Let's talk 3D printers!

OTOH, maybe slow would be better on the budget. I'm going through full spools and approaching 2/week.

Well it takes a lot to print a full-sized Lambo.

Looking forward to this!

That’s a really neat feature!

Personally I wish they’d hurry up and add Tree Supports. It’s literally the only feature Cura has that is good.

You’ll need a nice big workshop for that! I don’t have enough room for a big one, so that’s why I built mine with only a 300x300mm work area.

Ps, CNC machines are loud, especially when you add in dust collection. This was me today giving my spoil board a 0.1mm haircut.

I'm using Cura, but might switch for the Prusa text tool.

BTW, Anker's kickerstarter was a massive success, selling something like 10,000 printers. It appears that 50% of the buyers were complete noobs like me. So, the subreddit that was spawned happens to make for a good, random tutorial on general 3dP issues. Like so;

I have 2 CR-10 Smart printers, paid 400 and 320, selling now for 320.
It has auto bed leveling and nice touch screen display although I do all printing from the app on my phone. For another 25 you can add a Creality camera and get time lapse.
Large build area 300x300x400.
The app will do slicing but I do the slicing on the PC and then upload to the cloud
For design software, I've tried several but absolutely LOVE Onshape. Its free, its online and you can do on PC or mobile.

I recently purchased a Prusa Mini+ for my son, though I’m enjoying it just as much as he is. It’s been awesome. Have a great setup with dry boxes to where it’s a snap to swap colors. I’ve also printed numerous upgrades for the printer, including a nice LED light that looks OEM. I integrated it into Hubitat via the Zooz Zen31 RGBW controller since it’s tiny enough to fit into the electronics housing. Now all the Timelapse’s look excellent, and I can automatically turn on the light at the start of a print and turn it off when it’s done printing.

Ouch!! That looks like a ball of "fun" to deal with...

I've bought a lot of Anker gear over the years, usually been good quality stuff.

One thing I really like about my SV05 is that since the print-head does all the x-y moves, and the bed does z, the object grows out of the bed as you watch it slowly sink. Very cool, and something I didn't know about until I first saw it. I haven't really had any use for timelapses so far, but like being able to check print progress via the Ring cam I attached to the printer, and can scrub the Ring timeline for a timelapse if I want to see how the print progressed.

So much fun that makes my wife tilt her head and say "How old are you again?!" To which I answer 5 years old and loving it!"

Guess we'll see how long this takes:

@danabw I've let my wife know this is entirely your fault.

Woot! I will live vicariously via your Bamboo adventures! We'll need lots of info, pics, etc.

Oh noes!! If she teams up w/my wife I'm done for...

Oh, oh, great idea...we just need to point both of them at @dJOS - this all started with him and his cases for his Hubitat UPS.

Can't do that. My wife already wants to go visit Aussie Land....that would just give her the excuse she needs.

Although, that may not be a bad thing...

OK, so now I'm thinking more about colors...Sunlu (I'm using their PLA and PLA+ in black based on @dJOS recommendation) has a couple sets of colors (smaller reels) that might suit...I'm assuming most of my printing will be in black or white, with some limited color use for some objects, and for hightlighting purposes.

Thinking maybe this one more likely as the colors are a little "calmer:"

Appreciate suggestions, in terms of having some stock of colors w/out going overboard and having a life-time supply of stuff I'll never end up using, and colors you find you use most often, after black and white.

Oh, and when you get color do you tend to get "silk" versions, or just the regular finish.

Smart watch mount, integrated the charging puck (this is for a Samsung) so it sits on it and charges overnight. Even w/out the magnetic puck the mount still holds the watch just fine, so would work for any watch.

You're gonna need dry boxes for those color spools. I used a modified version of this one using gasketed cereal boxes.

OK, learning new things...color filament is more sensitive and needs a container that limits/manages humidity?

PLA does. Fix ranges from zip lock bags with desiccant to commercial containers. I went with DIY.

Thanks. So what do you do with the spool that's on the printer?

My printer feeds from the side, so I fitted a swivel filament guide port in the side of the cereal container. Placed beside the printer on the table, the spool stays inside the dry box and rotates on the roller-cradle in the bottom of the dry box. I use Poster Putty to seal the port at night while leaving the filament loaded in the printer. Seems to be working well.

For desiccant, I use these. Fits inside center hole of filament spool

This is similar to the swivel guide I used

Here's a swivel guide with a cap. If I'd run across it earlier, I would have used it. The pix is similar to my dry box.
