I'm replacing the large ceiling fan/light in our living room and would like it (finally) to be controlled via Hubitat.
So far, the only device I've come across is the Hampton Bay MR101Z controller. I used that years ago (on Wink!) and found it lacking.
How are you all automating ceiling fans with lights?
Be careful because a large majority of fans are now DC motors instead of AC motors. Because of that, traditional smart switches won't work to control them, or you will burn one or the other (fan or switch) if you do try to do so.
In what way exactly? I doubt you will find one of these a decade or so after they were out of production, but by telling us what you don't like it might help us to make recommendations.
I am using Leviton ZW4SF for fan speed and a ZW6HD for the light which dims. The wiring was for two circuits for the fan / light. The unit is a basic pull chain ceiling fan light. Hamilton Beach I think.
I use the below fans with a broadlink RM 4 pro added into Hubitat which works great and covers all fans in a two story house (7fans)
I just found this on AliExpress: AU$134.99 | 38/52 Inch Ceiling Fan Living Room Restaurant Americans Modern Office Without Light DC Remote control Electric Fan 110V 220V https://a.aliexpress.com/_mKOl8Hn
I use GE Zwave fan controllers. My fan light is on a separate switch, so that is wired to a Zwave dimmer.
I was able to use the Fan Controllers with the RF remote module still in the fan, by just leaving the fan set to High. The fan controller takes care of the lower speeds and off.
Our fans are the three speed pull chain type. Wiring to the wall switch for light and fan is separate. The Lutron Caseta fan controller works perfectly. Set fan to high with the chain. The Lutron Caseta control does the rest.
Same here. Leave the pull chain on high then control them from the ZW4SF to get 4 speeds. Make a rule so they come on or off with the room temperature. And a button controller Like a Zen37 to control the ZW4SF to make a remote control. Or Dashboard tiles so the Pixel can remote control them all from the internet. Fun stuff.
I used the Bond controller but had difficulty with the frequencies I needed three of my fans. You may want to consider this controller as an option for well.
I took a break for painting and flooring install and am back on figuring out the best way to get this ceiling fan on home automation.
The Inovelli smart switch is on back order and they are can not say when it will be available - might be several months
The fan has an AC motor - and a remote - no separate wall control for light/fan and no pull switches.
I'm sure the Inovelli pair would do the trick but are there other options since I would rather not wait months.
I have also been looking for better fan control methods and have come up with zilch. I prefer DC motors because they are so much quieter, but nothing seems capable of controlling them except their crappy little remotes. We've taken to using a basic on/off wall switch to turn the fan on and off (with tue fan set to off) which just cuts power to the entire device. When we want the fan, out comes the crappy remote. When we want the fan with the light off, out comes the crappy remote. Not maddening, but aggravating. And I can't figure out how to clone the remotes, which appear to be RF/digital rather than IR.
