I have a C8-Pro that currently controls 56 Z-Wave (mains powered) switches and plug-in modules in my house. 36 of them are wall switches/dimmers, and most of those are Zooz 800 devices. (I have a few Enbrighten 700 Fan controllers.) All devices appear to be working fine, and the hub has no problem controlling any of them.
As the title of this post suggests, I seem to have a ghost device that I'm unable to remove. The ghost device appears only on the Z-Wave Device Settings page, nowhere else. It has no label (name), and three buttons appear next to it: "Refresh", "Repair", and "Discover". There is no "Remove" button. The status column displays a green checkmark, as if everything is okay.
I've tried clicking Refresh multiple times, but the Remove button never appears. Clicking Repair appears to go through some sort of process, but then completes quickly with no apparent change. Pressing Discover does absolutely nothing ... no prompts or messages. I've tried shutting down the hub, waiting 5 minutes and then restarting it (and then trying to click Refresh again, but the Remove button never appears.
I can't say exactly when that ghost device appeared ... I just noticed it today. Unfortunately, I've added (or replaced) a number of devices over the past few weeks. There were numerous times that I had to try a few times to get some devices included, but eventually they all succeed (and I honestly can't recall which specific devices those were). Basically, I have no way of associating this ghost device with any one particular attempt to include a new device. As I mentioned before, every switch that I've added to the system is properly accounted-for, and working fine.
Does anyone have any thoughts on what I might try next to remove this ghost device?
I have a C8 Pro that recently had a ghost device I could not remove. I have a Z-stick but before I broke it out I switched to Zwave(JS), because it is a bit of a pain to go through the Z-stick process. I have had to do it a few times.
I heard that the JS handles it a bit better. My system will not work on the JS but you can switch back and forth. Switching to JS allowed me to remove it. It took a couple tries of refreshing and removing but it did remove it. I then switched back to legacy and all was well.
Hi, All but one of my devices have been joined as Mesh devices. (I tried joining one as LR, which worked fine. However, my house is not very big and the hub is able to communicate with every one of my mesh-joined devices directly, with no hops. So, I didn't see the point in joining them as LR.) As far as the hub, it is alkready in ZWave JS mode.
The reason I use LR mode w/my LR devices is that it isolates them from Z-Wave mesh network dependencies, not only for their own connections but also for other devices trying to connect through them. I like the reduction of dependencies between devices.
Well, I've read the PDF on using a Z-Wave USB stick to remove ghost devices. I'm still new to Hubitat, and haven't had much experience dealing with some of the more advanced features and operations ... so admittedly, those instructions are somewhat intimidating for me.
However, I've just ordered a Zooz 800 USB stick. (Will that work or did I order the wrong thing?) I've also created a Silicon Labs account and have downloaded the software. (Obviously, there's nothing I can do until the new stick arrives.)
Meanwhile, if anyone has any other suggestions, just let me know. Otherwise, I may need some more advice once I'm able to actually try the removal via USB stick.
The USB stick you got should be fine. If you're already on ZWaveJS and the Remove option didn't work, then the Z-stick may be your only option to remove the ghost.
One thing to note - if you aren't having problems (basically devices respond normally/as expected) then the ghost might not be a problem...
I'm no expert on this, but you say you added new devices recently and one/some you had to add several times. This sounds like the culprit. If you can exclude these new devices or simply power them down, you may get the remove button on the suspect device.
Well, I received the stick and have followed the instructions (at least I think I have ) The Silicon Labs Simplicity Software is installed, and it's connected (via serial USB) to the Zooz 800 USB stick. I've also installed the Z-Wave PC controller, and that seems to be working. I can put the stick into inclusion mode, as well as the C8-Pro ... and that's where my luck ends. The hub is never able to complete an inclusion. (I've tried numerous times using both NWI and Classic modes. I've even tried resetting the stick.)
Interestingly, after a failed inclusion attempt, I can then start an Exclusion, and both the HE and the Zooz Stick seem to detect each other immediately (and the exclusion process stops quickly). But here's the stranger part. If I reboot the HE and then open up the Z-Wave Details settings page, I can now see an "Unknown" entry for each failed inclusion attempt ... all labeled as "Pending". Fortunately, I can "Remove" those entries and then try another inclusion, but the same thing happens the next time.
Just an update ... I think I'm going to have to put this to rest for a while. I'm still unable to pair the Zooz 800 USB stick with the C8-Pro. I've tried power cycling the hub, resetting the stick, and even moving the stick and the hub closer, within about two feet from one another. Exclusions seem to work perfectly ... inclusions fail 100% of the time. (My log file is full of "Excluded unknown device" and "Inclusion Failed". (Of course, I've manually removed the pending inclusions each time.)
Fortunately, that ghost device doesn't seem to be causing any problems. (It still bugs me though to have it there. ) I've read that there have been a number of reports of folks who have been unable to pair their USB stick to the hub, but I don't know if that's a Zooz problem, a Silicon Labs problem, a Hubitat problem, or a "me" problem ... (or a combination of them all).
Regardless, I appreciate all of the advice and help I've received from this community. Thanks.
