52 in to the plastic enclosure and strategically place them around the condo to help strengthen the mesh. When my Zen 52s show up next week. Wish there was easier options but not many options for mains powered z wave at 240v 50 hz.

Hopefully this helps someone else if they have a similar issue with non US based z wave networks.

Cheers

Yes, they need to be included as LR devices, as this is determined at inclusion. This requires Smart Start and not the classic inclusion process. See:

I don't know what Z-Wave frequency Malaysia uses, but it's different in different regions, and LR is only supported for the US frequency right now.

Currently, ZW LR is only for the US market. Expansion elsewhere is anticipated, but not yet available.

Thanks. I believe I read in one of the previous posts that when set to LR that the extender / repeater function doesn’t work. Is that correct?
Thanks.

The document I linked to above explains this.

But no, LR is a star, not mesh, topology. "Repeaters" are not a feature of LR for this reason.

Thanks. For some reason i have 2 different versions of the mobil app.
2.1.0 (383) and 1.35 Build 166.
Use the later mobil version?
Im going to exclude and re join as LR.

Thanks

Either version will let you add LR devices; you just need to use SmartStart (most easily from the mobile app and in any case not the admin interface Add Device page on the hub itself). But yeah, 2.0 is the newer version and what I'd recommend if you don't have some reason to keep using the older one at this point.

I’ll have to look for it on the web interface. For some reason I don’t get an add devices option on my Mobil app.
I have 2 hubs. One in my house and one here in KL.
I made sure I was logged into the correct hub
Then navigated to the devices tab. However. I don’t see a plus button to add the device.

As has been mentioned a couple times already, I'm not sure what ZW freq is used in Malaysia, but LR is only available (well, legally anyway) in the United States currently. It has not yet been approved for use elsewhere in the world.

Either you aren't local or the mobile app thinks you aren't (you'll see "(cloud)" on the Home tab). If you are local -- you need to be -- and it doesn't think you are, this is a bug in the current production release, which is resolved in the public mobile app beta if you wanted to try that; otherwise, the old version that it sounds like you still have can also do it.

its a zen 37 on US frequency and the hub is set to US.
Oddly enough, while i cant see a + option on devices in the new app to add a device, i can see add smart device on the old app using tools (wrench icon) . I tried adding it using the camera, It recognizes the QR code and prompts me to add a device name but after that it simply goes back to the smart start screen and says no devices added. tried to add multiple times

trouble shooting so far.

  • Excluded the Zen 37. confirmed on the logs
  • Downloaded the most recent app firmware 2.4.1.254
  • Removed and reinstalled the hubitat mobil app. 2.1.0 (383)

Odd that i don't get an option of adding a device form the latest mobil app.
Gremlin or am i doing something wrong?

Cheers

Yes...it says cloud.
More troubleshooting

  • I only have the one wireless network in the condo
  • The hub is plugged directly into the router
  • i uninstalled the app
  • disabled the cellular function on my phone so the only connectivity i have is my wireless network ( same router)
  • re installed the ap - logged on
  • selected the KL hub ( noted earlier i have another back in the US in my house)
  • However - still says (cloud) right after my hub name.

when i select the hub, go to the Hub User Management...it does note Admin

Any thoughts on how i set to local?
Or conversely - is there an option on the web interface to add LR wave in devices?

thanks again for the assistance

No sense in doing that when...

So, if you're affect, the most you can do is probably go to the beta. That process is explained here:

You can also manually add the device by sending the DSK to an HTTP endpoint on the hub or, more easily, using a popular community app that does the same for you, but if you can make the app work, that's a lot easier to start with.

That being said, I'm not sure I'd recommend using Z-Wave devices outside the regions where they are authorized (unlike Zigbee, it is different worldwide due to differing regulations -- and their preference for lower frequencies).

Appreciate the help. I installed the beta app. it shows version 2.11 (390)
However - still showing set to cloud and still no option to add devices ( + Button) on the devices page.
Will either try and figure out how to get off the cloud and get local - or wait for the app to be updated.

appreciate your help so far but i can wait till its sorted. Was just toying around on a sunday as i was bored
Thanks again

Maybe uninstall and reinstall? The issue before (if you had a new install from after this bug was introduced) is that it didn't request Local Network access, which you can also check in iOS settings though might not be there if the app didn't ask in the first place.

No Joy sadly.
Couple of things I did check an update.

  • I noticed in the web interface under "WiFi settings" that there was no network set up. So I selected my wireless, typed in the WiFi password and now my network is listed

  • Rebooted the hub

  • confirmed i was still showing my network in wifi settings

  • ensured my cellular data was turned off and i was connected to the same network ( its th only one i have) and to be certain it was connected to 2.4 ghz

  • uninstalled and reinstalled the beta version app

  • Checked the iOS settings. Enabled local network access

  • logged in to the Mobil app

  • Still showing cloud.
-Still no + option under devices

Only thing i can note is on the app, when i select where it says cloud...that under Home wifi network...it says "Null"
I simply cant force it to the local network.

oh well. not a big deal. I'll re add the zen 37 the regular way.
Appreciate your help - i expect its getting late in the US by now:(

cheers

This does not matter unless you want to connect the hub using Wi-Fi. Since you were able to access it before, presumably you were using Ethernet, which should work.

As for the rest, not sure, but it seems like you've tried some good troubleshooting. It's possible there will be more fixes in future builds, though I'm not aware of any recently. That being said, traditional inclusion should still work, if nothing else!
