Hub doesn’t recover from internet connection loss

C-8 Hub, platform version 2.3.7.145

Basically if my hub loses internet connectivity for a moment it fails to recover that connection despite all other network devices in the house succeeding. It requires a physical reboot to load up and successfully reconnect.

Networking gear is UniFi, connectivity is via WiFi. Device uses DHCP and UniFi gives it the same IP every time based on its MAC address.

I’ve seen multiple threads on this with no real solution.

The problem is I use cloud dashboard extensively to remote control things and that doesn’t work when the hub is offline.

This has been happening consistently for a year or two.

Would appreciate advice or ideally the solution if this has already been resolved.

Start by making sure your hub is on the latest platform version.

Yeah unfortunately this has been a recurring issue for some people, but for sure update to the latest platform just in case that fixes it.

If it still is having the problems, the Hub Info v3 driver has a function to check the cloud connection periodically which you could then use to trigger a rule to reboot the hub. Its obviously a work around and not a real fix it but it would help you in the meantime.

I just setup a development C8 on Wifi today, I will try and see if I can reproduce it on my end at some point this week and post about it in the beta group if I can replicate it.

I’ll update the hub but it has been exhibiting this behavior for over a year and the hub has been relatively up to date.

A connectivity checker and rebooter will work, I guess that’s that for now :frowning:

Check this out: [RELEASE] Hub Information Driver v3

I think it has a cloud check and a DNS check, you could probably use either. Let us know if you need help setting up a rule. I know a few people already have such rules on their hubs.

Thanks, I’m proficient with rules/etc so no problem there.

Honestly I was just hoping this was some mishap on my part and that the team has been able to fix something which causes the hub to randomly become unusable at times.

I think this is the first time in maybe 3 years I’ve found a problem with my Hubitat. It’s a testament to what a great product and community Hubitat is, and at the same time a stark contrast to realizing your hub can randomly stop working for no good reason.

Same here, every time I reboot my modem, HE is not recovering, I'm on static IP. And then a bunch of downstream catastrophes happen...this is kind of basic stuff, not sure why so advanced box still suffers from it.

I think it would help if you could explain a little more about your setup, such as what platform version are you running, what network connection you are using (Wi-Fi or Ethernet cable), the brand/model router you are using and where you are setting the static IP, i.e. on the HE hub or reserving one on your router.

Sure, I'm using C8 om wired Ethernet connection, with Ubiquity gear. The static IP is set in the hub and reserved in the DreamMachine.

Thanks. What platform version are you running, i.e. 2.3.x.y?

Also, and I'm no expert, but I did not think you need both the static IP on the hub and a reservation on the router. Not saying it is the issue, just I don't think it's necessary.

Pick one or the other, not both, it can cause conflicts. Recommended method is to set the hub to DHCP and reserve on the router.

Platform is 2.3.9.158

You are 8 releases and well over two months behind in updates. Release 2.3.9 Available - #20 by gopher.ny Current as of this post is 2.3.9.177.

The past few releases have specific connectivity fixes in them, I would try upgrading and test again.

Similar to my post above, you are WAY behind in updates, there have been numerous bug fixes in the 9 months that you are behind.

I actually just had this issue on .177 (beta) and posted about it in the beta group. It was a Wifi hub though, my ethernet hub has never has this issue. The Wifi hub stayed offline after a router reboot, never reconnected.

I do not feel this is a "running current firmware" problem....that is until Hub fixes their problem. Agree with others that this seems like a lazy programming issue. If i turn off/disconnect fiber/cable/etc from my modem, my hubitat c7 loses cloud access and local network from google. I have the latest and greatest firmware the time of this reply. This problem has existed for me for at least one year, maybe longer. I have had 2 different ISP with 2 different sets of hardware.
Someone smart knows the answer is either fix is abc or there is no fix....write a rule to fix it. Hmmmmm maybe Hub could put that code under the hood?

Google home is not local, that uses the cloud connection.

I just unplugged and rebooted my router within the last week, had no issues with the hub going back online afterwards. I believe both my Ethernet and Wifi hubs both reconnected fine.

The most recent builds also have an hourly cloud reconnect which should have helped. Seems there are a few people still having issues though so you are not alone. When it works fine for most people and only a few have issues it makes uncovering the issue much more difficult.
