Homekit integration: thermostat can’t be set to less than 10C

Hello, getting into the automation world and using my new Hubitat hub for the last few months.

I am reviving a thread that was closed and unsolved. I have the same issue as mboisson with a sinope zigbee thermostat paired to Hubitat C8 installed in my garage that can go to 5C as a heating setpoint. This works fine in Hubitat and manually on the thermostat. However in Homekit, I can't go below 10C. I can confirm other thermostats that are integrated directly to Homekit can go lower than that. My Ecobee thermostat that is wifi can be set to its minimum of 7C in Homekit.

I am thinking this a simple programming issue in the Homekit integration app of Hubitat where the minimum setpoint was determined at 10C (and 55C for the max) for thermostats. Since we can't see the programming of this app, I would like to know if someone in the community can confirm this and maybe look into changing this?

Thanks!

In the HomeKit integration app, scroll down to the thermostat section:

You can edit the temperature range but it’s blocked at minimum 10C. You cannot enter a value below 10C in the app.

I admit I only ever touched the max setting. You’re right, doesn’t seem to let one set it lower than 10. @gopher.ny

10 degrees C is 50 F. There is little need for a thermostat designed for home use to go below that level. In the wintertime, pipes can freeze if the home temperature is set to a lower value.

I can understand that if you have a specialized cold room for aging meat, you need a lower temperature. You might need a special thermostat to do that.

Even a wine cellar can be kept at 12 degrees C.

I agree majority of application will not go below this.
It’s just that this is for my garage that I don’t use very often and I specifically bought this thermostat knowing it could go to 5C so I can prevent freezing and adjust temperature when there is dynamic pricing for electricity. I don’t see why the HomeKit integration app should limit the minimum temperature.

Will adjust in the next build.

I wonder if 10 is a limit in HomeKit/Home app itself (I just assumed). I have my thermostats in my country house integrated to HomeKit with Homebridge, and the lowest setting with Homebridge is also 10 in the Home app. I keep my thermostats set at 6 (via Hubitat automations) when I’m in the city, and I just assume it’s set correctly if the temperature displays around 6. Will change them to the built-in integration if this update allows them to go lower.

Awesome! Thanks gopher. When can we expect the next build? I have no idea at what frequency the apps are updated.

Thanks again!

My wifi Ecobee thermostat can be set to 7C in HomeKit. I don’t think it’s HomeKit but the Hubitat integration app.

There's no estimated release date. However, 2.4.1.x is currently in beta testing. It seems more likely that this change will be added to 2.4.1 than to 2.4.0.x - although I could be mistaken.

You can request to join the beta testers group using the instructions in the post linked below:

The next major release is currently in the Beta phase. the change will be first released in the next beta build. If you'd like to get the change sooner, before the Beta Program concludes, you can sign up for the beta program [here], otherwise, the next public release will be available when the Beta phase concludes (there is no ETA for when that will happen).

I’m in beta, so I can try it out there and report back if you’re not inclined to try beta.

That would be great. I don’t plan on going beta tester in the short term.

Thanks

You're making the incorrect assumption that thermostats are only for home HVAC. Thermostats may also be used for refrigeration control, where temperatures below 0F may be required. Or one may want to set an oven thermostat to 350F.

FWIW, the lower limit has been changed to 5C/41F in the latest beta release of 2.4.1.x ....

Absolutely. I have a thermostat on my Traeger pellet grill that goes up to 500F. However, it is a specialized thermostat as is one designed for refrigeration control. It looked like this application was for a HVAC thermostat.

No, it looks like this thread is about thermostat integration between Hubitat and Homekit. Although this specific case involves an HVAC thermostat, the general case should accommodate any generic thermostat, which extends beyond HVAC. I don't use Homekit, but assume they're not so short sighted as to support only HVAC thermostats, so the integration should also support a wide range.

Confirmed this works in the beta release. Thanks, @gopher.ny! I will be switching my thermostats over to the built-in integration.

And for those who are wondering, creating a virtual "Outdoor Thermostat" and writing my outdoor temperature at home to it was the only way I could find to display the outdoor temperature in a HomeKit widget on the homepage of my iPad as shown below. (You can't select a temperature/temperature sensor as a device in a widget.)
