How To Remove Ghosts using hub tools or a UZB Stick

I don't want to go off topic in the thread so I will DM you answers.

As noted, would not do this. First do a reboot w/database rebuild...start reboot from Settings page and enable advanced options and choose database rebuild. That should clean up any issues/inconsistencies in your database.

Is Smart Start manager the only you app you can't load from HPM, or do all apps fail to load? If it's already loaded it will look like below, w/the checkmark on the right side of the HPM entry...

If it looks like above you should be able to install the app on your hub using the Add User App button:

Adding the app from HPM only adds it to your list of available User apps, you then have to install it using the Add User App option. Just making sure that's clear.

If you can't load anything from HPM, then you can do a repair on HPM from within HPM:

Thank you! In reverse order:

I have loaded other user apps so I am comfortable with the procedure. One of the interminable number of reboots I have done experimenting with ghost removal resolved whaterever issue existed loading the @jtp10181 SmartStart Manager. All good on that front.

To clarify, I consider my current C8Pro deployment (all Z-Wave Zooz 800 LR devices at the moment), to be for test prior to committing the time to a bigger installation of switches. I have no problem rebuilding it from the ground up if needed, but would be happy to resolve issues less aggressively.

  • Aside from work associated with resetting and including devices again, is there some other consideration why a hub factory reset is problematic?

Regarding ghosts and related issues: Two lines powered Zooz switches for basement lights, within 10 feet of the hub failed inclusion. I suspect this is because they were both pending in the SmartStart app, and since they are on the same circuit, powered up at the same time. At the time, I was unaware of the ghost issue and futzed around, including including, excluding, rebooting devices & hub, factory reseting the switches, and force removing :scream:. I have succeeded in removing the two ghosts from the Z-Wave settings list, but have entries in the devices list ; "Basement (Upper) Lights" and "Basement (Lower) Lights" are the orphaned device entries and they do NOT appear in Z-Wave status. "Basement 2" and "Basement Stairs Top" are the functioning entries for the devices that created the orphaned entries.

  • Can you point me at the procedure for removing the orphaned device entries for these devices?
  • Is a force remove of "Basement (Upper) Lights" and "Basement (Lower) Lights" from the device list appropriate here since they are not known to the radio (e.g. do NOT appear in Z-Wave status)?
  • Under what circumstances is "Force Remove" ever advisable with a meshed or LR Z-Wave device?

Next, I have two ghosts related to exclusion failures. One is from a Ring contact sensor i am evaluating (Z-Wave LR). Here the device still exists in the Z-Wave settings list (290: Generic Z-Wave DT Notification Sensor).

There are three entries in the devices list, but the device itself is excluded (and powered off). The multiple device listing entries are from reseting the device, and including it again, and then attempting to exclude it. In each case the device indicates exclusion but not the hub.

The remove button in Z-Wave status associated with the device has never appeared despite many attempts and various refreshs, reboots, including power-on, and with database rebuild, etc.

  • I see that two of the device list entries are orphans (59: 0114) and (60:0110), and the third (58:0122) is associated with the status list entry (I believe that this is the original inclusion / exclusion). Do you have any advice on cleaning this up?

The second exclusion failure ghost is from is a Zooz SEN04 plug. As with the Ring sensor the device recoginzed the exclusion but the hub did not. I re-included the device (wondering if the hub would recognize it and I could exclude again ... it did not). The hub now sees the device included, but the device is unresponsive to hub commands. The entries are for "Zooz Plug 3" nor "Zooz Plug 3x", both seen in the Z-Wave status list (above), and the device list here:

I would love to know how to clean all these issues up if that is possible! Any input will be appreciated.

That is the main issue, and there are lots of ways to mess things up if you don't manage the process carefully...there are posts here about doing that, @jtp10181 likely knows where the best instructions for that are if you want to proceed, but I personally would avoid it if I could.

If your device is no longer listed on the Z-Wave Details page, using the Remove option from the individual Device pages for each device is fine.

"Remove" option on the Z-Wave Details page is appropriate to use for mesh Z-Wave devices if it appears for a device. That process is the hub's "built-in" way to remove non-responding Z-Wave devices. (The mash Refresh button and want for Remove button to show and then mash it dance.)

For Z-Wave LR, that's not my area of expertise, I've only a few LR devices installed and haven't been involved in any remove actvitivies related to them. @jtp10181 will have the best info here. Removing them won't affect other devices, but there have been issues that can occur after removing them that I haven't tracked closely...

Agreed and also you will mess up any rules / apps tied to those devices if not handled correctly.

As for LR ghost nodes, they are cosmetic only, they wont hurt anything. Staff is working on fixing the removal process for those nodes. They can be ignored for now.

Alright, thank you. I will take the recommendation and continue.

Many thanks to all for the USB stick ghost removal instructions pdf. Just removed 8 stubborn ghosts created when first setting up the hub. At the time, I didn't know to be looking for them. Will now see if the network becomes more responsive.

I used the Zooz ZST39-LR USB stick, instructions were clear and sufficiently detailed. The only hiccups I had were an hour long install time for the software (not the optimistic 8 minutes  ) and the z-wave devices showed up directly below the pc controller in the top left panel. The bottom left was properties and device classes.

Thanks again, most appreciated!
