Cloud backup failure causes Z-Wave radio to go offline

I agree, the cloud backup issue doesn’t affect Zigbee AFAIK.

I’d suggest raising a warranty claim with Hubitat.

I had another one this morning on .140.

Backup failure and Z-Wave went off-line?

PM your Hub's UID (Settings>Hub Details) to @bobbyD and someone from HE can take a look at your hub's engineering logs.

Same here on .140 today, May 2nd. This is getting old. I hate getting up and having Google telling me, "Sorry but I can't reach Hubitat" :rage:

I’ve minimised the issue by changing my cloud backups to weekly.

That is exactly what I did the AM. Also changed the time of backup to Noon. If it is gonna fail, I would sooner have the zwave go offline at that time. Very annoying when I first get up

I completely agree. I had two cloud backups fail months ago and switched mine to 3pm on Sundays. Oddly enough I never had a backup fail again. Maybe it’s because no one else is doing a cloud backup at that time.

Steve, we have all now changed our backup times to match 3:00 pm in Ontario on Sunday.

Hahaha - I was thinking that as I typed. Lol.
I’m going to have to apply a randomizer :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

 It's not timing out or anything like that. It's all about Z-Wave mesh health. Plus we have implemented lots of bug fixes to address the majority of the failures. Some failures are not possible to fix, as they relate to connected devices that bring down the mesh to its knees. Though we continue to investigate and more work to close some of these issues is underway in the next platform release.

Checked your hub and looks like you had 3 failures in the past 3 months, and 87 successes in the same period. While not ideal, it's been getting a lot better. We are still looking for solutions on those sporadic failures.

With your hub, is a little different. You've had 44 successful backups in the past few months, no backup failures, but 6 backups were interrupted and never finished. Is your hub on a UPS? It seems like you may have power interruptions.

Is there any information to help us (or you) identify/diagnose/bin the sporadic failures?

I've only ever had 2 of these failures that left Z-wave offline after a backup, and both happened in the last 30 days. The failure percentage is really low - no failures for the prior year! But both times it cost me valuable WAF ("I asked Alexa to turn on the lights, and it didn't work again").

2 in a month is higher than most I've seen, lately. Mind sending me your hub id so I can take a look?

Subscribed to backup program months ago without issue, but for past 2 days the Z-wave radio on C8 has crashed around 3AM when failed backups occur. Hub updates are manual. Kindly suggest how to resolve, as I have no idea how to begin troubleshooting.
Below is screenshot of log this morning, indicating backups were fine until recently. Please advise. Thanks! Bob

As this thread (and others) have said - it is a known issue and is being worked. There is no fix currently.

A few things you can do to make it "better" until a full fix is implemented:

  1. Consider changing the TIME the backups are done to a time that is less painful. A Lot of people do them during day hours so that in the rare case it breaks, it is quickly noticed and can be fixed - as opposed to waking up with "nothing working"

  2. Consider not doing backups every day, in favor of weekly or every 2 weeks. There is very little technical reason to do a cloud backup daily, and in fact it can help spreading them out so that you have a longer retention time of cloud backups (they auto-delete after 5 or 6 backups, so if done daily you can't go back very far in time).

I don't think the crash is directly related to the cloud backup. That issue has been resolved. The lingering issue with the backups is that sometimes the Z-Wave portion fails and is noted as a backup failure. I am however interested in learning more about your crash incident as that may be indicative of a bigger issue. I am sending you a private message to get more details about your hub.

Yup it is on a UPS. If there was a power interruption it would have affected other things in my home. In other words, I would have know because, unfortunately, none of my clocks are on UPS

That the backup is getting interupted is somewhat disturbing. Other than power interuption what could cause that???

Might want to try a different ac adapter...

And USB cable. These can fail internally.
