Cartoons (& Memes & Weird Funny Stuff) of Hubitat

As an Election Judge here in the state of Illinois with "Traditional" ballots just because a candidate you chose loses doesn't mean the vote was wasted. I have been studying the options and ranked based systems are more about "preferences" than selecting a candidate you want for office.

They have also been subject to manipulation and have put candidates in winning positions because people don't know who they are ranking outside of their top 1 but have heard about #2 because the candidate spent a lot of $$$'s on media.

In Traditional ballots we are able to tabulate at the voting precinct and transmit results, where ranked-choice ballots must be centralized and can only proceed after all ballots are returned and adjudicated. Initially, only first-preference votes are counted. If a candidate has a majority, he or she wins (and the whole ranked-choice process becomes irrelevant). If not, then the least popular candidate is eliminated, ballots with that candidate first are “adjusted” to move up the second preference to be counted as a first preference, and there is a new round of counting. Any of those ballots that have no second preference are eliminated.

I am not trying to be political here but find it fascinating that the more complicated the voting method the less likely you will have control over who is elected. It's hard enough to understand 300 pages of election processes, and I also being a Polling Place Technician 600 pages of equipment configuration and process and 40 hours of training each election. Trying to explain rank to voters would make my head explode.

I see your point, however it gives voters the confidence to vote for independents first, and if that person is coming 3rd in the race for that seat, your second choice will get the vote.

The rankings are your choice, where the candidates appear on the ballot is randomised. I’ve even seen the sitting member for my seat listed second last on the ballot. The voter puts the Numbers alongside each candidate in the order of their choosing.

We don’t often get things right here, but one thing rarely argued about is the AEC, they are a 100% independent organisation who run the federal elections and draw the election boundaries based on strict rules. Gerrymandering is thankfully not a thing here.

Don't sell yourselves short. You're still nailing the whole 'animals that will kill you as soon as look at you' thing.

Carney has rung Trump and thanked him for his help in the election

Rank choice voting would be perfect if we could also rank who we DON'T want. Then we get the most-favored, least-offensive candidates and a majority of the voters are OK with that.

Problem solved!

IMHO, political HUMOR is ok in this thread (I enjoy a sharp sense of humor as much as the next guy, especially a dark sense of humor :joy:), but how many of you feel that more serious political discourse belongs in another thread (especially conspiracy theory crap etc)? For example (assuming this post and related posts will be hopefully moved to a more suitable lounge), as a person who votes both Republican as well as Democrat depending upon the candidate and issue, what specific Democrat actually secretly ran as a Republican and is this widespread? Curious minds want to know. Also, how many people here sincerely believe that the California fires were intentionally started by space lasers? Let’s keep this thread for “Memes & Weird Funny Stuff”. JMHO.

My sister bought a brand new Opel Kadett and had a 4 track player installed. This was before 8 tracks. The mechanism was open and probably susceptible to dirt intrusion.

My other sister had a brand new MG Midget. They let me drive them, not aware of the abuse they got. The Opel was faster than the MG but not by much. I was really beating the Opel one night and it started running like crap. Barely made it home. Parked it in front of the house and went to bed. Sister got up in the morning and took it to school, came home and nothing was said. I went out and started it up and it was fine.
Still to this day, as a retired auto mechanic, I have no idea what broke and then fixed itself. I drove the car many times since with no issues.

Second that. The only thing I’d like to hear about even less than election conspiracies is vaccine conspiracies.

Thinking about installing one of these. That way the wife won't spend 15 minutes before leaving looking for her phone:

If she's looking for it before she leaves, then don't you really need to install one of these?

How would that have even worked wirelessly....

:joy: reminds me of when my college roommate and I would drive around in his old beater decades before cell phones (yes, I am old :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:). He had a handset to an old princess phone installed in the center console. When he would be stuck in traffic or at a stop light adjacent to another car (especially one with a pretty girl), he would have the window rolled down and loudly speak into the handset to freak people out (back then only the super wealthy/famous had the radio based telephone comms in their limos or cars). Always got some curious looks and it was always good for a few laughs especially since his car was such a beater and we were just young college kids!

Just took a screen shot of something I saw in my news feed:

Not being political but as a dentist who is retired from practice (I still teach and am an attending for students and residents at a major university medical center though) I can’t take advantage of this but I can tell you that my students/residents are already shopping for accessories for their new Bentleys they are planning to be able to purchase :joy:.
