Cloud backup failure causes Z-Wave radio to go offline

I am having this problem too. I have been for some time. The only fix seems to be the gracefully shut down and unplug for a minute. I have been having it for some time. Until I read this thread I didn’t connect the cloud backup problem with the zwave mesh shutdown.

I have registered for beta. Now what?

Sending you a PM with how you can enable additional logging so you can help us narrow down the issue.

Cloud backup failure again last night and all my zwave stopped working. It gets worse. I have a "Home Activity Monitor" routine that will notify (SMS) my kids if there has been no movement in my home for 8+ hours even though people were at home. It fired at 7AM this morning. The kids were first concerned followed by not too impressed when they learned this was all caused because a backup failed. Not cool :rage:

I changed my daily cloud backup to weekly during the daytime hours. At least if it fails I'll likely catch it pretty quick.

Is there no way to receive a message when such backup fails? If not, there should be.

You can set a message to notify z-wave radio is off line... I use hub information to do it. Just swap zigbee for z-wave

If you could join the beta so you can enable additional logging, that would help us a lot to narrow down the problem and hopefully get this resolved ASAP.

All your motion detectors are Z-Wave?

zwaveCrashed is a location event. You don't need the Hub Info app.

I have a rule that, in the event of a z-wave crash, shuts down the hub and kicks off a rule in my spare C-7 hub to power cycle the main hub via a ZEN16 powering the main hub.

Plus, the main hub sends out Pushover and Ecolink chime siren notifications when z-wave crashes. That alone could be helpful.

No my motion sensors are Hue but my bathroom door contact is zwave. I know that door was opened/closed at least twice between 10PM and 6AM. When I setup my Home Activity Monitor I took into account one device may fail and trigger a false positive. I put a zwave contact sensor on the door and a hue sensor on top of the bathroom cabinet. Not only did zwave go down the damn hue has not been responding since the end of Aug. :rage:

As for using Location Event I noticed my log showed zwave crash at 7:32 AM today but I know it was down way before that time. I was up at 6:20 this morning trying to figure out why most of my lights would not come on when doors opened/switches were triggered.

That is correct. The best we can tell, in absence of any logs to confirm it, the crash report comes hours after the backup failed, which appears to take down Z-Wave. It could be the other way around (Z-Wave causing the backup to fail). That is why it's critical to get those additional logs from at least one hub. We've been fishing, but didn't catch anything yet.

It takes a couple hours I think before it registers.

I'm in. Joining now

This issue is killing me. Totally not cool to have a house running zwave thermostats in FL and have your zwave randomly drop out.

How do I join the beta to help you guys out?

I totally understand, that's why it has been a top priority to narrow down the problem and find a solution. I am happy to let you know that a fix was released in the beta update today. If you'd like, you can send me a private message with your hub id and I'll enroll the hub temporarily. You don't need to fully join the beta group for this, if you don't want to.

DM sent, thx!

Hey @bobbyD, I did a cloud backup of my C5 today (I did this via my VPN) as an insurance policy of sorts in case my C5 dies and I have to order a C8. When I arrived home this evening my zwave network was completely down and none of my devices were listed in zwave details. I powered down and everything came back when I powered up but thought you would like to know. I'll send a PM with the pertinent hub information.

Have you updated to 2.3.6?

Thanks for your feedback. The Z-Wave on the C5 is different than C7/C8 and not related to the issue on this thread. However, will check your hub's log shortly to see if there are any clues about what might have gone wrong.

Yes, I'm on 2.3.6 (latest). This is only the second time that I have used the cloud backup. The first time was about a month ago, no issues. This time on 2.3.6 the zwave crashed. I plan to try it again when I have some time to mess with it and my bride is not at home. She is pretty forgiving (I am very lucky. I married up) but when the water valve doesn't open and the lights fail to come on I can sense her frustration even though she says it's alright.

I see Bobby says that this is unrelated but they may have introduced a bug for the C5 while fixing the C7/C8 issue.

You close your water valve? Why? I mean the only time that should close is when there is a leak.

If a fitting in a wall or somewhere not near a sensor goes it could be a long while before it's discovered. We always close the water valve when we leave. I have considered closing the valve at night but I guess you have to draw the line somewhere. LOL. If the dishwasher is running the valve will stay open until it's complete. Our house water supply doesn't need to be on when no one is here so it's just cheap easy insurance. Especially, since most of the time, the valve operation is transparent and just happens in the background.

You could add a flow meter and just leave it on all the time. I mean for me personally I don't see a reason to turn it off when not in use unless we go away for a few days then it makes sense.
