My daughter moved to a new place. She is going to have cleaning person come in very other Wednesday I haven’t been able to find any non-smart locks that can do that type of schedule so I’m looking to replace the Kwikset 270 she currently has.
I will be giving her my C7 as I replaced it with a C8 a while ago. So this will be her first, and quite possibly only, smart device. She doesn’t care about any bells or whistles like fingerprint or facial recognition, etc. She is on,y getting it to do this.
Part of me is leaning towards another Kwikset if it is the same size so we don’t have to worry about possibly having to repaint part of the door.
Thanks for the fast reply. I totally understand that. I've done lots of rules, including original and new rule machine. I just need help deciding which lock to get her.
I did this with my Kwikset. On a schedule I had an app that wrote a particular code to the lock. Then when it was no longer needed it deleted the code until the next time.
If you don't want 85 tech support calls, I'd suggest putting the hub close to the lock or a Z-wave repater nearby the lock, but you probably already thought of that...wisper mode
I was thinking about that. I can't move her modem as it is a fiber optic cable that only comes into her family room that is on the far side of the house. But I'm pretty sure I can do a line of sight to the C7.
I have very little Zigbee experience. I have a couple of Phillips bulbs and 2 of their motion sensors. Neither are repeaters, but all have worked fine for years. Everything else I have is Z-Wave Plus.
I just keep seeing how Z-wave seems to be getting squeezed out, which I assume is because Matter and Zigbee are on the same frequency. (Or is it that manufactures don't want to go through the paperwork/cost of being Z-Wave certified?)
Thanks! The only thing is I'm not crazy about the rubber buttons. My daughter has one like that (though no smarts) and it got kind of grungy while the flat panel style still looks nice.
However, my bigger concern is that this will be her one and only smart device and is going to be about 25-30 feet away, which makes me leery of Z-Wave, even long range. So, I'm leaning towards Zigbee.
I leave my house keeper's code active all the time (as I don't want to constantly add/remove enable/disable codes), and just send an urgent alert to my cell phone if that code is ever used on a non-cleaning day.
I don't think Zigbee has better range. I just had some bad Z-Wave ghost issues and thought Zigbee would thus be a better choice. Plus, it seems Z-wave is getting ignored more and more in favor of Zigbee and Matter
I think that ZWaveJS has changed that. I created a couple ghosts on purpose. They were removed very easily without any external tools. BTW, with platform 2.5.2, ZWaveJS can be used on your C-7.
With that said, Kwikset also sells zigbee deadbolts - I have one at another location, and it works as well as my z-wave plus versions do.
Maybe. But that doesn't stop existing devices from working well.
Indeed! At one point of time, I counted that over 10 people had copies of my front door key. Some copies never made it back to me. Smart locks have changed that completely.
No one (besides my partner/spouse) has a copy of my door key now.
Not sure if that makes the house any more secure - because it is still easy to kick the door in. Although it certainly makes me feel better ....
I have the exact same set up but with a Yale lock. I set up a global variable. Use rule machine to flip its status once a week on same day.
then second rule machine to check If global variable is true and the specific day of the week, enable a code via LCM. I only enable it for a specific time window of the day, then disables the code via LCM. Push notifications when enable and disabled. Works perfectly.
Someone uses a key that you gave them - NOT breaking and entering. (Also, not detectable or recorded when they actually use it like a smart lock is)
Someone kicks in the door - Breaking and Entering.
Not necessarily more secure. But definitely more able to prosecute. I would think if you had codes that only worked on the proper day, the same would apply if they tried to enter on a not proper day.
