Lights turning on/off on their own

Hub model C7, platform version 2.4.1.177

Last night shortly after going to bed the lights in my master bedroom and closet turned on by themselves (smart bulbs). A couple hours later my son woke me up because the lights in his room turned on (smart plug). Throughout the night this continued with random lights turning on every 1-2 hours but never repeating the same lights. They’re all a mix of smart bulbs, plugs and casetta switches.

Today when I came home from work the same occurred as many lights were on that should not have been. Since being home lights are also randomly turning off. This is not caused by any automations. When I check the event log it says produced by lutron Telnet, the type is digital and triggered apps is Amazon Alexa skill. I double checked the Alexa app and there is nothing in there indicating these lights should have been triggered. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this? I’m afraid my family is going to be woken up throughout the night again. Appreciate the help!

Yes, turn off Alexa Hunches in the Alexa app.

You’re saying to turn off “hunches suggestions?” It says Alexa will notify me when it has a hunch but I never received any notifications so not sure if this is the cause. I turned it off either way. I hope you’re right.

That is correct but her notification or really suggestion of a hunch will often come right after you ask her to turn on/off a light and you might not realize what she is asking and the downfall of saying "yes" to her question/suggestion.

If turning off hunches solves this, you aren't alone in Alexa causing havoc with hunches. Search this community or SmartThings community and you will see many many posts from the past several years. When questions like this get posted the first question is usually do you have Amazon Echos in your house

For me, Google Home automations was randomly playing with lights too. Most of those were relics pre-dating Hubitat. Removed them and the ghost was gone. The only things left now are so voice can operate a few things. Usually poorly.

So it is not hunches as I was awoken by my bedroom lights turning on. It seems like the same groups of lights are turning on each time. I had to shut down my hub for the rest of the night so it doesn’t wake my kids. Very frustrating - what is the next thing to troubleshoot?

What does the event log for these groups of lights indicate?

Look for Alexa Routines that may have been automagically created in your Alexa App on your phone.

For my bedroom lights it says it was a command produced by the Amazon echo skill.

No Alexa routines. I’ve gone through the Alexa app multiple times.

I should add that when I check the history within the Alexa app it does not show any of this activity.

It’s hunches or a routine.

Hunches show up in a separate activity section in Alexa history.

I would use the voice command “disable hunches” to make sure it is off.

What brand and model are they? Are they all the same model of bulb? Wifi, Zigbee, Matter or which protocol bulb?

Maybe some screenshots would be better here so we are all on the same page as to what you are seeing.

Yes please, of the event history tab of the device in question.
Needs to be a full page screenshot showing all columns, in the area where the issue happened showing before and after. Indicate which entry is the problematic turn on.

Happy to report that I finally figured it out. Somehow, an Amazon feature called away lighting got turned on 2 days ago which turns lights on and off to make it look like you’re home. They don’t make it easy to find this setting.

I appreciate everyone’s help!

Alexa Hunches turned that on for you.

Having the same issue. I turned them all off and not ten minutes later a light flipped status. Will see if that was just a timing issue or not. happening across the house where things go on and off at random times.

Thats probably Alexa away lighting if you have your devices shared to Alexa.

I am integrated with Ring which can set it Away but it happens at night and during the day. I thought it was Away as well but cannot find where it is still occuring after I disabled Hunches and verified I was not in an Away mode.

Go to one of the impact devices pages and then the "Events" tab, find a time where it turned on an off on its own and post a screenshot of that here.

The "Produced by" column on the command-on and command-off event lines should tell you what is causing it.

This tells you how to get to the away lighting settings, make sure all devices are de-selected and it is turned off. https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=TNirBu9nqQw3pMuwmi
