Beta Testers Needed - Pixora Locator - A better way to track locations

Introducing Pixora Locator

Pixora Locator is location sharing without the surveillance—built for people who want to stay connected, coordinate plans, and know the people they care about are safe without surrendering their privacy. Share precisely, approximately, temporarily, or only when it matters; create Places, plan Trips, form temporary groups, receive meaningful arrival and safety alerts, and decide exactly who sees what and for how long. There are no driving scores, no judgment, no permanent record of everywhere you’ve been, and no expectation that anyone should watch a moving dot all day. Whether you’re checking that someone arrived safely, meeting friends at a concert, taking a family road trip, or asking for help, Locator gives you the reassurance you need—and gives everyone else the freedom they deserve.

Pixora Locator: private by choice, connected when it counts.

We have finished the Google Play internal testing phase and are now moving on to the Closed Testing phase.

I’m looking for at least 12 Android users to test Pixora Locator before its public Google Play release. Testing lasts a minimum of 14 continuous days and involves installing the private test version, trying its location-sharing and safety features, and reporting any problems or confusing behavior.

Hubitat Requirements:

  • Maker API
  • Our custom driver (will be available through HPM)

Once the Android app is officially launched in the Google Play store, we'll start the testing phase of the Apple version!

Explore more of what this app can do at Pixora Locator — Private Family Location Sharing Beta .

  1. Follow these steps on your Android phone.
  2. Visit groups.google.com/g/pixorahq.
  3. Press Join group.
  4. Visit play.google.com/apps/testing/com.pixorahq.family.
  5. Press Become a tester.
  6. Follow the Google Play link and install Locator.*
    • If the Play store says 'File not Found', click the link from a computer first and send it to your phone. Thanks
  • Remain opted in for at least 14 consecutive days.

  • Beta open to USA/Canada only. Others can thank the EU restrictions/requirements for this not being available!

  • Final pricing, after beta, isn't set in stone but looking at $4.99/month and $49.99/year.

  • Integrates natively with Hubitat (free driver)

  • The first 5 testers from this community, will get free LIFETIME access!

Does it support anything other than Hubtiat? Home Assistant?

What about after? No point in testing if I wouldn't pay for it after... But to determine that one would need to know the amount/structure.

Yes.

Pixora indicates that their core apps will remain free, but I don’t know if Locator is one of their core apps.

Doh, I didn't even notice the website link. I should have read that 1st.

EDIT: Ah, found it...

"Locator will use a separate yearly subscription"

"A yearly subscription is planned for Locator only"

:man_shrugging:

Which is fine, I have no issue with paying for things I use. But I'll wait until they publish how much it is, and how it is licensed, before spending my time testing it.

Yes, it supports Hubitat and HA

Both the driver for Hubitat and the app for HA are already available, just waiting on Google to approve the beta app.

The play store app will require a subscription. Not set in stone yet but looking at $4.99/month or $49.99/year. That's half the price of the lowest paid tier for Life360, with no other upgrade needed.

The free driver is already listed in HPM.

Sure there is, how about helping out a looooooong time Hubitat user!?

The only thing that has a cost will be the Locator app for your phone. No other apps/integrations have any cost.

Thanks! $50/yr per person, or $50/yr per family? Other?

$50/yr/person would be steep. $50/yr/family wouldn't bother me. In fact I've reached out to Life360 multiple times telling them I would gladly pay about that much for their service IF it included published/supported home automation integration....

Anyway, I have some time so I'll go sign up. Thanks.

Don't know yet, for Android there is the Family option that it will use if eligible. I have no idea how Apple handles thing like that. First time going through the whole process, learning a lot as I go.

Makes sense. I know little to nothing about the app store space and rules.

I doubt you would get many takers at $50/yr/person, but what do I know! People will pay $8 for a coffee (not me, but other people) so maybe they would do $50/yr/person.

Life360 starts at $9.99/month and limits the user to only 5 saved places.

My app right now limits 50 places to start. I'll up that as we make sure this all works and how the server handles the volume. PLUS, send to Hubitat and HA built in.

Everyone in my family, and 4 of my extended families, use Life360 and NONE of them use the paid version. :man_shrugging: So sure, they WOULD LIKE TO CHARGE that but how many takers do they have?

Anyway, not my fight to fight. I do wish you luck!

EDIT: Shows what I know, they have more than I would have thought... https://investors.life360.com/news-releases/news-release-details/life360-reports-record-q2-2026-results

I can answer that one now, YES. But it's not your Google/Apple family, it's the household members you have in your Pixora Planner setup.

From Google - "Since this is an in-app subscription, not a purchased app, it's not eligible for the Google Family account.".

Oh and that link has some crazy numbers in it! And don't forget they made millions selling user data!

$50/yr/family seems reasonable to me - FWIW. If reliable and gave me more control than life360, while still being able to see where the heck my family is, I would likely pay it.

I'd love to help beta test, but I live in the Bahamas (whatever the EU restrictions are, they shouldn't apply).

Sorry, most countries ( including the Bahamas ) need to have in country representative. ie. Lawers.

How would the use of Pixora Locator differ from the functionality in Owntracks?

I am currently using Owntracks, with its Android apps for family members and the track recorder and web map service running on my local NAS. It was a little tricky to set up but it's been quite reliable and free.

I haven't used/looked at Owntracks in years. So i wouldn't be able to give you any comparison to it. Take a look at Pixora Locator — Private Family Location Sharing Beta to see what it is all about.

Thanks

Since this has received basically no support from this community, I'm very curious as to why. I've put a lot of time, energy and money into this project and would value your opinion as part of the poll or a separate post below. Remember you can always do it anonymously. Thanks.

What made you NOT try Locator?
  • No interest at all
  • Don't trust the author
  • Don't have an Android but would like to try an Apple version
  • Too expensive after beta
  • Would prefer an ad based free version
  • I use Owntracks and it fits my needs
  • I use Life360 and love that they sell my data to 3rd parties!

I'm using Owntracks and find this suits my needs.
Good luck with your project.

I like your project but my existing methods of geofencing have worked without a glitch over the last four years. So I’m hesitant to start something new.

I emailed the admin/link to participate and never heard anything back. :man_shrugging:
