Is this the best option to control water heaters?

I want to contro lmy water heaters we have moved to plan for the most expensive power is 3pm-7pm so i dont want them coming on at that time.

other tested/verified options?

It must be reliable it my main worry

You could just use a dumb hot water heater timer device. Those have been around for decades and are reliable. Not as cool as a true smart home device, but probably more reliable and cheaper.

umm thats an option - in the winter it moves from 6-8am and 6-8pm each day.

I also want to set other times as well - they are new water heaters so they probably only need to kick on 2-3 times a day.
kick on at 2-3 of till 7 kick on 705 and off at 10pm kick on again at 10am? something like that.

I use this.

been reliable?

Very much so. Easy to install if you are handy with home electrical things. Easy to control with HE.

This one is much cheaper, does water leak detection (& auto shut off), has a temperature probe, makes for a great Zigbee repeater too.

There’s a built in driver but the community driver enables more features.

interesting - where do you put the Temp probe ?

Edit : RTFM - i see now

Looks really nice. Too bad it cannot handle my hot water heater's power requirements. My water heater needs something that can handle 5.7kW, or ~24A @ 240VAC.

Sounds like you would need this one (I use it for a well pump) but it has less features, essentially a power monitoring switch

That is a nicely packaged solution! And I really like Zigbee, so this is the best solution I have seen that meets my requirements. Thank you for sharing!

It is really nicely built.

I'm a bid sad it is not usable for 4-wire applications, so can't be used for a range (neutral required for 120V components), even though it could handle the load.

My only issue is it's say 20amp my hot water heater are both 30amp :frowning:

Here’s a 40amp solution that I recently installed for a well pump. https://www.amazon.com/120-277VAC-Electric-Compatible-Certified-14285/dp/B00YTCZZF0

It’s zwave and reliable so far. Has a manual on/off/auto switch inside. For some reason it’s showing out of stock at Amazon.

Thanks assuming use this to cut water off for leaks?

20A for incandescent loads, 50A for resistive.

The device linked by @pat-c is designed to handle a 40A 240VAC electrical load, like a Hot Water Heater.

It has nothing to do with tuning off water flow for leaks.

right, but he used it on a well pump - having a well myself it is the only reason i can think to use product like this - it also much cheaper than a water shut off valve.

for wells - no power no water.

@v6turbo - Here are the specs for the second Sinope device linked above by @lairdknox

Gotcha, sure that makes sense for his use case. But since your original question was about controlling a hot water heater, just wanted to make sure you knew it could be used for that application as well. Sorry for any confusion.
